Dr. Cyril Wecht, the Allegheny County coroner, is as brilliant as he is bombastic. And he is very brilliant.
I genuinely like him, but sometimes he infuriates all of us. His dismissive comments about Christians a few days ago border on religious bigotry. He disagrees.
Wecht had been hired by the defense as a consultant in the Scott Peterson murder trial. He did his own autopsy on Laci Peterson and her unborn son, Connor.
Peterson, as stone cold a murderer as there is, killed his pregnant wife and dumped the body in the San Francisco Bay, while having an affair, without remorse, with another woman.
The jury determined the former manure salesman deserved the death penalty. Given the California judicial system, however, it probably means he will die of old age before being strapped in the gurney so Mr. Needle can say "goodbye."
Wecht simply could not let sleeping dogs lie, even from 3,000 miles away. He was furious.

***Cyril Wecht Alert!!!***
Hey Cyril... which finger am I holding upright?
Actually, it had no affect on me at all. What a looney.
This guy is a legend in his own mind.
I do not know whether Peterson did the murder. I think that the odds are that he did. Trouble is with today, is that it is feelings, feelings and more feelings- according to the jury.Part of their rationale was that he acted in a cold way following the dissapearance of his wife. Had Peterson acted like a third rate actor in a second rate Victorian stage drama, he might have walked. Merry Christmas all- including Cyril.
Actually, for a democrat lawyer and medical doctor he is. He is recognized as one the finest forensic pathologists and coroners in the country.
He has actually come down on 'our' (in some high profile political deaths) side more often than not. I totally disagree with him on this issue. Perhaps he's got some personal stake in it that we don't know about, but he is still wrong.
Willie, I've often enjoyed Wecht's thoughts, but in this instance it was self-destructo overdrive.
A more productive offering would have seen something revealed that raised doubts. The absense of 'that something' would lead me to think now more than ever that Scott is indeed guilty.
If even his own team have nothing more than guilt-complexes to cast around, bon voyage Scottie.
No, just another anti-Christian bigot. His quotes are in parallel to the equally anti Christian ACLU.
Wecht gets a lot of "face time" on the various cable shows and I'm sure he thinks it makes him look smart to go after the "superstitious religious" folks. He's not doubt quite capable in his field of forensic medicine, but that doesn't mean he knows the first thing about anything else. But it's like actors and other performers who seem to think they're qualified to comment on international affairs.
As far as Peterson goes, I'm pretty sure he's guilty, but I'm also pretty sure that the prosecution didn't prove it. If Wecht doesn't like the verdict, though, his beef is with Geragos.
The key term is "hired by the defense". The jury was probably too stupid to understand the brilliance of his testimony. He knew, by looking in their eyes, that they were Christians, and probably deficient in some other ways also.
He told them, "Don't you know who I am"? I are Cyril Wecht, MD,JD, dissector of the stars and the poor jurors did not show enuff respect. The ignominy.
I like Cyril too. He may be the only establishment person to expressed suspicion of the Vince Foster investigation.
No doubt, he is an arrogant jerk but he was bold enough to come out against the verdicts in the JFK, Vince Foster, and Ron Brown cases so while I have some problems with him he's not totally useless.
Dmitri on his radio show sarcastically calls Wecht the greatest coroner in the history of the planet Earth.
Well that's definitely a possibility...
Afterall, how many OTHER coroners can you name off the top of your head?
Jack Klugman (Quincy) is the only other one that I can think of... and actually, he was a medical examiner, not a coroner.
I guess what it boils down to is that ol' Cyril really doesn't have much competition for that honor!
