A group of billionaire philanthropists are to donate tens of millions more dollars to delevelop progressive political ideas in the US to counter the conservative ascdenancy.
George Soros, who made his fortune in the hedge fund industry, Herb and Marion Sandler, the California couple who own a multi billion dollar savings and loan business, and Peter Lewis the chairman of an Ohio insurance company, donated more than $63 million dollars in the 2004 election cycle to organizations seeking to defeat President George W. Bush.
At a meeting in San Francisco last month, the left leaning billionaires agreed to commit an even larger sum over a longer period to build institutions that foster progressive ideas and people.
Far from being disillusioned by the defeat of Sen. John Kerry, the billionaires have resolved to invest further in the intellectual future of the left.
Their committment to provide new money comes amid criticism of the efforts of high profile donors such as Mr. Soros to sway US politics.
The intention is to provide the left with organizations in Washington that match the heft of right wing think tanks such as the Heritage Foundation and American Enterprise Institute. At a state level, the aim is to build a 'deeper progressive bench.'

Why does this man still roam free?
"There must be incredible opportunities in bilking this guy out of his money..."
You may be too late. The leftists who have been bilking people out of their money for decades have probably already faxed in their grant applications.
Isn't Steve Bing the guy that bailed out the mafia murdered from jail?
(I think this is originally from abc news)

Lewis thinks it is cause for concern. "We can identify who the big donors are, but how much do we really know about any of them?" he said. In fact, Democratic Party officials said they knew nothing about the man who law enforcement officials tell ABC News is Bing's friend and business partner Dominic Montemarano, a New York Mafia figure currently in federal prison on racketeering charges.
Montemarano has a long criminal record and is known to organized crime investigators by his street name, Donnie Shacks. "Donnie Shacks' main activity was murder. No question about it. That was his main function for the Colombo family and for organized crime in general. He was one of the top hit men in the New York area," said Joe Coffey, a former NYPD investigator. According to The Los Angeles Times, Bing paid Montemarano's legal fees after his most recent scrape with the law. Montemerano's lawyer said his client was an employee of Bing's.
Soros donates to the campaign. X amount of dollars is paid back. Washed through ads.
Ads and media are used to wash money.
Money may go out the door; but it comes back through the window.

Indymedia.org team in merger talks with CBS/Viacom
George Soros, CEO of Indymedia.org ltd has begun merger talks with the CBS/Viacom News Network to help bring together the Vibrant Staff of the Independant News Network with the resources and Global Consumer Reach of the CBS news network. This follows a meeting of the IMC Board of Directors and key Indymedia shareholders where it was decided that Indymedia needed to branch out from its traditional Liberal readership demographic to encompass more mainstream news interests and readerships....

There are a more than a few libertarians that follow his pro-drug legalization mantra without realizing the game they are playing.
Thanks for the ping!
Soros aspires to be Joseph Goebbels. So long as he lacks the power to have his opponents shot, he'll fail.

Forgive me, Father - I want to sin.
Soros doesn't understand the concept of "sunk cost."
-good times, G.J.P.(Jr.)
I've always said that!
Don't forget Progressive Insurance (the Peter Lewis Ohio insurance connection which seems to be quietly added but rarely commented on). Not sure on the CA savings and loan but if somebody knows, please post it.
Have to give credit for that :...
Soros DID give a lot of money and had a lot of influence in defeating the former communist states from Hungary to Ukraine....
Buying-selling political parties from Serbia to Georgia like commodities to suit his ideas of modern society...
Getting a bit bigheaded from his success, he is trying to form the US to his own image...
Socialism, after all, not such a bad thing.... Even Bush said that he would have much easier job if he was a dictator... (not verbatim quote).... ;-)
Soros nearly destroyed England. Why is an English magazine speaking so favorably of someone that has done many, many times more harm to their nation than Bush ever did or ever will?
I don't remember which old Greek said this, "Know thyself", but Soros and gang should try some old-fashioned self-reflection.
The Left notoriously owns almost every University in America. The government and millions of American families already give these institutions billions upon billions of dollars a year. What influence has the Academy had on politics in America? At best, it's driven millions of folks to the Republicans at the antics of the Professortariat. Is this what the Left needs, think tanks? You have to have ideas first.
