ITHACA NY--Wal-Marts have been popping up all across the country for years. But this store just didn't pop into Ithaca.

"It's been 10 years. They tried 10 years ago and the community didn't want it here, didn't want it here and so eventually now here we are," said Theresa Troy, Merchandise Supervisor for Wal-Mart.

Some members of the community say it is about time the store got here. The new Wal-Mart store is providing 267 new jobs to the area. New jobs that the company says are competitive with wages and benefits. Not only is Wal-Mart bringing in new jobs and sales tax revenue, the company also made $32,000 in local donations.

However, not everyone is excited with Wal-Mart's opening. The Tompkins County Living Wage Coalition is concerned with Wal-Mart's track record and wages and benefits of its employees. They feel the company can do better. And while they are excepting the company for now, they're still keeping their eyes open.

"They know we are here and we are not going anywhere. The first person that comes to us with a complaint about they are not being treated fairly at Wal-Mart and we will be all over them basically," said Sunshine Bannister, Tompkins County Living Wage Coalition.

By the way, I'd guess that this Sunshine is a second-generation hippy whose parents thought the name was groovy.

I suspect the real reason they're pissed off is Wal Mart won't accept Ithaca Dollars!

the company also made $32,000 in local donations.

Let's hope those donations are going to the Boy Scouts, The local senior center, and local hospitals INSTEAD of left wing PC groups like "living wage" groups etc.

That pic is funny. Noone really looks like that in Ithaca.

Yea, I can't see the four women in that picture hanging out topless with the Police Chief on Thursdays at Stewart Park :)!

Sunshine Bannister should be careful. Walmart might decide to buy Tompkins County

PPPS: I had another college friend whose last name was Honey, and he married a girl whose first name was Honey. Yup, she became Honey Honey.

She should hook up with Sugar Sugar and start a band.

PPPPS: And as we all know, if Shirley Temple Black married Tyrone Power, she'd be Shirley Temple Black Power. But that's a discussion for another day.

PPPPPS: And if Ida Lipino married Don Ho, she'd be Ido Ho.

My mother had a "snobbish" friend from England who would complain about Wal-Mart. She claimed to like "nicer" things and looked down her nose at the store and its shoppers.

One day mother ran into her friend in Wal-Mart and chided her. Embarassed, the friend only said, "I love coming here to look at the people!" (UGH!)

The two of them are no longer friends. Having a nasty attitude does not make a good friendship.

" They feel the company can do better. "

I'd like to be there when one of these geniuses goes into his local bank for a loan to buy a house or car and is told by the banker looking at his debt/income ratio "We FEEL you can do better".

Personally I'm looking forward to the first of February when my Costco membership expires, just so that when they ask me to renew I can explain how I "FEEL" about their political contributions.

Oh we really need to tag these "Living Wages" persons someway, wither RFID, ear tag, radio necklace... If of of the tagged walks into the WalMart Alarms sound and the media is called... Tagged is detained and interviewed by the media "Why were you caught inside the evil establishment of Walmart"??? Could be fun...
