Kyoto targets may be met later, Martin says

By OLIVER MOORE Globe and Mail Update

Prime Minister Paul Martin said Wednesday that Canada is just one of many countries that will not hit its Kyoto targets, arguing that there are provisions in the agreement that allow for compliance over a longer period.

With less than a month before the Kyoto Protocol — an international agreement designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions — goes into effect, the caucus appears split over whether Canada can meet its commitments.

When he weighed in on the debate at a Tokyo press conference, Mr. Martin suggested that compliance was not immediately possible. The statement puts him in line with Natural Resources Minister John Efford.

"Yes, it is true that many, many countries are behind on their targets," Mr. Martin said. According to a Canadian Press reporter, he was reacting to Mr. Efford's position that Canada's large industrial polluters cannot possibly meet their initial Kyoto targets....

"Prime Minister Paul Martin said Wednesday that Canada is just one of many countries that will not hit its Kyoto targets,"

I don`t see where they have to comply. As Rush always says libs and socialists only have to feel they are doing something. It is always up to someone else to actually do something.

Does signing a treaty make one forever bound ? Can't they just "withdraw" ?

KYOTO is a corpse looking for a hole to fall in.

Fatally flawed economic wealth redistribution via eco science, it is doomed to fail.

However, if we signed on, it could last for a longer period while siphoning off our wealth...

None of that matters. The whole idea of Kyoto was to cripple the US economy and reduce our influence in the world. We didn't fall for the trap. Kyoto will now wither and be increasingly ignored.

So why are being flogged for not ratifying a treaty that was a farce anyway?

Bush could never get away with a statement like this if he did ratify it. The whole thing is ridiculous and designed to weaken rapidly growing countries like the US, Canada, and Australia.

Relax, Canada. The U.N. never enforces their resolutions and protocols, as long as you grease the correct palms with the proper amount of payola.
