ITHACA, N.Y. A nationwide poll finds nearly half of all Americans believe the U-S government should restrict the civil liberties of Muslim Americans.
The survey -- conducted this fall by Cornell University -- found that 44 percent favored at least some restrictions, while 48 percent said civil liberties shouldn't be restricted in any way.
Twenty-seven percent of the 715 respondents supported requiring all Muslim-Americans to register where they lived -- and 29 percent thought agents should infiltrate Muslim civic and volunteer groups.
The poll also found Republicans and people who described themselves as highly religious were more likely to support curtailing Muslims' civil liberties than Democrats or people who are less religious.
The executive director of the Muslim American Society says the news is disturbing, but not surprising.
I'm absolutely amazed that we've been at war to one degree or another in Afghanistan for 3 years now and we still have Freepers who seem to have absolutely no idea of the history of the place (or places).
I think it is...I have always had an eye for it...was born that way..I could be wrong...but I could be right...
Of course, it all depends on how you define a "civil liberty".
This article defines "infiltrating a Muslim group" as a violation of a civil liberty.
Thus, you have a situation where the methods used to obtain "better intelligence" is defined as "you are violating Muslim civil rights".
I have no problem whatsoever with the FBI "infiltrating" any group I or any of my family belong to as long as the FBI agents pay their membership dues on time. We have nothing to hide and anyone is welcome to During the early 1960's, the joke was that half of the membership of the KKK consisted of Government agents.
Why should it be that infiltrating white supremacist hate groups such as the KKK is considered enforcing civil rights while infiltrating Muslim hate groups is considered a violation of civil rights?
Does that "unreconstructed Southern Confederate sympathizers" description also apply to me?
I wanna play but I'm an Australian.
This is very encouraging.
I guess you're invited. LOL!
Studiously avoid anything that would make us think you are jihadis.
How hard is that?
HOW HARD IS THAT?!
Now I'm ROTFLMBO!
Let me clarify: these same kids were allowed to sing these same songs (no 'real' Christmas songs, this was a "winter concert") in the auditorium for two days for two sets of parents, prior to the field trip. Now, admittedly, I got this information from my seven year old, but the teacher did acknowledge that these three children would not be attending the field trip to the American legion. My daughter asked one of the kids why he couldn't go and he said (I paraphrase)'my mother doesn't want me to visit American soldiers because they hurt muslims'. This may just be these particular parents. Perhaps in other classes going on this field trip, there was no problem. I can only speak to what happened in my daughter's class. I think its pretty clear it was the American Legion that stuck in the craw, not the music.
However, when the Mongols conquered most of the civilized world back in the Middle Ages, they frequently adopted the religions of the people they conquered. For instance, Confucianism was quickly adopted by the Mongol rulers of the three Chinese kingdoms, and down in India the Moguls became Moslem!
The fellows who stayed back in Mongolia proper were the dregs of their society. The place is still backwards, folks running yaks, doing subsistance hunting, all that sort of stuff. They are doomed to the fatalism inherent in Buddhism.
The more aggressive sort of folk left there 800 years ago and never turned back!
Yes, of course it makes me happy, since I am most concerned with my country. If one is concerned with the future of one's country, how could it be any other way?
And Merry Christmas to you.
Nope. Suicide bombing was pioneered by the Japanese in WWII, almost all of whom were members of the Shinto religion. Those suicide bombers however were not quite terrorists as they chose to wear a uniform, carry arms openly, and attack only military targets. Today I think they would be called terrorists though as they were intending to cause terror in their intended targets -- just as we call the suicide bombing of the USS Cole a "suicide bombing" and consider it an act of terrorism.
I never mentioned anyone in custody. I was referring to a policy of interning and deporting ALL Muslims as a matter of policy. That after all, is what the poll in question in this thread is about. My apologies if I am mistaken.
"Suicide bombing was pioneered by the Japanese in WWII"
Haha, ok, ok, that is true. I meant in the form in which we see today, but point well taken.
You're from the REALLY DEEP SOUF', of course.
Reciprocal rights with Islamic tourists, workers, and even American Muslim citizens in the USA.
If their Islamic home country bans Christians and Jews from having churches, synogogues, bibles, worship, prayers, religious jewelry, clothing, and/or traditions or practices on penalty of arrest, imprisonment, torture, public beheadings, or expulsion from the country then ALL Muslims in the USA are subject to the same religious and governmental laws in reverse the instant they disembark from any plane, ship, train, vehicle, or sneak walking across the Mexican or Canadian border.
No foolin' Mohammed!
You want religious/official laws like you had back home you've got it!
"Studiously avoid anything that would make us think you are jihadis."
HAHA! Now THAT is sound policy! Well said.
Now you have identified what it is that frightens you the most. Deportation. Reminds me of a discussion I had recently with a muslim. I reminded him that what is GIVEN can also BE TAKEN AWAY!
That sorta spoiled his day.
Depends on how you define "restrict the Civil Liberties of" doesn't it? There are those who would claim that asking for a picture ID at a polling place is restricting the civil liberties of undocumented migrants who may want to vote.
