Carloads of Muslim New Yorkers, all U.S. citizens, were detained for hours by federal agents after they returned from an Islamic convention held in Toronto over the weekend. A Pace University student said she was asked by a border patrol officer at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge crossing whether the wire in her bra was a weapon. A white Flushing resident said U.S. officials refused to tell her why she was being held for eight hours.
"It's just appalling," said Jean Tassi, 53. "If I didn't have on a head covering, I would have never been stopped."
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection official said agents acted on intelligence that conventioneers may have terrorists in their cars.
"We understand that most of these conferences are legitimate, but it is our duty, it is incumbent on us to verify the identity of everybody entering the U.S. - even citizens," said Kristi Clemens, a Washington spokeswoman. "I understand their frustration."
More than 30 people had attended "Reviving the Islamic Spirit" convention at the Skydome that was billed as a spiritually uplifting event.
"I refuse to be treated like this in my own country," said Miriam Soliman, 20, a Brooklyn-born finance major who said she was interrogated about her underwire bra.
First off, it's BOLO, not BOL. Second, the law forbids me from doing anything, as I have no authority over outbound traffic. Now, Customs and the Border Patrol Agents could do something, but not I.
LOL...part of his job is to keep criminals from fleeing accross the border from this side in hopes of escaping justice...but I get your point. Bad analogy. OK, how about a suspect of the same description, driving the same make and model car, but a CANADIAN citizen suspected of murdering his family and possibly fleeing TO the US?
"If there is a perp heading to the Canadian border why should the CBP not be looking for that person? "
It's not a CBP function, they have no authority to stop anyone leaving.
Don't you think there is a problem here when you have allready identified that person as a citizen ?
You haven't already identified the person as being a citizen and unless the person has prints on file, you can never do that.
Most likely what they are doing is identifying terrorists who have prints in their database.
That WAS a typo.
Tell that to recipients of DUIs who try to get across the border anyway, get stopped for search and get sent right back home.
"OK, how about a suspect of the same description, driving the same make and model car, but a CANADIAN citizen suspected of murdering his family and possibly fleeing TO the US?"
Not a US citizen ? No Problem, you are already checking them out - if one fits the perp, hold him until the Canucks come and clear him.
I would expect the same if I fit the description of someone another country I visit were looking for.
"You haven't already identified the person as being a citizen ..."
But that's what they are saying they did ...
"Tell that to recipients of DUIs who try to get across the border anyway, get stopped for search and get sent right back home."
OUR border people are stoping them ? Why?
But that's what they are saying they did ...
No, this is what they said they did;
OK, OK, I give up.
You still haven't replied to my post (#184) asking you a question.
Perhaps you are incapable of doing so........
Stupid statement - if she left off "even citizens" I would agree, but once you have decided they are citizens you have no further need to identify them.
You have already figured out who they are, and if they are bad citizens you can hold them.
They're not being PROFILED, they just sometimes get caught in random searches. Your driver's license is run and your record, if any, comes up. You're turned back. I've never had that problem (I have no criminal record) but know a few people who have. One of them owns a campground in Ontario. He couldn't get across the border to see how his own cabins were doing (his parents take care of them in the summer, great people, I know them very well) The fact that on several occasions he was noticeably drunk when he tried to get across MIGHT have influenced agents to check him out at first. His belligerence, persistence and record made him rather well known along the border after a while.
You don't sound like a Marine. The only Marine I know who took the side of Muslim terrorists against the United States was arrested the other week.
I took an oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. I work for the people of the United States, not GWB or his worshipers.
Your implication is that you think you are defending the Constitution against President George Bush. You must think you are working for the people who voted for Kerry/Edwards ...
If he or any of other Government employee does something good, then I will praise him. But as the Commander in Chief I hold him responsible for all the goes wrong.
You sound like a phony and a disruptor.
"I've seen Muslims in cars crossing at the Port of Roosville (into Montana) that had Canadian tags that were not even given a cursory inspection while non-muslims had their cars pulled apart."
Can I use your experience in the threads that say the Arabs terrorists are backpacking it in across the Mexican border ? I tried to tell them the northern way would be easier...
Stupid statement - if she left off "even citizens" I would agree, but once you have decided they are citizens you have no further need to identify them. You have already figured out who they are, and if they are bad citizens you can hold them.
I think it's most reasonable to conclude that she meant to say the following:
"You sound like a phony and a disruptor"
AF,
I agree with you----he's a crock!
FAS
"They're not being PROFILED, they just sometimes get caught in random searches. Your driver's license is run and your record, if any, comes up. You're turned back. "
Why would AMERICAN border patrol run checks or care ?
What right do they have to say I cannot leave the country ?
Unless I was wanted here ...
