Gov't Fights Atheist Suit Banning Inauguration Prayer

WASHINGTON — The government is asking a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit from an atheist who wants to bar the saying of a prayer at President George W. Bush's inauguration , calling the practice widely accepted and more than 200 years old, according to a court filing released Monday.

Michael Newdow , best known for trying to remove "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance, filed suit last month in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He said the use of a prayer is unconstitutional.

Newdow said that two ministers delivered Christian invocations at Bush's first inaugural ceremony in 2001, and that plans call for a minister to do the same before Bush takes the oath of office again on Jan. 20.

Prayers at presidential inaugurals and legislative sessions go back to 1789, the government said. "There is no reason to reverse course and abandon a widely accepted, noncontroversial aspect of the inaugural ceremony," it said.

Last year, the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals (search) tossed the same lawsuit, saying Newdow did not suffer "a sufficiently concrete and specific injury."

Isn't there enough in this world to worry about without some clown trying to make a "name" for himself?

Would it be un-Christian of me to request that someone shove a large crucifix up Michael Newdow's butt?

I agree. It makes me mad that FOX News had him on for an interview - I believe it was last weekend. Don't give this guy the time of day and maybe he will go away.

Is it unChristian to hope this guy gets to discuss the issue with his maker sooner rather than later?

I guess it is :-(

DON'T FIGHT THIS!!! LET A JUDGE RULE AGAINST THE PRAYER, AND THEN DO IT ANYWAY. IGNORE THE RULING TO WEAKEN THE COURTS.

Here's a thought, let's not refer to him by name but only by the title of "Atheist Nut-job."

I take it this time he's not filing on behalf of anyone else where he has no standing?

The courts shouldnt even give this Butthead a chance for a suit . he should be told to go Sheit in his hat and be done with it.

Whichever "judge" accepts to listen to this jackass deserves to be given a one-way ticket to iran.

The problem is NOT with the idiots in this country -- the problem is with anti-America activist lawyers and judges who would rather be under the british monarchy and own their own serfs ... US

Why else do they use the british monarchy 'title' Esquire? and call themselves "Masters" ???

***Michael Newdow ***

Let him have his fifteen minutes of fame over and over again. He will be forgotten in a few years. Does anyone remember Bob Ingersoll?

As ANDREW JACKSON said year ago, "The courts have made their decision. Now let's see them enforce it!"

They could not.

Why, oh why doesn't the guvmint just ignore this guy? I can't imagine a judge dignifying his suit in any way, but if they find a tame one that goes along, ignore him as well. Just have the inauguration as planned.

**Who?***

Robert Ingersol who lived in the late 1880's. Prolific author and atheist.
A set of his collected works are in the library at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. A conservative Christian university.

Forgotten by most. In another twenty years people will say, "Madeline who?"

"Why, oh why doesn't the guvmint just ignore this guy..."

Just as I started to read this sentence, I was listening to Ray Charles and Johnny Mathis singing Why oh why from Somewhere Over the Rainbow... Scared me. LOL
