Trees to be grown on Mars

A new project from Nasa and three Mexican universities will grow trees on Mars.

The Earth Formation in Mars Project will plant a special type of tree on the red planet that grows on the highest mountain of Mexico, Orizaba Peak.

Nacional Autonoma University of Mexico, Veracruzana University, Veracruz University and Nasa have been researching the trees for years.

Because of the high places they grow - with little oxygen and extreme cold - they are thought to be ideal for the project.

Researcher Luiz Cruz Kuri told Clarin newspaper: "Orizaba Peak has the highest line of trees in the world. We can take then to Mars."

you know in about 7900000 years there might be enough oxygen on the planet to support humans :)

It will be interesting to see how the export of life from one planet to another goes. It's probably a good idea to practice this on Mars first before we find an inhabited planet and have to deal with the complexities of integrating terrestrial life in a xenoecosystem.

"with little oxygen "

I thought trees need carbon dioxide for their metabolism?

How will these trees get water? Something else bothers me too. When Kudzoo was brought to America it almost took over the forrests! When you put something in a different environment, you never know the consequences. It could be beneficial or they could turn into horrible alien swamp things that attack us and suck our brains out!!! ;)

Are the environmentalists going to sit still for us introducing "non-indigenous species" into Mar's pristine ecosystem?

So NASA provides the trees and research and the Mexican universities supplies the gardeners to water them? : )

Relocate the UN to Mars. Within 2 weeks of touchdown they'll be enough hot air to build a couple of whorehouses & a bank within walking distance.

Maybe we can send a SH*TLOAD of LIBTURDS there to speed things up. If Klintoon goes, you KNOW there'd be a whorehouse WAYYYYYYYYY before schools, hospitals, etc.

I thought trees need carbon dioxide for their metabolism?

A plant is nature's battery. During the day, they use the energy from sunlight to combine carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and oxygen is a byproduct. They burn the carbohydrates with oxygen to produce the energy they need, but in sunlight they produce more than they consume. At night they use oxygen and produce carbon dioxide.
