Abbas marks end of 40 days of mourning:
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
Marking the end of mourning for Yasser Arafat, his emerging successor said Tuesday that he remains committed to a peace deal with Israel that would produce a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as a capital.
Mahmoud Abbas spoke at Arafat's old headquarters, to which the Palestinian leader had been confined for nearly three years, until just days before his November 11 death at a Paris hospital. Tuesday marked the end of 40 days of mourning for Arafat.
Abbas, the PLO chief, is the front-runner in the January 9 elections to replace Arafat as Palestinian Authority president, which would seal his status as Arafat's successor.
"We are standing here today to reiterate to the world that we are committed to the choice of just peace, to achieve the rights of our people," Abbas said.
Referring to Arafat, Abbas said: "We will continue the struggle to make your dream and our dream come true and to have a Palestinian child raise the Palestinian flag on the walls of Jerusalem, the capital of our independent Palestinian state."
Abbas said he would follow Arafat's legacy, as outlined in a speech by the late Palestinian leader in the summer. In that speech, Arafat acknowledged he had made mistakes in running the Palestinian Authority and promised government reform.
Pledging that "nobody will be above the law," Abbas said the Palestinians are moving toward democracy.
Abbas and Arafat often fought bitterly, with Arafat blocking government and security reform, and the disagreements prompted Abbas to resign as prime minister in 2003. However, Abbas has been careful not to criticize Arafat's legacy, in part because he wants to harness his enduring popularity during the election campaign.
-There has never been a Palestinian state / kingdom / capital / king. -The name Palestine was given to Eretz Yisrael by the Romans. -Palestine is Jordan. 70% of Jordanians are Palestinians. -The name Jerusalem (in Arabic Al-Kuds) is not mentioned in the Kuran even once. -Jerusalem has never been declared even once in its 3200 years of history as a cpital of any nation / poeple, except of the Jewish poeple.
Jerusalem (in Hebrew Yerushalaim), the place where so many Jews were only dreaming to reach for the last 2000 years.
Jerusalem, the place where the Temples, the spiritual home of God were built.
Jerusalem, the place where God has chosen to place his name.
Israel became a nation-state in 1312 B.C, 2,000 years before the rise of Islam, and was a nation before that. Jerusalem became the capital of Israel in 1200 B.C.
Jerusalem a Palestinian capital?!?!?! N E E E E E E E E E E V E R!!! ------------------------------------------- ----PLO executive committee member Zahir Muhsein on March 31, 1977:
Quote: "The Palestinian people does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct 'Palestinian people' to oppose Zionism." End of Quote.
Jerusalem NEVER was and will NEVER be a palestinian or arab capital Ping!
Never. Creating a false "state" of Palestine is bad enough. Making a holy city like Jerusalem the capital of this fabricated terrorrist Islamofascist "nation" is sacrilige and totally wrong. I can't even begin to say what I think of this idea.
We know the reason (Islam), but the delusion of these people is like "The Blob"...everytime you look at it, it has grown larger.
I'm not sure if the PLO learned from the democrats or the democrats learned from the PLO, but neither has any connection to reality these days.
You're right. There isn't one reason why the Palestinians want Jerusalem other than the fact that Israel has a valid claim to it.
Barak was about to hand the Palestinians a small portion of it. I thought he was crazy then, and I'd think any other Prime Minister were crazy if they even thought of doing the same thing.
As time goes buy, Isreal needs to adopt a new policy with regard to peace. I would offer less and less incentives. I would start taking things off the table. Jerusalem? Forget it. Right of return? Forget it. These things have been offered and refused. I'd quit offering them and instead propose peace or utter destruction.
Jerusalem will never be a "Palestinian" city, much less the Capital. However, such talk will not end until the Arabs end their occupation of Israel.
Good post. Great Profile page.
The more things change the more they stay the same.
What part of this not happening doesn't Abbas understand. If peace is ever going to be a reality, the PLO needs to compromise this issue.
The Arabs will never occupy Israel.
I think that the Jewish poeple have passed in their 4000 years of history much worser enemies (who wished the Jews death) than the current Muslims/ Palestinians/ Arabs.
All of those enemies failed, and their nations/ empires died, while the Jewish poeple survived.
Israel, the Jewish nation, will continue to exist long after those current enemies are gone.
Jerusalem, the capital of our independent Palestinian state."
Oh I'm sorry, that city is already being used. Please feel free to pick another.
No extra charge
Amen. (You might have misinterpreted my previous post.)
The Arabs will never occupy Israel
As I've said before I know some Palestinians. And have told them (a number of times) Israel has NUKES (blank stare) if the Israelis think they are going to be conquered they will take everybody down with them. When they say "Never Again" they mean it. I recall reading that during the 73 war Israel was taking their nukes out of storage and getting ready to use them.
And with those poeple, the lefties want to make peace????
With a bunch of million stone aged Arabs who believe that Israel's place is at sea?
With those who even dare to claim Jerusalem as their capital and to try and take it from us?
This resent speech of Abbas pissed almost every single Israeli that I know and that I dont know.
It proved that peace with them (with both Arabs and Palestinians) is impossible and proved that we will have to continue and fight for our existemnt for another, uhm 10/ 50/ 100/ 2000/ 4000 years?
Well, we sure have a world record of expirirence in survival!
Where do these SOBs get the idea that they have a claim over Jerusalem?
Good question!
The answer is written in my first comment of this topic.
But why should they? Its better to hate the Jews and get popularity amoung the UNAI (United Nations Against Israel).
Moving the Jihad to Jordan as the PLO tried to do already in the past, wont bring them popularity nor a success, because after all, if they kill Jews, no one cares, but if they kill their own Muslims, all the world will scream.
And I am not sure whether its a sarcasm or a sad reality.
