HUNTSVILLE, Texas (Reuters) - A Texas man was executed by lethal injection on Tuesday for the robbery and murder more than 20 years ago of a man carrying $13 in his wallet.
Troy Kunkle, 38, was condemned for killing Steven Horton, 31, in Corpus Christi, Texas, after robbing him on Aug. 12, 1984.
Kunkle's execution was delayed for two hours as the U.S. Supreme Court considered last minute appeals by his lawyers.
In 1984, Kunkle and three accomplices offered Horton a ride in their car as he walked down a Corpus Christi street. When Horton refused to give up his wallet, Kunkle shot him in the back of the head. After killing Horton, an accomplice said Kunkle quoted: "Another day, another death, another sorrow, another breath," a lyric from heavy-metal band Metallica song "No Remorse."
His three accomplices received prison sentences ranging from 30 years to life.
In a final statement while strapped to a gurney in the death chamber, Kunkle sought forgiveness.
"I would like to ask you to forgive me," he said. "I made a mistake and I am sorry for what I did. All I can do is ask you to forgive me. I love you and I will see all of you in Heaven. I love you very much. Praise Jesus. I love you."
He then recited the Lord's Prayer.
Kunkle was the second person executed in Texas this year. He was the 338th put to death since the state resumed capital punishment in 1982, six years after the Supreme Court lifted a national death penalty ban, a total that leads the nation.

As comedian Ron White would say.."If you kill someone in front of several people..we will put u on the express lane"..something like that...
It is by grace that we are saved, not by works. You can't earn your way into heaven like you can into Hell. Whether he was saved or not is not knowable by us and those who are so quick to condemn are dangerously close to assuming themselves equal to God, or, at least, using God's name in vain.
Sort of like, "OK. Bob, now crash the red one." LOL. Like your tagline, too.
Twenty years???? It took TWENTY YEARS????
As I said in another thread, the only reason it took 20 years is because he was sentenced to die before the changes Clinton signed restricting access to the federal courts. (Of course he only signed it because Congress had enough votes to override a veto.) Anyone sentenced to death row before the legislation took effect are grandfathered under the old system and have nearly unlimited appeals to the federal courts.
He said: "I made a mistake". Ohhhh That's what murder is now.... a MISTAKE!
20 years? disgusting.
Nope, Ron White says "some states are abolishing the death penalty....my state is putting in an express lane."
I vote this headline for the Worst Written Headline of the Day.....
See my post directly above. GMTA ;-)
Funny how condemned killers seem to "find Jesus" with such frequency.
Not funny at all... foxholes cause the same experience.
After the killing, Kunkle reportedly recited lyrics from heavy metal band Metallica's song "No Remorse," from the album "Kill 'em All," saying, "Another day, another death, another sorrow, another breath." Later, he reportedly said the killing was "beautiful," according to state reports.Bu-bye, sicko.
"...with the news coming about half an hour after Kunkle was scheduled to die at 6 p.m."
Well, if the news came half an hour after he was scheduled to die, why wasn't he already dead?
I doubt the sincerity of her conversion because she was one of Pat Robertson's pet causes--and, IMNHO, Pat's not sincere, either. (Sincere Christians do NOT go into diamond-mining partnerships with the likes of Samuel Taylor Doe, former thug-in-chief of Liberia.)
The news story I block quoted was run in yesterday's Caller-Times prior to the execution. They hadn't yet posted the links to today's news stories.
I'm sorry; I don't understand your answer.
Kunkle is put to death (Final appeal delays execution 2 hours)
30 death penalty foes hold vigil (Group says it will hold a vigil on eve of every execution)
If he was executed over twenty years ago, why is this news?.........
