~ Saturday Night Jukebox ~
Theme: Tribute To Elvis Presley

The FR Canteen Saturday Night Jukebox Proudly Presents:
A Tribute To The King of Rock N Roll -- Elvis Presley!
Today (January 8th) would have marked Elvis' 70th birthday.
In tribute to him, we are going to take a short journey through his life and music! If you would like to join the fun, please post anything Elvis today. If you would prefer to hear other music, please post all the requests on the thread, via FReepmail, or email us at canteenusa@canteenusa.com with "Music Request" in the subject line.

As always, please remember that the Canteen Music Dedication has always been about the Troops and their families.

Elvis Aaron Presley
Born: January 8th, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi
Parents: Gladys and Vernon Presley
Siblings: Jesse Presley (died at birth)
Children: Lisa Marie Presley born February 1, 1968
Died: August 16, 1977 in Memphis, Tennessee
Cause of Death: cardiac arrhythmia

  1. Known as the "King Of Rock"
  2. It is estimated that Elvis Presley has sold over one billion record units worldwide, more than anyone in record industry history. (From elvis.com)
  3. The only tours outside of America were all in Canada.
  4. Elvis has had no less than 149 songs to appear on Billboard’s Hot 100 Pop Chart in America.
  5. He was also a leading artist in the American country, R&B, and gospel fields, and his chart success in other countries was substantial.
  6. In 1961, Elvis gave a benefit concert at Bloch Arena in Hawaii that raised over $65,000 toward the building of the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor.
  7. The 1984 W.C. Handy Award from the Blues Foundation in Memphis recognized Elvis for "keeping the blues alive in his music - rock and roll."
  8. In 1986, Elvis was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. His presenters were none other than Sean and Julian Lennon--the sons of John Lennon.
  9. Is a direct descendant of Abraham Lincoln's great-great grandfather, Isaiah Harrison.
  10. One of only a handful of artists inducted into both The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame and The Country Music Hall of Fame. Others include Johnny Cash and Hank Williams.
  11. The Beatles were admirers of his work and although John Lennon said they enjoyed his company very much, Elvis himself, ironically, thought that the Beatles were a bad influence on America's youth.
  12. More people watched _Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii (1973)_ (live Via Satellite TV special) than watched Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.
  13. In 1975 he purchased a poor black East Memphis woman an electric wheel chair and picked her up and personally sat her in it. The woman's teenage daughter told Elvis she liked his car. He gave it to her and even gave her boyfriend a job.

More info about Elvis will be posted throughout the music dedication. Also, all the information can be found at www.elvis.com and www.imdb.com . There are hundreds of other places with Elvis info and pictures.

When I was in the ninth grade I saw Elvis in concert in Lubbock, Texas. He hadn't been on the scene for very long, but the auditorium was PACKED! My girlfriends and I made our way down front and stood right under the stage! It was awesome and we screamed our lungs out! A cop who was on duty asked me why we screamed so much, and all I could say is "I don't know--we just have to!" He was soooooo cute and just flirted with the audience. We were overwhelmed by him! *aaaahhhh*

I hadn't seen any Pelicans like that, now I know why:

*********************************************

Pelicans of the World
Australian Pelicans Australian PelicanAustralian Pelicans (Pelecanus conspicillatus) can be found in Australia, and occasionally New Guinea, New Zealand, and Sulawesi.

These pelicans can be found on lakes, rivers, along coastline, and in estuaries. They normally fish for food in groups, herding the fish into shallow water where they can easily be caught.

Australian Pelicans are sometimes called Australasian or Spectacled Pelicans. They are white in color with black wingtips. They have a wing span up to 10 ft. Australian Pelicans have the longest beaks of any bird in the world.

General Info about Pelicans

Brown Pelican
Dalmation Pelican
Eastern (Great White) Pelican
Peruvian Pelican
Pink Backed Pelican
Spot Billed Pelican

What's Worth Keeping?

Read: Genesis 25:27-34

For one morsel of food [Esau] sold his birthright. —Hebrews 12:16

Bible In One Year: Genesis 23-26

A story is told of a man who loved old books. He met an acquaintance who had just thrown away a Bible that had been stored in the attic of his ancestral home for generations. "I couldn't read it," the friend explained. "Somebody named Guten-something had printed it." "Not Gutenberg!" the book lover exclaimed in horror. "That Bible was one of the first books ever printed. A copy just sold for over two million dollars!"

His friend was unimpressed. "Mine wouldn't have brought a dollar. Some fellow named Martin Luther had scribbled all over it in German."

This fictitious story shows how a person can treat as worthless that which is valuable. That's what Esau did. Although he was a nice enough fellow, Esau was a "profane" man because he sold his spiritual birthright "for one morsel of food" (Hebrews 12:16). Only when it was too late to undo his wretched bargain did he realize that he had sacrificed the permanent on the altar of the immediate.

We had better be careful of the "bargains" we make in life. Our culture places a high price on what is worthless and throws away as worthless what is of eternal value.

Ask the Lord to help you discern what's worth keeping and what is best discarded. —Haddon Robinson

The little choices we must make
Will chart the course of life we take;
We either choose the path of light
Or wander off in darkest night. —D. De Haan

Why pay the high price for this world's bargains when eternal life is free?
