PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona has become the first state to require proof of citizenship when registering to vote, a measure that supporters say is intended to prevent voter fraud. The law went into effect Tuesday after being approved by voters in November. It requires that people provide proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate, when registering to vote and show specified forms of identification when casting a ballot at a polling place.

A civil-rights group and Democratic legislators recently had urged the Department of Justice to reject the law. They argued the changes will erect barriers that will hinder minorities' participation in elections and hamper grassroots voter registration drives.

The Justice Department gave final approval Tuesday.

What I'm hoping for now is a letter in the mail telling me that I have to re-register to vote. That way we can be sure that every voter on the rolls is really a citizen, or really alive, as the case may be.

I'm just guessing, but I think it will indeed cut down on the fraudulent voting. The numbers at whatever elections they have next in AZ might be telling -- Dem votes down 20% across the board?

The difference between just walking up to vote and having to go through the effort of forging up a document is pretty significant for somebody just off the boat or across the border.

The alternative is that the DNC or local officials would have an organized but hush-hush program of forging documents for everybody, and that's a pretty significant step into legal jeopardy.

Meet me here after the next election! :-)

Tucson is different - I was a poll watcher during the last election in a democratic stronghold. I counted over 300 names on the registration with the same PO Box for an address. Its time for the rest of the country to wake up. Its also a problem in Phoenix. Dont beleive me? then volunteer next election at a democrat stronghold youll see what I am talking about. Alas now in Arizona we hopefully will put a stop to this stuff.

"A National card should be issued which is good for life."
"Of course, it will create a new forgery market."

A national ID will be ineffective and will meet with a huge amount of resistance from civil libertarians and conservatives. It will never pass.

If it does, I will do my best to be the first one to publicly burn it. I will not be stamped, bar-coded, tattooed, marked, scarred, or tagged in any other way by my government until my corpse sits lifeless and rotting.

Really....We "record" all kinds of data. They are public records. Birth, Naturalization papers, wills, licenses, SS nos. It's just a matter of transfering them to a suitable form for everyday identification to help eliminate voter fraud and other crimes. It eliminates part of the hunt. People with you outlook seem to think they live all alone in the world and no one knows nothing about them or what they do. Somebody knows!!

If this is the only concern, then may I ask what's wrong with tattooing a bar code on the forehead of every newborn child born in the US? I'm sure we could make it painless. It'd be much easier to just scan it in and have the person's whole life history pop right up. That way, you won't lose your ID card - it's permanently displayed on your skull.

Yes, but that only solves part of the problem of controlling the masses.

The implant should also record the activities of each individual on a twenty-four hour basis which can be read by a governmental scanner.

They could know immediately if you'd smoked a cigarette, dipped snuff, drank more than three beers, had sex with anyone other than your wife and only in the missionary position with her, used any un-PC words, like God, terrorist or illegal immigrant, forgot to fasten your seat belt, went over the speed limit, spanked your child, used more than two gallons of water to flush your commode or disagreed with the ACLU or any decision of the Supreme Court.

Problem solved.

Just wait for the first person to use a mexican ID card in order to vote in a US election.

2006 is going to have all states with central databases rather than county by county databases.

Why is it not the law in all states to provide photoID to vote? Many states have had this for DECADES.

"Problem solved."

Only if it gave offenders a small electrical shock for infractions and released a neurotoxin for the most serious offenders. That's stamp out that doubleplus ungoodthink real quick, eh?

You haven't seen the throngs of illegals taken by bus to the polls in Douglas and Sierra Vista that my county chairwoman has seen.

You haven't seen people register to vote without showing ID in Casa Grande.

You haven't seen voter registration/absentee ballot drives in the nursing homes in Sun City?

The fraud is there, and reporting it is fruitless because the prosecutors won't pursue it.

Excellent idea. In fact it should have been a given in every state for the last 200 years.
