It seems that in theory, a tsunami could hit anywhere that has a coastline.
I don't even want to think about the death and destruction on the east coast if a tsunami hit during a weekday. Truly a terrorist's dream.
How do you evacuate New York City in a few hours?
Our local paper interviewed a nationally renowned geologist on this matter and it was explained in great detail why this would not happen here.
SOmething about a ridge under the ocean which would prevent the waves from getting that high.
I think a tsunami would probably avoid NYC for fear of getting mugged.
thank god anyone who lives on the great lakes dont have anything to worry about unless your on the water with a boat when a nor-easter hits
That's actually an excellent article; one of the first media article that simply wasn't a mouthpiece for the Canary collapse hypesters...
Is it necessary to excerpt that publication?
Good thing we have geologists. I hadn't realized that there were oceans so close to New York.
The Palestinians will be dancing AGAIN in the streets. Again, why is it that we give these people huge aid packages each and every year?
A big wall in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean might work. We could raise it when that Canary Island volcano blows and half the island falls into the sea. On the other hand, blowing the island in half by stages might work, too, but the inhabitants might disagree.
"Using that analogy, you would need a rupture or some material that is on the order of 1,000 miles to displace that much water to generate enough energy to go across the Atlantic," Ms. Kong said. "A 200-square-mile chunk of land couldn't displace enough water."
That was my first thought when I first heard of the Canary Islands thingy
Given how much more tectonically active the Pacific is, I'd think we ought to make sure the west coast is protected first... but maybe it already is.
We could also be hit by a meteor.
My solution is to permanently "station" (ok, intern if you will) all of the damn geologists (coincidently putting in their two cents worth right now) on the major coastlines of America.....put their A$$es on the line and they might sing a different tune.
Mother Nature is Mother Nature --she's not liberal or conservative and doesn't give a damn --things get sorted out in the end.
Duh.
very true and we should just wire the worlds oceans. (why cant we just recycle the military's system which had the whole oceans wired for sound?)
HOWEVER all this panic reminds me of the old SCTV skit with John Candy playing a scientist for the national enquirer say "uh, yeah sure, its uh possible. Yes I am a scientist".
Can you imagine the goo that would wash out of New York if this were to happen? After all, when it rains New York makes its own gravy!
Could this recent tsunami, cenered on the most populous islamic country, be God's work.
Or is this a coincidence?
The devastation will happen regardless of the warning. Many lives would be saved by enabling people to seek "high ground", in the case of NYC, upper floors of larger, stable buildings. Just clearing the subways would save tens to hundreds of thousands.
Wow, man discovers fire. And I thought tsunamis only hit foreign countries, and Alaska.
