Proposition 200, the Arizona initiative that was passed last fall and aimed at making sure some social services were not given to illegal immigrants, seems to be having an impact on a national level.
Not only is it mentioned on television programs such as Lou Dobbs' evening show on CNN, but it has spurred a group in Arkansas to seek a similar initiative.
The group is called Protect Arkansas Now, to mimic the group that pushed Prop. 200 in Arizona- Protect Arizona Now.
Like the one in Arizona, PAN hopes to "shrink the magnet" that can draw illegal immigrants to Arkansas.
"There's no doubt in anyone's mind that easy access and fraudulent access to welfare benefits is a large magnet that draws illegals into our state, said Arkansas state Sen. Jim Holt.
The measure being proposed in Arkansas, according to The Associated Press, would:
Require someone seeking to registered as a voter to prove U.S. citizenship, which is similar to the Arizona initiative
Strengthen identification requirements for voter registration by mail
Require someone applying for welfare benefits to prove eligibility, including legal residency in the state, as required by the Arizona initiative
And penalize government employees who don't report people they suspect are in the United States illegally, just as required by the Arizona initiative.
The chairman of Protect Arkansas Now, Joe McCutchen, denied this was a bigoted proposal. Instead, he voiced anger that President Bush hasn't worked to secure our borders.
The frustration in Arkansas is good to see. The border is an important issue nationwide, and we're glad people in Arkansas understand that - even if they don't share the border with Mexico. And the organizers of Protect Arizona Now announcing that they're forming a national group to push such issues.
But we're for a different solution to the problem and don't believe it's the state's place to deal with the immigration issue. Instead, the federal government should be the one to make the reform.
President Bush should take note of this growing discontent for his lack of action on border issues and hear the growing frustration nationwide. It's time to act on reform on the federal level. It's time to get serious about this issue, not just the scattered efforts in Arizona and Arkansas.
I'm tired of the compassion fetish. I'm one of the people getting shot at.
You are 100% correct. Once the other States follow AZ's example, the idiots in Washington will have no choice but to do the same.
Amen.
The fight continues. They will do everything to take this away from us.
whoops, sorry MI...didn't mean to leave you out of my ping on my previous post ;)
So the basic BS from mexico and the US based hispandering seditionists is that they are angered and heading for the international courts because I won't pay the illegal alien rent , medical and education costs ?
Gheeesh I hope these mohows don't want cable too.....phucm !
:::sigh:::
I'm tired of it too... because people like you are being shot at!! So... I am staying up late (& have to get up early) trying to figure out what in the sam hill I can do to help! Hang in there, and keep up the good work. Your voice is being heard! (*Compassion to American citizen bump!)
bttt
I work at a one of the largest printing corporations in the world. We have many illegals where I work. The HR guy says they can't legally ask if someone is here legally. All they can ask if if they can legally work. Then, they send the SS or Taxpayer id # to the IRS. If the numbers and the name match, no problem.
He said that the IRS doesn't care if it's getting income from the same number from different parts of the country. They just don't care.
We are governed by lunatics who have confused their vanity with godliness.
No problem, just don't let it happen again.
:)
Most Illegals employment is centered in relatively small, isolated businesses (i.e., GM is probably not an employer of Illegals nor is IBM, Pfizer or most of the Fortune 500 Companies
It is the hospitality, food, retail and building industries
that are using the illegals. You cannot get a fast food order in Tucson accurately because all the workers are Spanish speakers.
Fix Mexico's Economy. Take on Fox. We can then trade on an equal basis.
Right, but what I mean is that if the state were to suddenly crack down on things like that, he might decide to move to a state that will let him hire illegals because business would be too expensive otherwise.
Here is a view of the border from a freeper who recently went and looked for himself:
I spent today at the border, 70 miles east of San Diego. There's a private ranch with one mile of border frontage which is being trampled by aliens (the same as the other 2000 miles of Mexican border.) I was there for the AM Border Patrol change of shift, when many of the illegals cross. During that well-known hour, there is ZERO coverage along the border.
Three of us volunteers captured 40 (FORTY) of them in the past day (Jan 21 to 22, 2005) on this one mile wide property. The volunteers only come once in a while to help the rancher. The rest of the time, his ranch is a wide open path into the USA, not much different from any other mile of border. If they make it 1-2 miles inland, there are lots of houses/shacks/trailers which are "pick up sites." There are only a few Border Patrolmen to cover each 20 mile sector of the actual border, which is only a token effort, just minor window dressing, to show the sheeple that "Uncle Sam is on the job." They basically don't catch anybody, maybe 2% of the crossers by actual truthful and frank (not official PR) Border Patrolmen's estimates. Anyone they catch in this sector is by pure blind luck, or they are the ones which private citizens stop, hold and call in, and they pick up and count as captures. This 2% true catch rate is meaningless, since the illegals just get taken to the border, and cross again tomorrow or the day after, with a fresh 98% chance of success. Pretty pitiful, huh?
One of the 7 we got this morning was a 14 year old girl who speaks perfect English. I asked her where she learned to speak it so well, and she named the public middle school in LA where she has gone for the last 6 years. Your California taxes at work. She was visiting her granny in Mexico for Christmas, and was just coming "home" to LA. She'll make it back across tomorrow. I said you can write a paper for school: "What I did on my Christmas vacation." The seven were only wearing sneakers and jeans and light jackets and t-shirts, with about one liter of water each, carried by hand. They were not preparing for some long march into the interior, but just a 1-2 mile hike to a pre-arranged pickup.
I was able to chat with them in Spanish for the hour or so until the BP picked them up. They said that they did not have to pay until they were delivered in LA. Relatives in LA have the money. The cost is now down to only $500 a head, from $1500 a few years ago. Going to a "pay on delivery only" system also shows that the "market" for border crossing is looser than ever. Formerly, illegals had to pay coyotes up front, and lost their money if caught. Now, they don't pay until and unless they make it. This shows that the "coyotes" must lower their prices and give better terms to attract business from their many customers. The "market" at work! It's a great time to be an illegal alien! Prices are down, pay on delivery in LA is standard, results are guaranteed! If not today (2% chance of capture) then tomorrow, (98% chance of success).

This one is a bit different. Interesting.

"Governor Huckabee has criticized immigration legislation in the Arkansas Legislature, describing the bill as "inflammatory...race-baiting and demagoguery,'' and challenges the Christian values of its main sponsor.
The bill seeks to forbid public assistance and voting rights to illegal immigrants. Huckabee says it "enflames those who are racist and bigots and makes them think there's a real problem'' when there is not. The bill was filed by Republican Senators Jim Holt of Springdale and Denny Altes of Fort Smith, whose northwest Arkansas region includes the state's fastest growing Hispanic population.
Huckabee, also a Republican and a Baptist minister, said Arkansans should welcome hardworking immigrants of all races. He singled out Holt, who often talks of his strong Christian beliefs. The governor said "I drink a different kind of Jesus juice. My faith says don't make false accusations against somebody. In the Bible, it's called don't bear false witness.''
Huckabee said Holt's plan to deny prenatal care for illegal immigrants goes against their shared anti-abortion principles.
In response, Holt said he was hurt by the governor questioning his faith. Holt said he is not prejudice "except against those with prejudice.'' He said his legislation is an attempt to uphold the law and protect the benefits that apply to citizens. »
