Poll: Nearly half of all Americans support restricting rights of Muslim-Americans

ITHACA, N.Y. A nationwide poll finds nearly half of all Americans believe the U-S government should restrict the civil liberties of Muslim Americans.

The survey -- conducted this fall by Cornell University -- found that 44 percent favored at least some restrictions, while 48 percent said civil liberties shouldn't be restricted in any way.

Twenty-seven percent of the 715 respondents supported requiring all Muslim-Americans to register where they lived -- and 29 percent thought agents should infiltrate Muslim civic and volunteer groups.

The poll also found Republicans and people who described themselves as highly religious were more likely to support curtailing Muslims' civil liberties than Democrats or people who are less religious.

The executive director of the Muslim American Society says the news is disturbing, but not surprising.

Time for a conversion. That's what disturbs him ~ he just found out Christianity is less of a threat to him than Godless, soul-less, atheistic humanism.

That's not what he planned on.

Certainly if people think that it's ok to register guns, then it must certainly be ok to register the people who tend to use them to kill other people in the name of their god.

The survey -- conducted this fall by Cornell University

Okay, the source makes the results automatically suspect.

Let's see a professional organization reproduce those results.

Not suprising at all, since that is exactly what happens in Muslim countries if you are not Muslim. Your "rights", if any, are very limited indeed.

Leave it to the libs to define what "restriction" and "liberty" actually mean, considering they can't grasp what "is" means.

If the civil liberties of Muslim Americans can be restricted, then the civil liberties of Catholics, Jews, Mormons and 7th day Adventists can be restricted. No thanks.

I support the rights of Muslims to be deported and to practice Islam freely in Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Chad, Yemen, & etc.

If not, then I support their right to be departed.

U-S government should restrict the civil liberties of Muslim Americans

Yeah, right! I'm so sure (NOT) that they posed the questions this way.
I notice they don't give the questions and what they are interpreting as the belief that the US government "should restrict the civil liberties of Muslim Americans".

Typical AP BS!

I would be against any special restrictions on a person because of his ethnicity or religion if he is an American citizen. I am sure it would be against the law.

I have Muslim friends and they are perfectly normal. They think Bin Laden is a nut case. Many American Muslims are middle-class professionals who have a good life here and would not risk all their have achieved for this murderer Bin Laden.

I think our government is capable of tracking beople based on their actions, not their religion.

I am religious and usually Republican but I think this is a terrible idea. I would be totally against it.

I agree-----a very slippery slope.

Most of the Muslim problem could be solved by better intelligence and protection of our borders.

Yes, but that would be assuming that ALL Muslims intend to kill others. If this were the case, there would be many more dead Americans out there.

Only because we tell the truth. Those other freaks even lie on surveys for crying out loud.

What are the rights being restricted here? FBI infiltration of anti-american groups that advocate the overthrow of the government was ruled constitutional long ago. As far as registration goes, we already do that on a number of levels.

Silly, you could tell the article was lying propaganda just from the title.

I wouldn't support that at all. Religious freedom is what makes America so great. Restricting someone's rights based on their religion is unconstitutional and un-American.

Good thing we go by the constitution and not public opinion polls.

We are better than that. Equating ourselves with oppressive countries eschews the values that our great country stands for. God bless America.
