Family wishes ghostly noises would just go away

Occupants believe their West Inverness house is spooked

by Joseph M. Giordano

When members of the Meyers family saw a figure in the window of the Jasmine Road house they wanted to buy, they should have known something was up.

But they didn't, and now they may be living with something paranormal.

"His name is Dexter," said 8-year-old Ozzie Meyers V. "And he kept asking me to read to him."

Ozzie's parents, Jennifer, an apparently down-to-Earth woman who works for Johns Hopkins University, and Ozzie IV, a stay-at-home dad, thought it might have been an imaginary friend. Then something happened that sent a chill through their West Inverness household.

"Ozzie [V] came to us about two years ago and told us that the little boy in the attic wanted him to play with his train tracks," said Jennifer Meyers, who bought the house in 1998. "My husband went to the attic to check it out. He found old toy train tracks under the insulation. We were convinced after that."

The house, in the 2000 block of Jasmine Road, was built in 1957 on a plot of land that used to be part of the Lynch family farm, according to Baltimore County land records.

The Meyers family moved in after a series of renters had lived in the home, Jennifer Meyers said.

Though the renters had no problems with anything out of the ordinary, they had an interesting occurrence at a party they hosted at the house, according to a neighbor.

"Just before the Meyerses moved in, there was a party at the house," said the neighbor, who asked that her name not be used. "And they had invited a psychic. During the party, the psychic was at the [dining room] table and told [the guests] that someone had brought a spirit into the house."

The neighbor has lived in her home for 30 years and believes that something is not quite right about the Meyerses' house.

"I believe them," the neighbor said. "I hear something running up and down the stairs when no one is at home. There are thumps on the wall and other noises when the house is empty."

In December, Jennifer and her husband appeared on The Montel Williams Show when celebrity psychic Sylvia Brown was the guest and the topic was "the unknown." The opening to the attic where the family hears strange sounds.

"We weren't too happy with [Brown's] answer," Jennifer Meyers said. "She was contradictory and didn't make any sense."

Part of the show was filmed at the Meyerses' home and featured a clip - recorded by one of the show's cameramen- of the lights above the dining room table rapidly going on and off.

"That seems to happen when we're at dinner and arguing about something," Jennifer Meyers said.

Everyone in the house has had strange experiences they can't explain.

"I hate doing laundry in the basement alone," Jennifer Meyers said. "I have seen the figure of a man downstairs."

Ozzie IV., who was always skeptical, has seen a shadow that moved up the steps from the first floor.

"That's what made a believer out of me," he said. "I also woke up and there was a man in front of our bed. My wife saw it too."

Beside the banging sounds against the wall and noises in the basement, the family has several questionable photographs that include a dark anomily around the children, especially their 17-month-old daughter, Genevieve.

"This black shape appears in a number of pictures of our daughter," Jennifer Meyers said. "We have one of an orb above her head at the christening."

Orbs are photographic anomalies that some believe indicate the presence of a ghost and like any other "proof" of the unknown are highly debatable.

One type of evidence that's harder to explain away is electronic voice phenomena (EVP).

EVP are picked up on video and audio tape but are unheard and unseen while the original recorded interview is taking place, according to the American Association of Electronic Voice Phenomena's Web site.

Strange sounds were picked up on an audio tape even though they weren't heard while the family's interview with The Eagle was taking place at the house. The sounds crop up over both Jennifer Meyers' and her son's voices throughout the recording.

Though not especially religious, the Meyerses have had everyone from a Catholic priest to a practitioner of Wicca come through and bless the house.

"Nothing seems to work," Jennifer Meyers said. "We've even yelled 'In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, go back where you came from,' but it didn't work."

"I try to keep a sense of humor about it all," she said. "But I want whatever it is to stop scaring my children."

Okay, you know when there's a great story but there happens to be a couple little details that really get in the way and keep you from really enjoying it?.....

Exhibit 1:

from the link to the article...

The opening to the attic where the family hears strange sounds.

Exhibit 2:

from the article...

”Ozzie's parents, Jennifer, an apparently down-to-Earth woman who works for Johns Hopkins University, and Ozzie IV, a stay-at-home dad, thought it might have been an imaginary friend.”

For Heaven's sake, you're a "stay-at-home Dad"! That means you have all the time in the world to do what most dads only have the weekends to do. Go buy a paint scraper and a gallon of fresh paint! (If money is a problem, go to the mistake shelf at your local Lowe's or Home Depot) But, for goodness sake, get off your haunted @$$!!!

Sorry for the outburst, please resume your regularly scheduled posting...

That is a very interesting story. I have heard of this kind of activity before and believe that most paranormal experiences are of the nature you described.

At the end of my post I mentioned having "more stories" about the house. One of them was very similar to what you described.

This time though it involved both of my brothers and a visitor we had sleeping over. We were all up late, since it was a Friday night. We were just talking when all of a sudden a red dot appeared on the floor. I was sure it was a reflection of some kind from one of the windows so I got off the bed and went to the first window. I flailed my arms and moved aroung the window but the red dot was not affected. I asked my brother, who was sitting next to the other window, to do the same. The red dot then began to, how do I say this, expand and retract. At the same time this was happening the room became extremely cold (and by the way, it was September in Oklahoma at this time, about 70 at one a.m.). The red "dot" became a glowing red pit and air rushed from the room to the "pit" and as soon as that happened it was gone. We all sat there in amazement. No one spoke of the incident outside of our circle for a very long time.

There are a few more, but I'll save them for later.

Well knight, thanks for asking. I mentioned to a colleague, who I related the story to soon after posting, that I had forgotten to "end" the story. I asked the boy what they were doing in the room. His mouth was moving, but I could hear nothing. And when I say nothing, I mean literally nothing. I looked at the T.V., no sound; it was as if I had become temporarily deaf. The boy got a puzzled and antagonized look on his face, looked at his sister, mouthed something, and then they both walked through the front door. Yes, you saw that correctly. They walked "through" the front door. That was the part that made me go through the entire house, turn every light on, and I even called the school to get hold of my parents to come home earlier. Unfortunately, the concert they attended was over, and they had gone with the other band parents and members to Mazzio's Pizza (no plug intended), which was kind of a tradition. They got home about 11 p.m. and were startled to find me awake, with all the lights on. They thought I had just become scared, gave me a consoling hug and put me to bed.

Hey Stevio, get off your high horse and read the all of the post. It was 1978 in "rural" Oklahoma, and they had alerted the neighbors and told me to contact them if there was any problem. I knew that would get some attention, but it really isn't that big a deal.

The movie "The Serpent and the Rainbow" was based on a true story about just this subject. It is a Wes Craven film, and very good BTW.

Thanks. That is so strange about sounds going mute. I bet you don't tell that story often. I have my own ghost story and it must be like the alien abductees, you just keep it to yourself. Plus, I always felt talking about it might make it repeat.

Interesting they went through the door when they could have taken a short cut and went through the wall just as well. They may have been used to the house. I used to work in a huge jail (not Abu Grahab my friend, not Abu Grahab) and they were moving out huge equipment and had to remove the walls from my area. So I ended up in this big area without walls. Yet strangely the officers were somehow compelled to use the door which was no longer there. They and I could have just walked to and fro from any direction but you just found yourself using the "door" even though it meant extra walking. It was funny watching people practically thunking themselves on the head and have a V8 moment when they realized what they had done. Maybe the ghost children just knew that was the way to come and go.

Last summer many of my family had a reunion at the family farm in the Southern Tier of N.Y. State. I took about 50 digital photos. In the photos taken outdoors where my 2-year-old nephew was in the shot somewhere, there were one, sometimes two, glowing balls showing in the photos that weren't there when I took the pics. Pictures were taken in different locations on the property, and taken on different days over a week's time. The house was built by my great- great- etc. grandfather in 1830. Nobody knows how to explain it.

A fairly good description from Dave Hunt.

Some more insight might be gleaned by associated death as a state of existence involving separation.

God also provides a soul life upon our physical birth, distinct from physical life.

A living spirit is breathed in us upon regeneration by the Holy Spirit at the moment of saving faith alone through Christ alone.

Upon separation of spirit from the body, the spirit returns to God. Those who are unbelievers have not been reborn in the spirit and remain separate from Him.

Just as there are many creatures in the physical domain, I suspect there may also be many creatures of the spirit domain. Some elect, others good for nothingness.

There also exist souls in the spiritual domain separate from our physical domain. The soul having characteristics of emotion, conscience, perception, memory, reason, logic, language, volition,..to mention a few.

Physically, we might express certain phenomenon as being strictly attributable to inorganic and physical laws, but even in the studies of the human body, we identify potential energy and kinetic energy, chemical energy, and ionic conduction or electrochemical energy.

Some after death phenomena are explicable in terms of energy, such as a body laying in state is not uncommon to convulse or lurch up within a coffin. This is frequently identified as due to biochemical dynamics hours even days after death.

Other phenomena isn't always so easily explained. Some who do not know how to classify such events might tend towards hasty generalization and label any such phenomena as supernatural, whereas those who actually experience a supernatural event might just as well hastily generalize and misidentify the event as naturally explicable.

I've found it best to recognize that at least three sets of persons with volition exist and have been involved in such phenomenon. God as the Creator is in control of all things. Angels, the elect and fallen are known to exist with heirarchies within their domain,..and man, who we are probably sufficiently challenged to understand.

Just as God created many different animals, all with bodies and a thinking mechanism we might parallel to a soul, although lacking eternal life, and we see these animals in the zoo without much doubt they exist,...likewise in the domain of the spirit there may exist many creatures.

The real trick I've found is to remain faithful to God through Christ and regardless the situation, there is no temptation too great than which can't be resisted and no cursing that isn't rewarded by blessing by Him as long as we remain faithful through Him.

BTW, I've found the point on no temptation too great than that which can be resisted might also explain many cases of reported supernatural activity where the man is conscious of a threat, but unable to respond. No matter waht the will of n adversary might become, those who remain faithful through Him are well protected in things eternal.

The cold "zone" is what really freaked us out the most. It was so odd, and seemed to be the solid physical indication that something was amiss. I told this story once to a woman who was at a wedding and she related being at another family event, sitting by her cousin. They began talking about their mothers, who had been sisters and were both deceased. The weird part was that as they talked about them, the area around them became cold, like a vacuum, which made no sense at the table. Both felt it and sensed that something was wrong. When one said to the other, "I think that they're here with us tonight", the icy cold went away like it had never happened and the area around them resumed its normal room temperature. When people start to tell strange stories, the vacuous cold is the thing I look for to tell me if it's authentic or just bs.

Thanks for a thoughtful and well-articulated post...

"No matter what the will of an adversary might become, those who remain faithful through Him are well protected in things eternal."

Amen...

Put on His armor. Wear it well. Pay attention to the "chinks."

The Adversary stalks in the conscience, subconscience, and in our dreams, looking for ANY opening with which to devour us -- and especially those who abide in Him.

Wow. I didn't think of that. I also saw a post earlier from someone who presented the theory that apperition sightings are the work of Satan. The poster mentioned that our soul eithe ascends to heaven or decends to hell and does not stay here. Then there is the Catholic idea of Purgatory. Where that is, and if a "soul" has access to this world from it is a question. And as for telling the story often, I don't tell people unless they are open to it. I know what I saw, whether it was a trick of the devil, some waking dream, or whatever is irrelevant. I know it was there and don't really care what others think. BTW, I have had other paranormal experiences that are just as contraversial and scary as that one.
