Couple accused of torturing children Allegedly pulled out kids' toenails, beat them with hammers

Friday, February 4, 2005 Posted: 5:27 AM EST (1027 GMT)

(CNN) -- A manhunt has been launched in Florida for a couple accused of torturing five of seven children in their home, including pulling out their toenails with pliers and keeping them so malnourished that they "looked like pictures from Auschwitz," authorities said Thursday.

Citrus County Sheriff's spokeswoman Gail Tierney said an arrest warrant was issued for John Dollar, 58, and his wife, Linda, 51 -- each of whom face one count of "aggravated child abuse/torture" for all five children.

The Dollars were the legal guardians of all seven children, although they were not their biological parents, Tierney said. She said the other two children were said to be "favorites" of the Dollars, and were spared their alleged abuse.

The case came to authorities' attention two weeks ago, when a 16-year-old was transported from the family home in Beverly Hills, Florida, to a local hospital. The boy was bleeding from a laceration on his head and there were red marks on his neck. He weighed just 59 pounds, Tierney said.

"That was just the start of the alarming parts of this case," she told CNN in a telephone interview.

Where I work we're required to do background checks on all new employees. The state is so screwed up that we had a guy who had been convicted of child abuse working here for more than four months before we found out. And how we found out was because he told a co-worker, not because the state notified us. Waste of time, IMO.

I have a friend who once proposed that we should all be allowed 5 SCUD missiles in our lifetime that we can launch at any given moment at totally disgusting people. You have to use your SCUDS wisely and you're only allowed 5. If you use them against the wrong person, then the other 4 will explode in your face immediately. Sometimes not a totally bad idea!

"Authorities believe they (Linda and John Dollar)may be traveling in a 1996 black-and-gold Provost Marathon motor home with Florida tag number U06YAC. The couple may also be towing a 2000 gold-colored, 4-door Lexus with Florida tag number DH41D."

Authorities say anyone who sees the vehicle or vehicles should call 352-726-1121.

How long have these poor children been kept by these monsters? They were old enough to try to protect themselves, if they were not disabled, or damaged and brainwashed since they were little.

I wonder if there is coming back from such abuse and deprivation. Were they unofficially given into the care of the Dollars, or officially adopted or fostered?

I hope and pray these children can come back.

Lot's of people are accused of child abuse with the flimsiest amount of evidence which turns out to be false or overstated.

It's a little difficult to overstate the problems with having a 16 year old boy weighing only 59 pounds

Uh oh. The articles mentions the kids were home-schooled. The DUers can't pass up an opportunity to demonize non-government schooling. And look the neighbor says he is a Christian. Hillary will assure us they must be right-wing Republicans. This is Bush's fault.

Just an innoculation here.

For this one case of abuse, i could probably find a thousand cases of abuse by public school teachers and students.

The most likely senerio is that they simply were State Assistance pigs who used these kids to collect cash from the State. 1 body = $$$

What is wrong with you?

Nothing the Constitution can't fix.

There is a legal premise in this country called innocent until proved guilty or you just prefer vigilantism justice?

Trial by jury or judge, then string them up. If found guilty.

"The children were home-schooled, so their contact with the outside world was very limited."

Right. Never miss a chance to suggest this is what happens when people homeschool.

This sentence does not belong in the report. This "family" is not representative of the home school movement.

Shame on the AP and whoever wrote this article for exploiting this tragic situation to take a pot shot at home schoolers.

I would certainly agree.

My entire point in waiting until all the evidence is in: is there are lots of cases were information by authorities was given to the media was flat out wrong, misleading or confused by someone.

Olympics 2000 bombing is a perfect example

Believe me, if all this is true, I'll be first in line to push the plunger of drugs into their foul bodies to remove them from the living.

Uh oh. The articles mentions the kids were home-schooled.

Simply keeping your children out of school DOES NOT mean you are homeschooling. Homeschooling is an active, not passive endeavor. I highly doubt these monsters spent a single second enriching the minds of their children.

Message to the torturers: You can't outrun God in your gold Lexus. He gets the last word, and I don't think you'll like it.
