Brethren Agree to Revive 'Alternative Service' Draft Programs
By Kevin Eckstrom Religion News Service Leaders of the Church of the Brethren say they will follow through on a request from the Selective Service to have "alternative service" programs in place for conscientious objectors if a draft is reinstated.
As one of the historic "peace churches" that shun military service, Brethren officials were "cautious" after an unannounced visit by a draft official to a church center in Maryland last October. Officials were worried that the visit signaled that a draft may be at hand. In follow-up meetings, draft officials urged the church to dust off long-standing "alternative service" programs that allow conscientious objectors to serve in two-year domestic service projects in lieu of military service.
In a meeting Dec. 10, the church's council voted to "maximize our efforts" on alternative service, as well as help "guide our youth in their choice of nonviolent service."
"We don't want to miss the part of providing resources to our youth that will help them understand and embrace the Brethren peace witness," said Chris Bowman, moderator of the church's 2004 conference.
Selective Service officials have insisted there are no plans to reinstate the draft, and said Alternative Service Director Cassandra Costley stopped by the Brethren Service Center simply because she was in the area.
Dick Flahavan, a spokesman for Selective Service, said officials did their best to convince church leaders there is no draft on the horizon. "We answered every one of their questions and they didn't leave with anything hanging," he said. "What we were telling them was what we tell everyone. The story hasn't varied."
Brethren leaders also agreed to meet in March with other Anabaptist churches that oppose military service. The meeting in Elgin, Ill., will bring together six Brethren and Mennonite groups to discuss "how to prepare for alternative service opportunities."
Er... :-) Something tells me that alcohol played a part in that photo you posted! :-)
ZOT!!!
Just curious, how many of us hit the button?
He can't reply. HotDog in forum
You are being kept around to toy with. :)
Guy can't spell real good.
Think he meant to say:
"I am zot, *POOF*"
This is getting old. NO ONE WANTS A DRAFT.
Soldiers dont want the draft.
The Army leadership dont want the draft.
Our government dont want the draft.
The potential draftee dont want the draft.
BUT!!!! Some hippy scare tacticians in the media sure like to talk about it.
There is no need for a draft as numbers are being met through other means. A conscripted Army is a $hitty Army.
Do you want inexperienced, poorly trained people who do not want to be there and have no initiative, courage or discipline to bear arms? Then instate a draft.
You will NOT send a unit like 1AD to Iraq for 15 months, loose quiet a few people (One brigade had 24 dead and 211 wounded) and maintain retention goals and have no real morale or discipline problems if you used drafted soldiers. The quality of the soldier will take a dive and it is the NCO and junior officer who is fighting this war in Iraq and Afghanistan. While the brass self ingratiates itself in the media there is no need for a Corps HQ in Iraq. Its all small unit fights as was the case when 3ID and Marines rolled through Baghdad or Fallujah. The quality of people DOES matter and we need to let the market run this as we do everywhere else in our nation. Pay these guys more, give bigger bonuses and so on. Its already working. What you want is qualified people who volunteer.

What a horses rectum you are.
You can't even spell "Hot Dog" correctly.
Cutie-pie, when we dog-pile on a ludicrous thread like this, it's for our own amusement (well, be-musement at best /Ned Flanders>).
We often get 3000 posts in less than a day on things like this. (DU gets, what, 3000 posts in a week for the entire site?) It;s no compliment to you, nor is it a sign that you've "tricked" us somehow. It's a sign that we laugh at how pathetic your side of the aisle has become.
Seriously, look at your own post. You take a non-issue like the draft, find (and Soros probably funds) some nutty article that raises the spectre of the possibility of the notion that a chance of it might happen, and you declare it a certainty so that you might show your side is correct.
Anyway, thanks for the grins. And thanks for going so far to the Left that you've lost 15% of both Houses, and the White House over the last 10 years. We TRULY appreciate THAT!
A few. Right from the beginning, this troll was awfully blatant.
How about you join you troll poofter!
Most of us here have served in uniform or are currently serving, have family serving, or are signing up!
Take a long walk off a shorty pier.
I have some calcium conglomerate footwear for you as well!
NO.
We do not need a draft.
The Dems tried to revive it, and lost.
The Dems fear mongered over it.
The DEMS want to reinstate the draft.
