If the man is so offended by things associated with slavery, he should be against the Democratic party being allowed in the Senate, rather then be a member of the previously pro-slavery party.

I am wondering how Sen. Spencer Coggs (D), feels about the
The ICE-T Cop Killer song? http://it.uwp.edu/gangsters/ice-t.cop.killer.html

"Whether the slight was intentional or not, the selection was not appropriate," he wrote, noting that "Dixie" is often associated with slavery."

Well, slavery is often associated with slavery, so he needs to shut up and stop bringing it up.

"The Battle Hymn of the Republic" is one of the most awsome Hymns ever written.

When they played it at the National Cathedral after 9/11 it gave me chills because I knew the man at the helm, BUSH, was a God fearing man, bent on justice...

A similar question: Wagner is often associated with Hitler and the Third Reich, even though Wagner lived way before the existence of the Third Reich. Do we stop listening to or performing Wagner?

Sen. Spencer Coggs (D), who is black, said he was SHOCKED, as were his family and other guests, to hear the strains of the Southern anthem "Dixie" played in the Senate chamber as part of the trilogy, along with "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "All My Trials."

In a related issue, when senator Coggs (D) was buying a bicycle for his son, was SHOCKED to see chains and padlocks being sold at the local Schwinn store. "Ass we all know," said senator Coggs, "That chains and padlocks were used by the slave trade, and I feel that it's terribly insensitive for Schwinn to sell these implements of the slave trade. I believe that the board of directors of Schwinn needs to reevaluate the way they do business."

That nitwit from Milwaukee needs a large bowl of "shut-up" every morning.

I have been insulted and discriminated against by several of the minority folks from Milwaukee in my time. I am fed up with their panty-waisted whining! And, I'll wager, the ghosts of their departed ancestors are fed up with them too!

Senator Coggs? Wasn't a L left out of the spelling? A Coggs (cogs) keeps everything moving smoothly. A Clogg (clog) does things like blocking sewer lines, etc.

I drove by there once on my way to Minneapolis.

I chose to stay the night in Portage.

Abraham Lincoln is supposed to have ordered the playing of Dixie on formal occasions, and saw nothing bad about the song or the tune. The composer was, I believe, a Northerner.

The compaliner should read the column on how blacks can improve themselves and their situation, in today's Wall Street Journal (4 Jan 2005). It is a classic.

No, it is unfortunate that this special country is marred by such unnecessary democrat voices.

As a member of my (Navy) recruit chorus in 1973 I sang a medley that included just a few words of Dixie at 3 or 4 recruit graduations, including my own. The Dixie portion was in a minor key and was beautiful. I wouldn't have changed a thing and wouldn't change it now.

As a square dance caller I have used the music "Is it True What They Say About Dixie?" (Phil Harris did one of the great versions of this song.) and "Get Me Back to Dixie" (much less frequently) as well as "Rockabye Your Baby (with a Dixie Melody)" (Jerry Lewis in the 50s) I do a bunch of other music too.

See! That shows my ignorance. When I hear "Dixie" I don't think of slavery, I think of the Duke boys General Lee.

A friend I've known for years is named Dixie. Years ago, before I became the proper gentlemen I am today, (/sarcasm)
I used to whistle or sing that song everytime I saw her.
I truly appreciate that she took it for the joke that it was. I would have been highly embarrased if she clenched her tiny fist and popped me in the eye.

"But I want everyone to feel included. If Sen. Coggs felt offended, I would want to extend my hand in apology."

If groveling will satisfy and it is felt that no one is belittled by bowing down before another then by all means suck it up and get it done so all can get back to reality!

It is hoped then that doing the real work of the Senate and of the House will not be set aside while being suffocated with these outbursts of na na nana na, gotchas!

noting that "Dixie" is often associated with slavery.

Only in the minds of liberals and those easily offended by anything with which they do not agree.
