Check out the actual investigatory panel report -- it credits Free Republic (accurately) for first questioning the authenticity of thye documents. The actual investigatory report can be seen

I haven't been following you otherwise I would have seen you around. Plus haven't been on the internet much lately altogether. Nice to see you again.
Same here.
-good times, G.J.P.(Jr.)
You are correct.
The FCC can and should be more aggressive on all of this.
The "as she sees it" stuff at the time of the Gore 2000 debacle was pretty blatant, too.
On the other hand, Rather is *like* (not is) a racist in that sometimes it's nice to have the bias be so overt and blatant, rather than subtle and hidden, so you can see what you're dealing with and defeat it. Rather's nothing if not wearing his political heart on his sleeve.
Still and all, it's a scandal that CBS didn't fire him.
Hope you're doing well.
Courage!,
Looks like the women were the fall guys.
FR is a requirement when watching breaking news.
Now if only they could put the running thread comments on the crawl.
Thanks! I still think something is weird about that........
Do we know the name of the "supposed freelance producer" named smith?
I'd sure like to know why nothing more was given on this freelancer?
Dowd or Ivins? Who wants to guess?
Not too lazy here. I read the biggest part of it.
No, I'm saying you missed the obvious in your comment. Obviously, the CBS memos were created in MS Word because MS Word, with default settings, and scaled to match on word, or even just line boundries, overlays exactly, letter for letter, line spacing as well. And Composer was used to duplicate the same, and failed because it used only something like four different letter widths, compared to 20 or more for this particular Truetype or PS, and the line spacing was not the same, never mind that no one used Composer for that sort of task.
If you need clarification of what I'm talking about, or was at the time, just check this out. I posted it a few days into Rathergate, summarizing what others had discovered, from the 'blogs' and elsewhere, and which many in the LM still might wish to deny, even after the report (the whitewash report for C . . BS).
Thanks for the reply. Long time no hug. Guess work is going ok for you?
Ronald Reagan: (paraphrased...)"if you don't care who gets the credit, there's no limit to what you can accomplish"
Ronald Reagan got all the credit that was due him.
This discussion is about credit (note title of thread). My point is SINCE credit is being discussed, let's give credit where credit is due. It was a collaborative effort, but it was Tanker, and mainly Howlin, who started the engine. Buckhead was instrumental, no doubt, yet he gets all the credit. Everything I've read or seen on tv mentions him as the Freeper who first spotted the suspicious documents. It's simply not true. Not true at all.
I know Tanker, Howlin, Buckhead, Powerline, etc., figure prominently in this... as does Mr. Robinson for having started FreeRepublic and affording a venue for these Patriots... as does William F. Buckley for having started National Review so far back that he was the lone voice in the (media...) wilderness, but not so lone that it didn't plant the seed that allowed a FreeRepublic to grow, to be populated by the likes of buckhead, and to finally be what it is today, and hopefully continue to grow.
Put it simply, I don't CARE who gets the credit; Rather is going down, his "retirement" - politely-displaced from the actual firings such as it is - is a direct result of the rathergate fiasco... and it doesn't much matter that those same media types continue to insist nodding their heads in unison as they agree in their self-anointed superiority "how it really went down" when you, I and a million other Patriots know the truth.
I do not NEED validation from the people who populate the very same den of thieves in order to feel the extra tug of satisfaction at their come-uppance. My juice comes from seeing them scamper like roaches shooeing away from the beam of a flashlight in the first place. What does it matter to me that - in their running amok as they mouth their false platitudes, bowing out with "mea culpas" - they would then look up and say, "yonder is the person who holds this light upon us"???
In the long run, we ALL are the ones holding that flashlight.
That's the difference. It matters to me.I do care that credit is given to the right people. My point is that Buckhead gets the credit for blowing the lid off this. Even in your post, "the likes of Buckhead". I think Buckhead is all that and a bag of chips, but somehow, Tanker and Howling got lost in all this.
fine. you care about credit, I don't. Remember that this report was fm the media (albeit Fox, near as i can tell fm the orig post...) - don't you think it's a bit off to both want the media rightfully taken down a notch for their blatant misrepresentation/lies, then want them to give truthful claim (in the form of proper credit-assignment)?
I don't need that, not from them. For me, the people that count are like the great majority of Freepers... and they - we - know how this went down, and who started the ball rolling.
I've heard the wrong credit being assigned by media that I like and trust such as Brit Hume, Fred Barnes, Sean Hannity etc. If FR is cited, only Buckhead is mentioned. Or worse, it's not mentioned at all, and Powerline gets full credit.
There's no shame in enjoying credit. It's only natural for people to feel that way. You don't. I get it.
just read my last post - i don't put much value on the words that come from main stream media in the first place - any "words of truth" from them ring hollow and will for a long time.
Other than that, I'm happy for you that you get it. Congratulations.
Another oldie (January 2005), worth a second (or first) look, given that Katie Al-Couric has taken over Rather's spot.
