Prior to the large eruption of Toba 73,000 years ago the previous large eruptions of Toba were 300,000-400,000 years apart, so I'd say there's not much to worry about.

Also, there really doesn't seem to be much of a correlation between large quakes on subduction zones and eruptions in the nearest subduction volcanic arc.

I'd assume the tsunami is on the Southern Coast of Sumatra and the series of Islands offshore.

Like I said, a really off the beaten path, impoverished area.

But, it's a bunch o'Moooslems so I guess I'm supposed to be dancing a jig over it. Having a hard time doing so.

I've quickly done some research on Indian-Ocean Wide tsunami and it appears there really isn't much...seems they don't propagate well.

We'll know in the next couple of hours if any tsunami hit India or Sri Lanka I guess.

People this is bad very very bad.

People are being kept out of tall buildings here in Kuala Lumpur with some being evaquated.

Like I said, I have never heard of an earthquake here. No one has.

Thanks for the research, but with this much shaking THAT close to a BIG hole in the ground bears some watching IMO.

Also, there really doesn't seem to be much of a correlation between large quakes on subduction zones and eruptions in the nearest subduction volcanic arc.

Which doesn't really seem to make much sense, but I'll take your word on it, for the time being.

There's nowhere on earth where 8.5s are a routine occurance.....

But there was an estimated Mag 9 quake off Sumatra in 1833, and a Mag 8.5 off Sumatra in 1861, so they do happen there; it's tough to guestimate magnitudes before 1900.

Phuket? Sri Lanka? Eeesh.

Looks like there is an Indian Ocean wide wave.

Now you have to worry about Diego Garcia.....

Im on the phone talking to my friend in Phuket right now.

The entire south is hit by tidal waves. Lot of people missing and dead. All of the area is flooded now with lot of damage by the beach area.

This is a terrible thing to say -- but since those islands have become sooooooo Islamic how appropriate for a wakeup call on Christmas Day --

That is like saying that the church that was wiped out down south on Easter Sunday was a wake up call. Do you really want to play that game?

It's killing a heck of a lot of non-Muslims now due to the tsunami.

And I really am worried about Diego Garcia (US military base, max elevation 22 feet, average height of the island above sea level 4 feet.)

If it gets hit I wonder if Quix and his ilk will be bragging about the effects of their prayers......

Hope nobody really prays for this kind of thing.
