Editors' Note: LTC Tim Ryan is Commander, Task Force 2-12 Cavalry, First Cavalry Division in Iraq. He led troops into battle in Fallujah late last year and is now involved in security operations for the upcoming elections. He wrote the following during "down time" after the Fallujah operation. His views are his own.
All right, I've had enough. I am tired of reading distorted and grossly exaggerated stories from major news organizations about the "failures" in the war in Iraq...

U.S. Army Lt. Col Tim Ryan, of the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, visits a home in Abu Ghraib, on the outskirts of Baghdad, Iraq, Thursday, June 17, 2004, while investigating a nearby mortar attack. Ryan is reaching out to the tribal and religious leaders in the town of Abu Ghraib and is offering a new beginning in which they would be partners, not adversaries. So far, the deal has worked, and is being looked at as a potential model for when Iraqis regain sovereignty June 30. (AP Photo/Jim MacMillan)

Here's a good excerpt:
The Algerian insurgency of the 1950s and the Iraq insurgency have many similarities. What about Napoleon's campaigns in Sardinia in 1805-07? Again, there are a lot of similarities to this campaign. Have they studied that and contrasted the strategies? Or, have they even read Mao Zedung's theories on insurgencies, or Nygen Giap's, or maybe Che' Gueverra's? Have they seen any of Sun Tzu's work lately? Who are these guys? It's time to start studying, folks. If a journalist doesn't recognize the names on this list, he or she probably isn't qualified to assess the state of this or any other campaign's progress.

Just e-mailed this to the local paper. Told them they should really look at what this soldier is saying, because he's right.
Anyone wanna bet how long it takes for someone to hit the delete key at the paper???
