I WAS UNABLE TO GET THE THUMBNAIL CODING TO WORK SO I USED LINKS FOR THE PHOTOS - SORRY!
Michael Medved has been touring the country promoting his new autobiographical book, Right Turns: Unconventional Lessons from a Controversial Life. Yesterday (January 25, 2005), he held a book signing, coupled with a live radio broadcast of his nationally syndicated show. The event was held outside and in front of the Barnes and Noble bookstore, which is located across the street from the Main Place shopping mall in Orange, California.
The show was broadcast from noon to 3:00 PST. I got there a few minutes early and noticed that there were very few folks there at that time. That's not surprising, since most of Michael's fans tend to have jobs (in my case, I'm semi-retired). The crew from the local Los Angeles area radio station, KRLA-AM 870, was still setting up. I suddenly remembered that I had a digital camera in my pocket. Since my retirement, I've taken to carrying it with me and I tend to forget that I have it. Well, I went to the KRLA events director and obtained permission from her to take pictures.
A few minutes before the show, Michael began signing books. The show soon started. During the early part of the show, he wore a ball cap because of the glare, but he soon discarded it.
Very shortly after the show started, Michael was interrupted by a disruptor. The disruptor was a Michael Moore look-alike who identified himself as "Russ." He was wearing a red Angels ball cap and a sweatshirt with "NEWT DUMB, RUSH DUMBER" emblazoned on it. He had taped a "B" over the "R" in "RUSH" so that it now read "BUSH."
Russ was also carrying a small sign which stated that Michael was a "POS." Michael was, of course, unflappable. He is an animated and engaging host and a delight to watch and listen to in person. He can handle and debate callers and guests as few of his contemporaries can. When Russ told Michael that "POS" stood for "piece of s**t," Michael told him that he would put him on the air - if he could control his language. Russ initially claimed that he had no desire to go on the air. He only wanted to remain there during the entire show to give Michael a bad time. Needless to say, Russ soon "acquiesced" and the crew equipped him with a microphone and headphones.
Russ then launched into his agenda which turned out to be nothing more than a collection of leftist clichés: Green Party voter, anti-Israel, Michael Medved is a self-hating Jew, Michael Moore is God, we should have energy saving vehicles yada, yada, yada. When Michael asked Russ what his profession was, Russ said that he bet on sports.
Russ then said that he had called the show before and was told never to call again. Neither Michael nor his producer could remember this. Michael offered to put Russ on with the program director after the break. Russ then declared that he had had enough. He had no intention of spending his afternoon on the radio. He stalked off to the parking lot. Moments later, this advocate of energy saving vehicles was observed leaving the parking lot in a large older model Cadillac. During his entire half hour plus stay, he had been angry, unpleasant, and toward Michael, disrespectful.
After Russ's departure, Michael began taking regular calls. Michael is a very outgoing, friendly person. During the early breaks in the show, instead of keeping to himself, he would actually get up from his chair and walk up close to the audience and discuss with us what the previous caller had been talking about.
Later, when more book buyers began arriving, he spent his breaks signing books.
This was the first time that I had ever attended a live show. It was interesting to see him do his transitions and cut promos he is remarkably smooth and professional. To top it off, his entire show was interesting, one of his better shows. He also discussed Ted Turner's statement comparing Fox News with Hitler, the Oscar nominations, and other topics. I had a great time and even had my picture taken with Michael.
Michael Medved ping
Michael Medved is one of my true favorites and a top notch debater.
I caught this show today, and even caught the part with that looney guy, with the t-shirt LOL
He was a jerk but Michael nevr once lost his composure with the guy.
I was listening yesterday when this Russ/nutcake was on. I sometimes wonder if these people are completely sane! I was a little afraid for Mr. Medved...no telling what some of these creeps might try.
Michael Medved is my favorite radio talk host; he's head and shoulders above all the others...even Rush Limbaugh. Medved must have an IQ of about 190....one intelligent guy!
Michael is amazingly articulate and bright. Yes, I too was concerned for Michael, although if this guy had tried to do anything the crowd would probably have jumped him. I was so glad when he left. I thought he was going to ruin the whole show.
i like his show lots.
unfortunately, the primitive place i now live has not his show on the air.
If you click on the KRLA link you can get his show live on the net. :)

Medved ping.
Thanks for the post! I love Michael Medved too.
He is a very nice man in person. Truly nice and sincere. :)
Michael Medved is one of the finest minds on radio. He never gets his feathers ruffled, especially with some of the idiots that call him. Mr. Lucky2 won his book last week as a call in to Michel's show. I can't wait to read it!
Wow. I probably heard his call too! :)
Michael is a sweet man and an independent thinker. America is lucky to have him.
I LOVE MICHAEL MEDVED. He is a treasure here locally. There isn't a more brilliant man on the radio, imo.
I also dig his new hair! Lookin' good!
We met Michael at the Republican convention, 2 summers ago, here in the Seattle area. He never rides in a car on Saturdays because of his faith but did that Saturday. He's a very nice man, true gentleman and a true intellectual. We are very lucky to get the opportunity to listen to him!
Nor in my opinion either. He was on Prager's show on Monday. It was wonderful to hear two such intelligent men talking. :)
