Travel: Smokers called Animals In A Zoo
Minnesotans Against Smoking Bans ^ | 1-8-05 | Robert Hayes Halfpenny

Posted on 01/08/2005 9:20:21 AM PST by SheLion

I am surprised Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson didn’t refer to the smokers as swine in a pig sty. Isn’t that, after all one of the one of the first images that comes to mind when think of a pen?  Before I am offended by “da mayor” I would have to be offended by the reference to the term smoking pens. In a city and state  that was founded by a group of people so seriously reviled for their own beliefs in years past, you would think they would be among the first to take a “live and let live” attitude about the behavior and choices of others. Clearly the past lessons learned about intolerance by the Mormons must now have been forgotten.

Only 88 airports nationwide is hardly a mandate to make one’s own airport smoke free. Furthermore if these “smoking kiosks” are eliminated it will only cause people to find other places to smoke. Delta Airlines is correct in standing behind the rights of the smokers.  Perhaps they have taken note that incidence of “air rage” only became prevalent AFTER smoking was banned on aircraft. It should also be noted that since the ban, they no longer use fresh air to ventilate the planes; instead, they just run the air through a filtrations system which in an enclosed environment further exacerbates the problem.

Mayor Anderson’s pompous arrogance in stating that the ban will help smokers to “break the habit” is outrageous. It is not his job to be neither a social engineer nor the arbiter of personal choices. I do know however, that as long as Salt Lake City and Utah continue down this Draconian path of heavy handed intolerance, I will avoid their state in very way possible. I will not travel to it, I will not travel thru it, and I will not support my company scheduling a convention there.

BANS ARE BAD! Read it again, BANS ARE BAD! Banning blacks from white facilities---BAD! Banning books---BAD! Banning Beer---Bad! If the people of Utah agree that these bans are bad, then they must also agree that banning smoking is also BAD! I would certainly hope at this juncture they are starting to realize that any action, that would favor a smoking ban of any type, will only create far more harm than good. IN all fairness I should note their may be one kind of good ban. That of course would be banning Mayor Anderson from further political office at the next election.

I didn't make that claim. If you go back to my post you will see the "?". I was commenting on the authors claim that rage was not a problem till they banned smoking.

Hmmm. You somehow took this statement, "Perhaps they have taken note that incidence of “air rage” only became prevalent AFTER smoking was banned on aircraft."
And stated exactly, "Interesting. Why are smokers more violent than non-smokers?"
Rather than something not so matter-of-factly such as, "Interesting. Why does this author seem to strongly suggest to the reader that smokers may be more violent than non-smokers?"

Another question: If you're so against smokers, why enter the smoking threads and try to stir the pot? Smokers can't even have their own threads anymore without grief from the opposition? Statements like, "I think I have just found another irritable smoker. Or is it, another irritable smoker has found me." seem almost as if you're trying to provoke smokers. Along with, "No. Just the typical smokers." It just kinda makes it seem like you have intense resentment or hostility toward us. I'm not a pilot, does this mean that I should post on all of the aviation lists and complain about pilots, their wages, their habits, their attitudes and their lifestyle choices?

It's not just you, but being a new member to the "Puff List," I was just curious about the reasoning behind jumping into a thread about smoking, KNOWING smokers will post, and start trashing them.

SheLion, this happen all the time?

Not to mention obesity. That one is going to be targeted too, but they make victims out of them and villians out of the people they buy their food from.

Yeah. You'd think that with a title like:
Roll Your Own: My Experiences (Saving tons and smoking less)
They'd take the hint that there may be smokers on the thread who have no intention of quitting.

"When my daughter was pregnant they went to Florida and she decided to have a beer on the patio. One lousy beer. A woman came over and confronted her about drinking the beer while pregnant.Unbelievable"

What a jerk. All of us over 30 should be dead according to all these health nannies. I just fail to understand why people think these behaviors are a-okay. I have a mother, I don't need any more. And it really fries me when kids (still in grade school) decide they can boss adults. Ack.

I didn't come here and start trashing smokers. I commented on the original article and in the process have been repeatedly trashed by the smokers. If you are not interested in honesty and the facts, fine, but maybe some lurkers are interested in the "other side" to the posted propaganda in the original article.

Not to mention the hay fever, asthma attacks and allergic reactions due to breathing in the dust and mold.

Back in 2000, I was flying to CA and I was in a plane that had the dust and mold hanging out of the vents above. It was soooooo gross.

Then why come back?

I have NEVER posted on the Terry Schiavo threads because I'm afraid my opinions would irritate most of the posters.

I'm not backing away from confrontation,I just don't think it's worth my time or the time of the other people on the thread.

I was sitting in my own car having a cigarette when a young man about 15 years old starting laughing and making fun of me for smoking. I am probably his grandmother's age.

I'm glad you are ok. That could have turned ugly.

SheLion, this happen all the time?

Yes it does which is why I stopped participating on these puff threads..I haven't been around these parts for quite some time and its because after having spent all day at work dealing with rude and ignorant people, fighting 50 minutes of traffic with equally rude and ignorant drivers just to drive 16 miles home, I couldn't stand having to discuss smoking issues with fellow smokers and then come under assault by some jerk nico-nazi who professes to be a conservative but yet has no respect for freedom of choice or rights of private property owners.

It just wasn't conducive to having a relaxing evening on FR talking with like-minded friends.......

Then why come back?

It doesn't bother me in the least when I am bashed by the smokers. I don't engage in those type of juvinile tactics and I leave it to the lurkers to make their own judgements. I look at the original article and if it merits comment, I comment. In this article, the author flat out lied and his untruth should be exposed.

They sell menthol tobacco? I didn't know that, and that's one reason why I hadn't started to roll my own...regular ones taste like dirt to me.

Yes!!! True menthol. I couldn't believe it. Good stuff.

You see, it is much easier for our government and its associated legal whores to profit from a "stigmatized" product than a banned one........

You've got that right.

I've been saying it for years that smoking bans, particularly for bars, taverns, and pool halls, are a back door means of eliminating that particular "blight" on society.

I remember one of the more vocal antis in Delaware talking about how the bans won't hurt the bars, in fact they would be bursting with more business from people like him who didn't go in them because of the smoking.

After the ban took effect, I ran into him and invited him out for a beer at a local pub. When he declined, I asked him why not, since he said he would be among those that would be helping the bottom lines of these places once the smokers left. his answer was........"I don't drink."

In other words, everything he said to legislators and the press about the smoking ban was a bald-faced lie. And he was proud of it and was looking forward to seeing the local taverns go out of business.

While I was pregnant I got confronted by those holier-than-thou types on a regular basis.......there faces really turned red when I showed the bottle label to them......I was drinking either non-alcoholic beer or sparkling cider.

One nosy busybody even had the gall to comment to the bartender at one of the local restaurants, a good friend of mine, that she should really have a talk to me about drinking, because he saw me coming out of the liquor store. the owner of that liquor store, another friend of mine, was special ordering a particular brand of NA beer for me, and would call me when the delivery was made.

some people just have nothing better to do than worry about what others are doing.

SheLion, this happen all the time?

Yes, it happens ALL the time.

About the only time the smokers are left alone by the nico-nasty-gnatzies is when Just another Joe opens the Lounge on Friday.

I know JaJ has been super busy of late and doesn't get a chance to open it often, and I'm generally not around on Friday afternoons, but maybe I should ask him for his code, puff list, and She lion's list (I keep losing them) and I could open it up on Friday mornings........

We'll see.
