Depending on a lot of factors, imho,

Sumatra should have protected the Western Thai coast SOMEWHAT.

But I don't think that takes into account anything other than the original site of the original 8.5 quake.

And, I don't know about the reverberations of waves back and forth across the Bay of Bengal.

Yeah, its funny, all these guys want God to wipe out some innocent muslim villager, yet they know little about geography, Sri Lanka and India is mainly Hindi, Thailand is mainly Buddhist. The tourists that were hit the hardest were mostly Christian.

But they want to claim God as their own destructor in these cases and are oddly silent when a hurricane hits Florida or Central America.

Honestly I think it is all part of God's plan. For good or for bad, it happens....

Caps or no caps,

It doesn't appear that you've understood a thing I've written.

For some reason, I had to switch from FIREFOX to IE to see it!

That's curious. I use Firefox and it loads every time I reload that part of the thread.

Disasters happen in every corner of the globe, affecting people of all faiths.

The arrogance of some Christians that want to claim that a disaster is proof of their God showing His anger is about as far flung from the tenents of their religion as you can get.

But, religion makes people do silly things.

Just heard on CNN that Phi Phi island got hit bad, as I feared it would. I worry about the ferry boats between Phi Phi and Phuket and Krabi, several hundreds of people on those boats...

The USGS has made a revised report of magnitude = 8.9

That's a fairly substantial earthquake.

Yep. I've often wondered if its His way of 'population control'.

Thanks Quix.

Hey expat, you still around, or did you lose your connection? I was looking forward to your first hand accounts.

If I find the research--a very low priority--I'll post it on the PROPHETIC SIGNS OF END TIMES thread.

The morality issues correlated were pretty standard fare that every culture would easily agree with. Basic values are not that different the world over.

Very few cultures have families loving the neighboring family if the neighboring family is theiving, raping and murdering and the like.

Sounds like a full-scale subductive event.

It is unfortunate that some will say it is part of God's wrath or something like that.

I am a Calvinist and I believe in a very active God. Not even a sparrow falls apart from his will. But, to say God is punishing the poor people over there is sick.

Yes it is. One of the largest in recorded history.

When they get that big, you've got to be careful what they are attempting to measure. The old Richter magnitude was basically a measurement of the largest amplitude of shaking. New methods attempt to quantify the amount of energy released during the quake. They factor in both amplitude of shaking and duration of shaking.

As more data is recorded and collated worldwide, I expect the magnitude figure to dance around a little bit.

WOW.

Isn't each 0.1 greater = 10 X the energy?

I almost got hit by 2 hurricanes (Typhoons) last month, one was bearing down on Koh Samui and turned, I was there for the after effects, and another was bearing down on Taipei when I landed there. The typhoons hit parts of the Phillipines and killed about 700 people, another terrible disaster.

As for the hurricanes in the US, I pray for the victims, I live in a mostly hurricane free area of the desert, and have not done as extensive travel in the US hurricane alley as I have in Thailand and SE Asia. This disaster is a bit more personal to me, its a place I would like to go live upon my retirement.

There's also the issue of the whole planet increasing massively in it's hostility to God's values etc. at different eras. We seem pretty well headed that direction now.
