Apple and the Tsunami (Vanity)
mac.com ^ | 9 Jan 2005 | Tony Demark

Posted on 01/09/2005 1:23:52 PM PST by StayAt HomeMother

I am posting this as a vanity because it doesn’t quite fit other categories.

Apple still has a link to tsunami relief contributions (via Red Cross) on their home page. Another way they are helping is by facilitating access to tsunami pictures.

Several FReeper threads about the tsunami have included or linked to DigitalGlobe’s “Before and After" satellite pictures which can also be found at:

http://homepage.mac.com/demark/tsunami/9.html

As much as some FReepers hate Apple, the following link may also be of interest:

.Mac Security warned the poster that the satellite images on his .Mac HomePage are very popular and are generating excessive bandwidth usage for the account. They requested he move the images to an area of that is not publicly available.

The man posting the “Before and After” pictures responded to Apple, “I've taken steps to lower the required bandwidth for the site by over 70%. Plus, I will be offloading some more bandwidth onto some mirrors. Would this be enough to allow the site to continue where it is? ….”

Yesterday Apple (.Mac Security) responded that the changes have gone far in improving the bandwidth usage and that Apple should be able to maintain it for now.

As the poster of the Before and After pictures writes, “I would like to thank Apple. They have provided and continue to provide a great service. They went above and beyond the call of duty in supporting this site as more and more people found it. Three (3) terabytes is a lot of traffic and I know of no other service that would have continued as long as it did; many other places would have simply redirected the traffic or charged me an arm and a leg. Even in light of this, though, I'd still like to find places to host mirrors of the site. I'm looking for sites that would be able to handle an additional 50 GB of traffic a day and has at least 1 Mbit/s of extra bandwidth. I can't imagine that this traffic will last much longer, but, it would be great if the demand could be spread around a little. If you can help, please contact me."

What amazing pictures. Thank you so much. It makes a person stop and think, when you see some of the areas are almost gone!

What is the purpose of this post though???

Not to mention the obvious point that those DigitalGlobe pictures can be easily found at...DIGITALGLOBE...

(Purpose? Do vanities need a purpose?)

The site, which does credit DigitalGlobe as the source of the pictures, has "Click To See Before" and "Click To See After" buttons that are particularly useful. With a slow dial up modem it is even easy to stop the changeover in the middle to see especially dramatic contrasts.

(That's us Mac users - we like things easy, and we like good graphics.)

I am not a computer expert, but three terabytes seems like a lot of user bandwidth for a host site to allow a user for public access at no extra cost.

IMO, this site is absolutely the best by far. Sure, the source photos are from DigitalGlobe; we've seen them all before. However, this "slide show" of sorts is stunning: perfect superimposition, perfect alignment as you scroll over the "before" and "after"'s...I downloaded this site and it's all I'll need as far as these sat photos are concerned.

By the way, I use a Mac G5, but that has nothing to do with it. They're breathtaking regardless of platform.

Why waste bandwidth on topics like football games?

It's only a microscopic fraction of the bandwidth wasted on Windows users spyware, worms and viruses. How many times has the AdAware link been posted, ad nauseum? By comparison, Apple conserves bandwidth.

When I said "enter topics" I meant, "enter an existing topic". :') I'm on SM's mac list.
