Now, this teacher in Orange, California accused of having sex with students appears in court. She's a middle school teacher. For those of you in Rio Linda -- I don't think there are schools in Rio Linda -- middle schools, junior high, which would be 7th and 8th grade, maybe 9th. This Orange middle school teacher accused of having sexual contact with two 13-year-old boys who were former students was arraigned yesterday. Her name is Sarah Suzanne Bench-Salorio. She's 28. Charged with 20 counts of lewd acts on a child under 14. She taught for two years at the Santiago charter middle school. Was arrested Tuesday, the day after one of the boys told his parents about the alleged conduct with his former teacher. She taught reading and English. She was booked Wednesday at the Orange County jail. Bond set at $1 million.
The Orange County jail clerk, sergeant David Hill said, "Our investigation indicates that the teacher initiated the sexual conduct and this contact took place over a period of several months. We're looking at events that spanned several months throughout 2004 and part of that investigation is to determine if it happened sooner than that. We believe the contact took place at various locations, and we're investigating whether it was at the party's homes or at the school." After the one boy came forward, a follow-up investigation determined there was a second victim, Hill said, but he didn't know if both boys knew about each other. He said, "We are confident in the solidity of our charges." So they we want to the school. Fox News sent a crew to the school. They asked students what they thought about this. We have a little montage here, and who do we have? Female students. A montage of female students talking about the charges against their teacher, Sarah Bench-Salorio, who allegedly had sexual contact with two of her 13-year-old male students.
STUDENT: She would dance like at the dances. Like we'd be in a group and, like, she'd join in.
STUDENT: Really cool teacher and everyone really loves her.
STUDENT: And there's so many guys at the school, they like -- they actually, like, like Mrs. Salorio, and, like, in a way like that. And so, like, they'll say anything.
RUSH: Okay. So there you have it. There's admiration for the teacher. There's understanding why the teacher might fall because everybody liked her. The boys really, in fact, "So many guys at school they actually like, like Ms. Salorio and like in a way like that." Means these girls are hearing the boys say what they'd like to do with the teacher. And you hear the smiles on their faces, these kids are just happy as they can be. There's no sense of tragedy, no sense of dishonor, no sense of crisis, no sense of emergency whatsoever. Just a normal day at school. Teacher happened to get caught is the only difference. Now it may not be that way but it certainly sounds like that. They don't think there's a tragedy that's gone on here. Make of it what you will. You know, I don't have kids. I'm one of the lucky ones.
BREAK TRANSCRIPT
RUSH: This is Jerry in California. You don't want to say where in California?
CALLER: In the mountains of California.
RUSH: You're in the mountains of California.
CALLER: Yeah.
RUSH: Well, that narrows it down a little.
CALLER: Well, I'm calling to tell you that I was seduced when I was 15 years old by an adult female. She was about 24.
RUSH: Hold it. Hold it. Hold it. Jerry, what program are you listening to? What program do you think you're calling?
CALLER: Well, I think I'm calling the Rush Limbaugh that I've been listening to today.
RUSH: Hmm.
CALLER: Is it on tape? Am I listening to one on tape.
RUSH: Oh, no, no. We don't often get people who admit to being seduced when they were 15 on this program that want to talk about it.
CALLER: Oh. (Laughter) Well, it didn't --
RUSH: Obviously, you're responding to the story earlier about the teacher down in Orange, California, who has been arrested for the sexual contact with the two 13-year-olds. So let me get this straight. You were seduced by a 24-year-old woman when you were 15?
CALLER: Yes.
RUSH: Was this woman your teacher?
CALLER: No. But I think that it was a wonderful thing. I have only the sweetest memories of it. I think it made me a better person. At the age of 15, I was preoccupied with the subject of sex, of course, like most kids that age.
RUSH: Dirty little secret, but true.
CALLER: Yeah. And she gently took me by the hand and introduced me to sexual intimacy -- (Microphone feedback) -- very, very grateful to her for it and I don't see her --
RUSH: Wait a minute, she took you by the what?
CALLER: By the hand. (Microphone feedback) introduced me to sex with an older woman. With a woman at all. My first sex with a female.
RUSH: Wait, wait, wait, wait. Was it your first sex?
CALLER: No.
RUSH: But it was your first sex with a female?
CALLER: Yes. Well, as a little boy, you know, little boys -- but no, it was -- (Microphone feedback) I think that she's not dangerous. She's not the kind of person that should be locked up and have a million dollar bail put on her. She's not the person -- she wouldn't be going out --
RUSH: Jerry, Jerry, Jerry, wait a minute. No, no, no, no. Now, wait a second. This happened -- she was teaching these kids. At the very least this is statutory rape. I mean, they're not considered to have the standing and the maturity to consent to this. She's an authority figure and so forth. And at 15, you really didn't either.
CALLER: Well, but I was only --
RUSH: Wait a minute. I mean, how did it make you a better person? You know, Jerry, I think you're confusing fantasy with making you a better person.
CALLER: Well, I was only three years away from going to Vietnam. Now, Vietnam and being able to star in a porn movie, which you can do at the age of 18, it seems like that's an abrupt introduction to being sexually free, and this woman, all she did was -- she didn't force me, she didn't rape me. She offered me --
RUSH: Well, but she seduced you. What did -- I'm going to -- folks, bear with me on this. My curiosity has gotten the best of me. How did she seduce you?
CALLER: Oh, she used innuendo and she allowed -- you know, she crossed her legs so I could see -- (Microphone feedback) She smiled and so I -- you know, it was kind of a mutual attraction. But she let me know --
RUSH: You saw that smile, did you?
CALLER: Oh, yeah. And I saw, you know, she would raise her skirt and adjust her stockings and -- (Microphone feedback). And one thing led to another and she was very sweet and gentle with me and I appreciated it and I knew better how to deal with females after that, and I have always had a fond spot in my heart for her, so I don't know that such -- you know, that these people that are locking them up and, you know, putting a million dollar bail on them, are they afraid that these people -- these women are going to go roaming the streets looking for little boys to grab and --
RUSH: No, now look it. It's what she did. It's what she did. Except she did not go roam the streets. She roamed the classroom. She took advantage. This is against the law.
CALLER: I acknowledge --
RUSH: I'm stunned. Under no circumstances can this be justified. But you know what I'm noticing here? And Jerry, I'm glad you called. Thank you. Do you still know this woman, see this woman, stay in contact with this woman?
CALLER: No. Oh, no I'm not.
RUSH: Why not? Well, if it was so meaningful, why not?
CALLER: Well, she was married and I was 15 and I'm 60 now. That was many years ago.
RUSH: Okay. Is she still alive? Do you know where she is?
CALLER: No, I don't know if she's still alive. I don't know where she is. It was never anything about --
RUSH: Well, did she have an identifying birthmark or anything? We might be able to find her for you.
CALLER: It was never anything about romance or a long-term thing. It was a little play. That's all it was. And we both knew that. I mean, you know, she was married and I was just a kid and --
RUSH: All right. Now, see, here's the, well, I don't know what to call it. This is a trend. Thanks, Jerry, for the phone call. I'll bet you, ladies and gentlemen, that he's not the only guy in this culture that doesn't think this is really that big of deal. Certainly not worth a $1 million bond. We played audio for you, some of the girls that this teacher taught, they're laughing about it. They don't think it's any big deal. And people have wondered why conservatives over the years have been concerned with the fall-off in morality and values, the coarsening of the culture. It's because people get desensitized to this kind of stuff and the definition of right and wrong gets blurred and here's a slippery slope. And where can all of this be targeted, where can this permissiveness and where can this openness actually be fingered or blamed if you'd want to do that? And certainly the permissive among us have been our good friends, the liberals, who don't want any standards, who don't want any guardrails. In fact, I don't know if this is California or not. I'm having a mental block on where. But some state legislators in some state -- you know how already a minor female can get pregnant and go get an abortion without her parents knowing it? These legislators in this state, whatever it is, have now extended that or want to extend that to drug abuse, alcoholism, and a number of things. They want to be able to send them off to drug and alcohol rehab without their parents knowing about it.
So there's been this ongoing effort to take authority figures out of the realm of these young people's lives so that there is no authority figure, so that there are no limits. And if you wonder, folks, if you wonder why the left is so bothered by the election returns from last November about this desire on the part of most Americans to return to values, this is it. This is the exact reason why. Because this has not always gone on, this stuff of teachers, you know. The first we heard about was Mary Kay Letourneau and if that's not a wacko case, I don't know what it is. And then you've got this example in Orange County, California. We've got another one in Houston that just reported a couple of days after we learned of the teacher in Orange, California. This didn't always used to happen. It wasn't common. And when it did, there was universal outrage over it. Now you've got, "Hey, you know what, everybody liked this teacher and it's just sex. What's wrong when people love each other?" You know, taking away all the standards, all the decency from it, and it's been replaced with, hey, love is great whenever you can find it. Who should stand in the way of that? But it's all because there are a bunch of leftists in this country who don't want any judgmentalism aimed at them and the best way for that to happen is to aim no judgment at anybody. And this is why they're afraid of Christians. This is why they're afraid of religious people. Because religious people have standards of decency and morality, and they don't want leftists screwing around with their kids at their schools, telling people that there aren't going to be any standards of morality or judgment because the parents demand that from people who have stewardship over their kids when they're outside the homes, particularly in a school. Or some such thing.
I went to school in a town of 365 souls. There are no secrets kept in a town that size. The vast majority of our teachers (except chem) were old bats.
This whole episode makes me heartsick for our kids. I would go balistic if I thought for one moment that a teacher (I know them all) or another "Townie" was doin' my son. Good God! What is wrong with these women? I'm actually quite pleased that female pedophiles are finally getting air time. Thanks, NOW! Thanks Ms. Steinem! Your dreams of total equality between the sexes are finally coming true!
And this old geezer feels vindicated and justified?
"CALLER: Well, she was MARRIED and I was 15 and I'm 60 now. That was many years ago."
After hearing this today, and now reading it again (I couldn't absorb it all because I was driving) I'm just sickened and saddened all the way around.
In California they can take a student to have an abortion without telling the parents. I'm waiting to see a case where the child was impregnated by a teacher and the crime was covered up by taking the child to have an abortion.
It's probably already happened.
My class was over 560 students, I think we were the largest class to ever graduate from the school system. Since than they have closed down all but a few schools. The area went downhill fast after 1980.
If you had my 10th grade teacher, you'd be the first one.
560 is bigger than our county seat. My class had 19, and was one of the bigger ones.
Neither did the jury with Mary Kay Laturno, what did she get 6 months after getting pregnant from her 14 yr. old Samoan stud? A student of hers.
And get a load of this:
Teacher Molests Student, No Jail Time
There seems to be a double standard when a female teacher molests a male teacher and the kids pick up on it. If the adults don't care why do you think the kids should?
Did we go to the same school?
We must have had the same teacher. That's all I'll say on that subject!
... and who taught them this?
My English teacher sophomore year was a total bleeding heart liberal union thug. So...no, I dont wish that. :)
sarcasm!
Maybe I'm just jealous she never invited me over to her house ...
ahhh, Mrs. Kauten, 10th grade History. She never molested me, but man, how at times I wish she had.
I remember back in high school there was a bit of controversy surrounding one of the government teachers and some of the high school boys. It was later rumored that she was teaching at a law school -- of all things. I know the girlfriends of the boys involved were not happy about the situation.
I'm really ambivalent about this issue.I was emphatuated with my 11th grade english teacher who was probably 22 yrs old. Quite frankly i don't believe a couple of "encounters" would have hurt me one bit.On the other hand you do need standards of behavior that hold male and female teachers equaly resonsible.
I believe Rush was referring to the difficulty in trying to raise kids in this kind of environment.
