Animal Rights Activist Sells Her Skin for Charity

Looking for a unique way to support the fight against animal abuse?

The British founder of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the world's biggest animal rights group, is auctioning off a lizard tattoo on her right arm -- with proceeds going to the charity.

Billed as "waterproof and weathered" and "suitable for making into a wallet or watch strap," the tattoo is being offered on Web site eBay to draw attention to the plight suffered by skinned animals.

"It's the only skin you can wear and use with the express permission of the original owner," said Ingrid Newkirk of her tattoo.

"Euphemisms like 'leather' and 'meat' help mask the cruelty that goes into stealing and slaughtering for clothing, trinkets and taste ... It may be uncomfortable to contemplate, but we're all flesh and blood," she said Tuesday.

The purchase price will be donated to PETA's "Shed Your Skin" Campaign, which promotes alternatives to leather and exotic animal skins.

But the winning bidder might have a long wait getting hold of the tattoo: it will only be delivered after its owner has passed away.

Hmm... they are plagiarists. In late 80s, in Pittsburgh during the winter I was accosted by one PETA type on account of my fur hat, and used the answer "the hat is made from animal rights protesters" to plug her noise. Now that same idea is played out again.

Do you mean that a PETA publicity stunt that has no basis in reality was reported as a genuine news story?

~say it ain't so~

Seriously I am sure this can't happen. I remember reading (but can't find the URL right now) about a Japanese Tattoo museum getting in trouble for buying a human skin.

You asked for it.

A guy in love with his girlfriend has her name tatooed on his penis. When he has a h***on the tattoo spells Wendy put when he has a soft on only the letters W-Y are visible.

On day he goes into a public washroom and stands at the urinal. There's a Jamaican guy next to him and he notices the guy has W-Y tattooed on his penis.

So he says to the guy, "Hey man your girlfriend's name must be Wendy."

The Jamaican looks at him and asks, "What do you mean Mon?"

So the guy says, "Your tatoo spells Wendy right? That's your girlfriend's name."

The Jamaican laughs and says "No Mon. My tatoo say, WELCOME TO JAMAICA AND HAVE A HAPPY DAY."

I'm heavily tattooed, and I have many friends and customers who are tattoo artists. I know many tattoo artists from around the world, including Japan. Let me share with you an interesting story a Japanese tattooer friend told me about the "old days".

A heavily tattooed person, usually with a full body-suit, could sell their skin to a wealthy art collector for money now, with the promise that your skin would hang on their wall after you were dead.

Obviously, after shelling out the money now on the promise of your skin later, you literally had a price on your head (well, in this case, skin...) So if you did sell your skin, you had to be a real badass, knowing that everywhere you went, any time, any place, there was someone who had been sent to kill you so that the collector could enjoy his purchase.

Kind of sick, and I'm not sure it happens too much these days, but probably every once in awhile. I have met a few people who said they would like for their tattoos to hang in a museum some day.

Not me, however. My tattoos will be buried with me unless I get in some kind of horrible fire, or motorcycle accident between now and then!

Dang! That sounds like a great story line for a movie with The Rock, or JCVD, or or...

I was about to say Steven Segal, but I don't know if he can run very fast anymore.

There was that Steven Segal movie where he was helping out some Eskimos in Alaska... he couldn't run then, and that was years ago!

hahahaha

But yeah, it is a great story. My Japanese friends are really nice guys. Tattooers in general are very strange people, but these Japanese guys seem to be even more strange than the rest. They've told me some really really interesting stories!

What a scam. If she wants to prove some point she should have her arm skinned and be a martyr to the cause. What a fraud.

I want it

You'll have to outbid me for it.

I want to make it into a chew toy for my dog. But do you think the ink might make him sick?

Cool! Too bad we have to wait before we can claim it!

I wonder if it would make better fish bait than pork rind?
