there are several ways but all of them costly. Everyone of the possibilities requires US personnel both military and civilian. To use indigenous personnel is asking for trouble. I am sure that the background checks for the indigenous personnel does not go deep enough. Secondly a huge radius for a kill zone if they don't have one would be nice. Vigilance is always the key and when someone is pacing off a compound you can almost rest assure that an attack is pending.

The Brigade Support Battallion of the 1-25th Stryker Brigade is based at Marez along with other units.

Some of the Stryker Force is in Mosul- they're scattered in various places. When my son was in Mosul last year- his division was all over the place in that area.

I thank your daughter for her service- Godspeed. You hang in there Mom- I know what you're experiencing- take it a day at a time.

Yes, it's what I feared.

A terrorist detonating himself.

I wonder, how will CNN/CBS and the NY Times make this into Rumsfelds' fault?

Should he have personally known about this and put a force field around all mess halls?

Obviously he’s a bad SECDEF, he should be replaced immediately! (sarcasm)

Again, these reports are based on first reports, which are always sketchy, so take what I write with a bottle of salt.

This sounds like light artillery or heavy mortars, with a forward observer inside the base who knew when lunchtime would be. When troops go into garrison, even in a forward base like Mosul, they adopt routines that can play into the hands of the other side.

There will be several more days like this until the January 30th elections change all of this and bring a legitimate government to pass in Iraq. Warfare, after all, is a series of catastrophes that result in victory for one side or the other. We simply have to make sure that it is us. That doesn't make this reality any less painful, but it is the reality of where we are at as a nation.

Like it or not, the bad guys had a good day today. We have to acknowledge that, mourn our dead, and move forward, because in the end, if we get even something close to a democracy in Iraq, it is game over for the fascists.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

I have a buddy over there doing some training of nationals in a camp on the outskirts of Mosul, hopefully not the camp that was just hit.

I just sent him an email asking about his status. Prayers up.

He states some of the biggest problems are that...
1. In many cases you can't tell friendlies from the enemy.

2. The camp is constantly getting shelled, mortared, and the like. The terrorists are bound to get 'lucky' from time to time.

"Rockets can be fired many miles away. No need for an 'inside' job."

I was replying to a post about a possible 'lucky first hit' mortar attack, before all the details were known.

I think that is the operative word in the above paragraph.

This has all the hallmarks of something that would be carried out by the group formerly known as Ansar al-Islam.

Or Hezbollah.

Ansar al-Sunna claims attack on US base in Mosul: website

DUBAI (AFP) - The Al-Qaeda linked Army of Ansar al-Sunna group claimed responsibility for an attack against a US military base in the Iraqi city of Mosul, which reportedly killed at least 22 people, in a statement attributed to it on an Islamist website.

"One of the mujahedeen of the Army of Ansar al-Sunna carried out a martyrdom-seeking (suicide) operation in a restaurant of the infidel occupation forces at the Ghazlani camp in Mosul," said the statement, whose authenticity could not be independently confirmed on Tuesday.

US media, citing Pentagon officials, said at least 22 people were killed and more than 50 injured in a lunchtime blast at the base in Mosul, the largest city in northern Iraq.

Fox News reported that three rockets slammed into a dining hall on the base.

Hey, I'll soon hit 2 years in theater. Can it really be that long since you were giving me hints on what to take? Wow...

Seen a thing or two. Heard a few things, stories that, well, we just won't repeat here.

And I'll have something for you yet, I promise!!

Must have been a security lapse somewhere, or an 'inside job' maybe. Very demoralizing to have a mess hall attacked.

It appears the mess hall coordinates was zeroed. A base worker watches for congregating Americans at usual times. Then the infiltrator notes the exact target coordinates for the enemy gunners. The Enemy picks a day at their leisure to blast the target. Very easy to do.

You can be sure that Bush will get more blame than Rummy.

BTW, I don't fault Bush for going to war with Iraq. We had plenty of justification, even without WMD's and Saddam needed taken out. I also understand that we can't just attack a country and walk away to leave it in physical and political turmoil (or can we?).

BUT, I'm sure getting tired of seeing our soldiers die for a people that will hate us (infidels) no matter how this war turns out. I guess I'm just not as compassionate as Bush, because I don't feel compelled to save these folks.

I ain't offering solutions here. I'm just frustrated and ranting.

"There will be several more days like this until the January 30th elections change all of this and bring a legitimate government to pass in Iraq."

Why does everyone from the President on down believe that these attacks will magically stop after January 30th? Do we actually believe that the insurgents will stop fighting because of an election? Let's review all of the previous goalposts, the post invasion phase, end of major conflict, "NEGOTIATIONS" with Al Sadr (who is unbelievably on the Jan 30 ballot), Bremer pre-dawn swap-out, and lastly Fallujah. Attacks increased after all of these goal posts so why does our government believe that once we reach 30 January the insurgents will fade away?
