A HERO SALUTES

Casey Owens, a wounded Marine, salutes as his mother Janna Owens cries during the inaugural speech by President Bush. The president pledged to work to heal a country divided by the Iraq war.

"We have known divisions, which must be healed to move forward in great purposes, and I will strive in good faith to heal them."

It would be nice now if our country compensated this hero in a manner that honors his sacrifice.

Another idea is to donate to the VA hospitals. The VA's are bearing a heavier and heavier load. Yesterday, I heard a talk by our local VA hospital director and the VA has a huge task before it. Because of improvements in body armor, etc., more troops are surviving injuries that they wouldn't have survived in the past and this is causing the VA to have to make changes in how they operate. From what I understand, each VA hospital has a person who coordinates receipt of donations (both money and goods).

Just a thought.

the right of those idiots to protest against their government is one of the most important reasons this young man was fighting.

Affirmative. Let 'em protest. But IMHO, what those particular groups stand for and the way they conduct themselves makes them unworthy to stand in the presence of our combat vets. Not that there's anything that can be done about it.

"A hero saluting a leader."

And a proud, loving mother saluting both.

that's it. I believe they provide college assistance for the children of military persons injured or killed in the action.

They showed this Marine on TV during the singing of the national anthem! They did not show that he is in a wheelchair. God bless him and every man and woman who gives of themselves to fight for America!

re: can't remember when I've been so moved by a photo.

Amen! I recall a picture I saw on the news wire when I worked at the newspaper. It was taken at the funeral of a soldier who had died in the line of duty and a member of the honor guard was handing the folded flag to the man's ten-year-old son. What a photo, Mom standing next to the boy, crying. I kept of copy of it somewhere, but could not find to post with this response. I have been saving photos for years, in addition to taking thousands and thousands of my own, and I keep thinking I'll get around to indexing them one day.

Amen! Well put! In fact, in my mind those idiots are simply demonstrating for the lefties among us the difference between this Marine and those who protest the war.

re: The Marine and his mother's comportment combine to a synergistic effect of story

It would have been so easy to have photographed him and not included Mom in the picture. As a photographer my hat is off to the person who took or edited this image! Good eye!
