Ahhhh.
Have usually spent most of my time visiting western friends in Chiang Mai. And checking in on the tribal weavings.

You are quite likely right again.
Prayers for mother most welcome. The itching problem has driven all of us to distractions. She's on Prednizone now and that's not too helpful on the itching but makes her stronger--some walking again after being too weak for months--and makes her crazier. Interestingly aspirin seems to mellow her out.
Wheeeee. Not the sort of . . . time, life, I'd recommend for favorite recreation. But, evidently God sees fit to assign it as school.
His Peace and Joy to you and yours.

To: oceanperch; Strategerist
"strat" was basically correct. The seafloor changes location - it is displaced from where it was. The displacement can be compressional, tensional, or lateral (or a combination of lateral and another motion).
In this case, the seafloor on part of the fault-zone that moved, was raised as much as 10 meters. Think of what might happen if the bottom of a swimming pool was suddenly thrust up 10 inches - there would be a big wave of water spilling out over the edges. Now think of that on an oceanic scale with a few ten of thousands of square miles of ocean floor being thrust up as much a 35 feet.

I'm not sure - I don't get the e-mails. Do they use a symbol of some sort? (Such as Ml or Ms?)

Great explanation of P-waves and S-waves, Capitan.

Thanks much. Have wondered about whether the sea floor was raised or lowered 20 feet or so.

Just checked my email.
They just use M for magnitude. I suspect it's the ?moment? measure.
Anyone else know for sure what the USGS uses in their email list?
