Deep Water

Read: Psalm 69:13-18

Let not the floodwater overflow me, nor let the deep swallow me up. —Psalm 69:15

Bible In One Year: Genesis 10-11

The builders of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) like to show us their products in mind-boggling situations. High on a mountain crag, where no truck could seemingly go. Or in a swamp so impassable you'd need a hovercraft to negotiate it. We're supposed to think that SUVs are invincible.

That's why I found unintended humor in the disclaimer in a recent ad for a four-wheel-drive SUV. A photo showed the vehicle up to its headlights in water as it forged across a foreboding river. The ad said: "Traversing deep water can cause damage, which voids the vehicle warranty."

Deep water is a problem not only for cars but also for us. As we travel the roadways of life, we often find ourselves surrounded with oceans of grief or crashing waves of broken relationships. We need help.

The writers of the Psalms told of that needed assistance. They said God is "a refuge in times of trouble" (9:9), and that "in the time of trouble He shall . . . set me high upon a rock" (27:5). No disclaimers here. Traversing deep water won't affect our spiritual warranty. God will always be there to guarantee His support.

Are you in deep water? Reach up and grab God's hand of mercy. —Dave Branon

When you're passing through the waters
Of deep sorrow and despair
And you get no help from others,
Just remember, Christ is there. —Elliott

When trouble overtakes you, let God take over.

The Mongols did have their own recorded history , "The Secret History of the Mongols" (see, for example, the adaptation by Paul Kahn). It was meant for members of the various Chinggissid dynasties. Most current adaptations are from the one written by the Yuan Chinese (Kubilai Quan). There was, apparently, a different one done (not yet found) for the Il-Khanate of Persia (Hulegu's appanage). The Secret History traces the Mongols back to their mythical origins, but concentrates on the life of Temuchin, and his son Uggedai. It gives a fascinating insight into the Quan's life, and Mongol society.

The Mongols "borrowed" their written languge from the Uighers, a Turkish tribe they conquered in western Mongolia. Before that they had no written language of their own.

Jamuka was more than Temuchin's friend, he was his Anda, a blood brother, adopted in a ceremony. Their eventual rivalry, and estrangement was caused, in part, according to the Secret Hisory, by Bortei and Temuchin's mother, Houloun; an example of the power and influence wielded by Mongol women (See also Toreghine's regency after Uggedai's death, and Sorghetani Beki's maneuvering to take the Supreme Khanate from the House of Uggedai, and pass it to her son Mongke, son of Temuchin's youngest son, Tolui.

Temuchin's rise brought to his side many of the generals who expanded Mongol power during and after his death, such as Muhuli, Sabotai and Jebe Noyon (the latter two were not Mongol by birth). It also led to the destruction of the Merkits, the Tadijuts, the Tartars, and eventually, the Kerait and Jamuka.

Thank you to all who expressed sympathy, prayers, and other sentiments regarding my maternal uncle's recent passing.

My cousin Rex, himself a Vietnam Vet, wrote to tell me that he visited the Canteen to read your comments; he thanks you as well.

My uncle's obituary:

Alfred V. “Pooch” Emans

MENDON — Alfred V. "Pooch" Emans, 82, of Mendon, died at 4 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, in Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind.

He was born Oct. 9, 1922, in Union Township, Mercer County, the son of the late Harry S. Emans and Luella (Selanders). On Dec. 24, 1946, he married Marilyn J. Coffman. She survives.

Other survivors include:

Sons — Rex (Janet) Emans and Rick (Barb) Emans, both of Mendon

Daughter — Rita Puthoff of Celina

Brother — Stanley (Janet L.) Emans of Mendon

Sisters — Lillian Cleo Moorman of Celina and Patricia Rice of Geneva, Ind.

Six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Daniel C. Puthoff, one brother, Raymond Emans and two sisters, Helen Fern Schlueter and Rhonda Eitzman.

Mr. Emans had worked at Crampton's Cannery and B & F Garage - both of Mendon, was the owner/operator of Emans Construction - Mendon, had worked at the Lima Tank Depot, and was the owner/operator with his son Rick of Emans Pure Oil Union 76 Station - Mendon. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II (1940 -1945), having served in the Pacific Theatre.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at W.H. Dick & Sons Funeral Home, Mendon. The Rev. Glenn Masser will officiate. Burial will be in Mendon Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 - 8 p.m. today and one hour prior to services Tuesday.

--

I'm hoping that I can convince Rex to join us to share more information about my uncle's/his father's WWII service; however, Rex told me tonight that he's having major computer problems and isn't sure how soon he'll have time to get back online. (He said it looks like a new computer will be in his future, but isn't sure how soon that will happen. I'm going to e-mail this to him in the hopes that it's sooner rather than later.)

Good morning Everyone. Good morning/afternoon/evening to our AWESOME military, our Allies, and their families.

We here in the DC/Metro area are in for another nice day, although overcast. However, we have a system heading this way that will drop rain on some of us and possible sleet on others.

I'm starting to get a little nervous with all this warm weather. You know the saying, 'the calm before the storm?' Yup! You got it!

The old Farmers Almanac says, for the Atlantic Corridor, some of the coldest temps will be mid-January, from late Feb until first day of Spring. With significant snowfalls early and late Feb. So, you see we still have a ways to go.

Once again, I show up to over 200 posts. I just keep falling behind more and more.

Well, I might as well try to read some of these posts before I have to dive into work again.

I don't know about the rest of you but one of the things I like about the FReepathon is the neat, funny (and some gross) graphics that the fund raisers post.

So, stick around.....I'll be bock.

Now remember, the Canteen is always open

So, come on in and sit for a while. There's alway plenty of coffee, pancakes, conversation, silliness, and plain old BS.
