Now I'm not saying there is a connection, but History Channel is showing a special on Biblical Disasters right now and an 8.5 earthquake is a biggun...

Cue Twilight Zone theme....

Lokibob, the full moon is on the 26th of December. Although technically, the quake occurred in local time on the 26th, it's still not a full moon today.

Very interesting. Off hand, from the map, the shift seems westward. Your thoughts?

Massive earthquake hits Aceh, tremor felt in Bangkok

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) - "A massive earthquake on Sunday rocked Indonesia's northernmost province of Aceh, causing dozens of buildings to collapse, news reports and a seismologist said.

Initial reports said the 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck at 07.59 local time (0059 GMT) about 160 kilometers below ground, said seismologist Fauzi at the Meteorogical and Geophysics Agency in Jakarta.

Fauzi, who goes by one name, wasn't sure of the location of the quake's epicenter.

However, the U.S. Geological Survey's Web site recorded a magnitude 8.1 earthquake off the west coast of Northern Sumatra, 1,620 kilometers (1,000 miles) northwest of Jakarta.

It was centered 40 kilometers (25 miles) below the seabed, the U.S. Geological Survey's Web site reported.

State-run news agency Antara said several buildings in the Aceh provincial capital, Banda Aceh, were lightly damaged and that thousands of people fled their homes when the quake struck.

Indonesia, a country of 17,000 islands, is prone to seismic upheaval because of its location on the margins of tectonic plates that make up the so-called the "Ring of Fire'' around the Pacific Ocean basin.

The quake was felt as far away as the Thai capital, Bangkok." - AP

Interesting that we aren't getting any other news reports. I cannot recollect a bigger earthquake recently - certainly this year.

That entire area has several tectonic plates that come together and subduct under one another. That's why there are many active (Krakatoa) and inactive volcanoes in that general viscinity. VERY seismicly active.

Since a 2.7 "micro" earthquake has just now been reported as having occurred on the island of Hawaii, Hawaii, it's hard to tell.

Earthquake generated tsunami result from changes in the shape of the seafloor.

The precise orientation of the fault and the direction of movement determines how much of an area of the seafloor moves how far. Magnitude of the quake is only a very rough guide as to whether a tsunami is generated.

Aceh is a pretty obscure corner of the world well away from where any international media would be in Indonesia (Jakarta).
