CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The confederate flag flying in Elmwood Pinewood Cemetery in uptown Charlotte should be taken down – that is a recommendation from a committee looking into the flag issue.

The confederate battle flag flies above a section of the cemetery dedicated to confederate soldiers. Some were concerned about the image this created for the city.

Last month, the community relations committee executive council met to review information gathered on the flag. The information included public feedback and legal research.

In a draft report, the committee recommended:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A group of political leaders and concerned citizens held a rally Saturday at the Elmwood-Pinewood cemetery to show their support of the Confederate flag being flown at the graves of Confederate soldiers. They dressed up in clothes from the Civil War.

"We feel that it's an insult to the memory of those that fought in the Confederate War, just like it would be an insult to any other person and their memory that fought in World War I, World War II or the American-Spanish war," said cemetery preservationinst Mark Palmer.

A section of the cemetery has been dedicatd to Confederate soldiers for more than a century. The decision to take down the flag or keep the flag flying is in the hands of the city government.

Let's just erase any reference to the Confederacy in American books, memorials, etc.

Let's frickin' pretend it didn't happen because somehow it offends a bunch of MORONS 150 years later.

We need to stop the ethnic cleansing of our history and proud traditions. I can't believe how powerful this nonsense has become.

There is no constitutional right to remain unoffended. If there is, I am offended they are destroying our history and teaching it to our kids.

White-washing history by the left is an old stand-by.

Only idiots try to accomodate them without regard for the consequences.

I'm a born "Yankee", from Upstate New York. My wife is from Minnesotta. We are currently living in North Carolina, about one hour from Charlotte, North Carolina. Got it?

This entire "flag" business among Americans REALLY twists my shorts. We have enemies over-friggin-seas; and terrorists in our country, and these a$$holes are concerned about a confederate flag over a portion of a gravyard? WTF?

(again, shaking head and rolling eyes).

I think we'll got to the opera and get all this stupid hate America, anti-military diatribe out of my system for a few hours.

couple of things...

1. The "Confederate flag" was used by the Confederate Navy (mostly Virginia) and Lee's Army. As I recall my history, that battle flag was one of many, and in fact such diverse flags was a cause for friendly fire deaths. In no way was it ever a flag of a unified Confederate Government, or of a unified Confederate army. In fact, as I read history, the reason why y'all were fighting is so that the stated didn't have to do anything that they didn't want to do, right? A unified flag would've horrified many in the Confederacy.

2. Unfortunately for you, the "Confederate Flag" was adopted by the Dixiecrats in 1948 as they fought desegretation efforts. Granted, it was an issue of Federal - state powers, but the fight was over letting little black boys and girls go to school with little white boys and girls.

3. In Georgia, that flag was adopted (as I recall) circa 1956 as a response to desegretation efforts. It was a direct signal to the Feds that, if they wanted to desegretate Georgia, that another Civil War was a possibility.

Tell you what... why don't you fly something like the "Bonnie Blue Flag" instead? Or one of the flags that the troops of Georgia actually fought under? Why don't you honor your dead by remembering history, instead of a story that you wish was true?

1. Many folks fly the Bonnie Blue

2. The CSA did have 3 unified, representative flags

3. The UDC and SCV honor all American soldiers and were among the first to celebrate Memorial Day as a day of remembrance.

I see that PC is alive and well and it makes me sad. To think that Americans would give up the right to freely express themselves in the name of some amorphous crap-headed totalitarian ideology called Political Correctness really pisses me off. I served 20 years defending the Constitution not Political Correctness. If people are offended by that flag, the flag of my ancestors, then they have the right not to look at it, or move to a State like Massachusettes that panders to screaming liberal gaffers. What they don't have is the right to infringe upon me or my ancestors. And just because a stupid assed group of losers like the KKK adopted that flag, they think it now means racism. It really shows how gullible and ignorant the American populace is.

Agreed. Growing up the South, I have seen this stuff escalate very much in the last 10 years. I mean, it's a freakin cemetary. It's not a public building, it's a graveyard containing the people who fought underneath that banner. I think it's a matter of respect for the dead, personally. Who hangs out in graveyards anyway. Methinks someone is looking for something offensive in this.

As one old guy told me several years ago, "Mark, too many people are putting too many hands in the business of running the United States of America."

When in schoold, I never understood why there was a rift between the North and the South. My son is named after General Lee, because we did have ancestors from the South. When Jeffrey Lee Davis, my intent was to knit his name to both sides of the Mason Dixon line.

You're largely correct, except that ANY symbol of the Confederacy is immediately pounced upon.

Instead of letting southern states honor their own war dead, the liberals want them treated like Saddam did his mass graves. It's pathetic.

The standing flagpole should be used to fly the state flag of 1861 or another confederate flag not linked to hate groups.

Hate groups? Hate groups???!!!

Y'mean all the guys, including my dad, who have a bumper sticker or mud flaps with the stars & bars, they're hate groups???!!!

My wife's forebearers, who fought at Shiloh, Corinth and Brice's Crossroads, they and her family were part of a hate group???!!!

If the Crips and Bloods perniciously adopt the Stars & Stripes as their symbol, are we going to tear down and demean the flag of the United States of America? Merely because it has been abused by a "hate group"?

Somebody needs to do some serious thinking here. And apologizing!

The committee must be illegal aliens from Zimbabwe. It is only a matter of time they do dig up the graves and rename the park, Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Just watch, we should do this so we don't keep offending the affirmative action promoted minorities.

Why don't you honor your dead by remembering history, instead of a story that you wish was true?

Excuse me for asking, but that's a totally obtuse question. What do you mean by that? How is the person it is addressed to supposed to respond? What story do you believe he wishes were true?
