The four British men who returned home from Guantanamo Bay on Tuesday have been released without charge by police.

Moazzam Begg, Martin Mubanga, Feroz Abbasi and Richard Belmar were due to leave Paddington Green police station on Wednesday night, Scotland Yard said.

They had been questioned by anti-terrorist officers in the UK after being held at the camp in Cuba for three years.

The men had been accused by the US of having links to al-Qaeda.

Family reunion

They are now being reunited with their families at a location of their choice, police said.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Shortly before 9pm four men arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000 on January 25 were released without charge.

"This followed liaison between police and the Crown Prosecution Service."

He said the men had been interviewed by anti-terrorist officers after being arrested under section 41 of the act, which referred to the alleged involvement in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.

Mr Abbasi, 24, Mr Belmar, 25, Mr Mubanga, 32, all from London and Mr Begg, 36, from Birmingham, returned to the UK on Tuesday evening in an RAF plane.

Washington had claimed all four were "enemy combatants" who trained at camps run by al-Qaeda.

The Pentagon says they were freed after the UK government promised they would not be a threat to the national security of the US or any of its allies.

Yeh. Kind of strange. I guess as he tried to blow upa plane over America it was seen as Domestic.

I do not want to seem like I am supporting the terrorists here, I just think Gitmo could do better for it self in terms off PR and the systems it has for finding the guilty form the innocent.

You lose an argument, so you turn to ad hominem attacks. Our discussion is over.

Hell, I've never thought of them as innocent, tho' they may be innocent of killing anyone. I merely objected to a 'brave' sit-at-home ranting about the vicious things he'd do to them, when quiet men I know fight in Iraq and Afghanistan.

WTF?

To hell with the Brits, has our own Government let its brains run out like diarrhea for the same of Political Correctness. Not only the issue should be of why they were released, the main issue should be why they aren't swinging from a gibbet!

I spent 12 years in the Army and I'll tell you what I'd do to them: long fall, short rope. End of story.

You think you're the only one with friends in-country?
You think maybe some of us may have lost or almost lost, family on 11 September 2001?
You think maybe some of us have people we care about in harm's way?
You sanctimonious, self-rightous moron.
A lot of other sanctmonious self-rightous morons, fed Bravo Sierra by the imans, are trying to kill as many of us as they can, and you think we should sit back and say nothing?
Try and shut me up, you DF.

Your intelligence shines through your post! I can't compete with your brilliant arguments, Concrete-head, and will now thankfully cease communication with you, also.

"It's war and military rules should apply."

Agreed. The militray code rules out mutilating prisoners and torture, and provide some security for prisoners. Ununiformed skirmishers can indeed be shot at first sight as spies and saboteurs, but "de-balling prisoners" is entirely out of question under military rules.

The UK government may have broken that promise...
