ITHACA, N.Y. A nationwide poll finds nearly half of all Americans believe the U-S government should restrict the civil liberties of Muslim Americans.
The survey -- conducted this fall by Cornell University -- found that 44 percent favored at least some restrictions, while 48 percent said civil liberties shouldn't be restricted in any way.
Twenty-seven percent of the 715 respondents supported requiring all Muslim-Americans to register where they lived -- and 29 percent thought agents should infiltrate Muslim civic and volunteer groups.
The poll also found Republicans and people who described themselves as highly religious were more likely to support curtailing Muslims' civil liberties than Democrats or people who are less religious.
The executive director of the Muslim American Society says the news is disturbing, but not surprising.
Ok, but my point was that they WERE allowed to sing in the school auditorium, but these SAME kids who sang these same songs were not allowed to sing them to American veterans. Why? It was not the content of the songs, or even that they were singing the songs. They were forbidden to go to the American Legion. I don't know what particular nationality they hailed from, maybe some muslims are more hostile to the American military than others who hale from a different part of the world.
Anecdotal in the extreme. That in no way can be extrapolated onto a larger scale.
Are you a Brit?
Did they go to a Mosque to conduct the poll?
The Reformation is what cleaned us up. We need a Muslim Martin Luther willing to stand up and nail 95 theses to the wall of the Grand Mosque and create a "protestant" version of Islam. Before the Reformation we were pretty creepy. Since 2004 in the Christian calendar is the year 1425 in the Muslim calendar, they are ripe for reform, as Martin Luther nailed his theses to the door of Wittenberg cathedral in 1517. I just hope we don't have to wait 92 more years.
I suspect that the school event happened before the parents found out what was really going on, then the "you know what" hit the fan! No doubt intemperate language was used at home. You got a mere echo.
One of my sons had a bunch of Moslem kids in his gym class. Ordinarily his team (he was their leader) could beat any other team at any sort of team sport you can name EXCEPT when there was a girl on the other team.
When that happened my son lost most of his team mates because they refused to play in a contest against girls.
These guys are funny that way ~ more like your great grandparents than modern Americans for the most part.
Sobering comment. There's an awful lot of fiddling going on while Rome burns...
Well truth to tell, it's not like we are required by the fabric of the universe to craft each policy statement to withstand any and every assault from whatever outhouse attorney that chooses to dispute it.
If a law abiding citizen has to convince the local police he's safe to own a class III firearm, I see no reason why a practitioner of a class III religion should not do the same. And like it or not, it is a precedent relating a Bill of Rights article to emergent situations.
"Anecdotal in the extreme. That in no way can be extrapolated onto a larger scale."
Never suggested that it could be extrapolated. And it shouldn't be. Someone provided an anecdote of a negative experience, so I provided one. I'm just saying, there are some good ones out there, that's all. And some of them are helping-and others are more likely to listen to them. I also consider some friends, even if we don't share the same religion, and those friends do not mean any non-Muslims harme. That is why I am reacting to comments about ALL Muslims. However, my arguemnts against policies such as deportation and internment are based on our national security and strategic interests. I believe they would hurt, rather than help. As someone else pointed out, such policies are not being seriously considered in Washington, so I guess I'm wasting my time...thank God they are not, because they would not be sound policies, and God bless America and the values that make us great.
Like NO ONE interprets that as support for the old regime!
This has been an interesting thread to watch. Just to get an idea from where you're coming, with which religion are you a member? If you're not currently practicing, what was your religion during your childhood?
In the spirit of sharing, I am a non-practicing Episcopalian.

Here's a portion of a 'sermon' preached by an imam at the mosque in Lakemba, Sydney, which appeared on the website but has since been removed.
This might help explain what the clerics tell the followers of islam about living in the West...
'The likeness of Islam and Kuffar is like that of fresh clear spring water and water brought up from the bottom of a suburban sewer. If even a drop of the filthy water enters the clear water, the clarity diminishes. Likewise it only takes a drop of the filth of disbelief to contaminate Islam in the West.'
While this rubbish is being shouted by the imams there's no way the islamic community is going to assimmilate. Not anywhere on earth.
You need to read the whole thing. The Vatican is not at war with us. Israel is not at war with us. Utah is not at war with us.
7th day Adventists? They're good-hearted, kooky cultists...not at war with us.
When I was younger, my family and I went between a place called the Church of Religious Science and my uncle's Presbyterian church, were he was the minister. Hard to say what demonination the Church of Religious Science was, if it had any, so I suppose I would say that I am a non-practicing Presbyterian.
"I think our government is capable of tracking beople based on their actions, not their religion."
For most people religion involves certain actions. In the case of Islam their religion often involves gathering together in places where there is an opportunity to make contact with people who consider the destruction of America their religious duty.
Personally, I hope to God that the U.S. has intelligence agents closely watching every major mosque in the U.S. If the CIA, FBI is too politically correct to do it then maybe Israel can send some Mossad agents over here to watch the Mosques for us.
"....and 29 percent thought agents should infiltrate Muslim civic and volunteer groups."
I will be extremely pissed-off if they aren't doing this. This is the sort of thing my taxes should be used for.
bump! bump! bump!
Not to make fun but...HeeHee...Christianity encourges analysis...in Islam, criticism is blasphemy...punishment...death....
But Islam isn't a cult...right......
