LAKE COUNTY, Fla. -- A Lake County mom convicted of simple assault after a school bus camera caught her beating a student who had gotten into a fight with her daughter didn't show up for her sentencing Tuesday.

The video, which was recorded in October, shows three girls throwing punches at the back of a school bus as a woman in a white shirt, Rita Gooden, walks back. The camera shows Gooden push her daughter out of the way, then strike another girl, Cassandra Ross. Ross appears to be pinned to a back seat out of view of the camera as the apparent beating continues.Gooden walks off the bus in full view of the camera shouting, "One more time."Ross then walks up to the front of the bus and can be heard telling the driver, "I'm bleeding because of her. Look what she (expletive) did to me."Ross's mother was furious Gooden failed to show up for court."This woman's being charged with simple assault. There's nothing simple about it. She tried to kill my child," she said.Gooden faces up to a year behind bars.

According to the article her side of the story is her daughter was being attacked.

Call me crazy, but I think I would like to hear all of the evidence before I agree to take her kids away and send her to jail for a year.

Even if the facts are accepted, as stated in the article, one year in jail is too much.

1.) You don't know who instigated the fight to start with 2.) Simply pulling you child out of the melee and getting off the bus would have done. 3.) If your child was getting beaten up, you get the perps name and address and bring charges. The main thing is you have no proof for any of the crap you are spouting here!

Once again, how do you know the other girl was beating up on her child? Looks to me like there were two girls beating up on one here and the mother decided to finish for them. Did you read something I didn't here? Is there something in the story that says the girl this woman hit was the instigator of the fight and the one doing the beating? Or was she the one getting beat?

If she was operating on all cylinders, she would have pulled the kids fighting apart. She obviously wasn't, so she deserves to face the wrath of the justice system.

OK, I watched it several times, and what happened is not very PC, but here goes. White girl is sitting alone at the back of bus and is attacked by two black girls. Mammy is somehow on the bus watching, probably egging it on. Mammy then decides little white girl has not been beaten enough, so she jumps in. This bitch needs to be in jail.

I do know this, if a child is brought up with no fear of consequences, it is not going to bode well for him later in life. Spanking= Consequences. Kids that mouth off at home with impunity when they are little are misguided their thinking that because mommy and daddy take their crap the rest of the world will. They will learn how wrong they are in the real world. Raise your kids however you want, but little tantrum kings and queens that may seem cute in their parents eyes are hated by everyone else. All kids that act that way are. If mine act that way or if yours act that way, everyone else will hate them. Fine way to bring up a child, don't you think?

I am not saying she does not deserve to be punished. But to say she deserves a year in jail and to have her kids taken from her, only to become wards of the state seems a tad harsh to me.

Which was the point I was making. I would want to know more about what happened, and why, before I would say that she deserves a year in jail and to have her kids taken from her (as was suggested by one person).

Well - it APPEARS (not being an eye witness) that the woman's daughter was being beat up and nothing was being done about it (where was the bus driver?).

Put yourself in the same position - you meet the bus to find that your child is getting beat up on the bus. Nothing is being done to stop it. What would you do?

Even better - I'm curious if there is a history of such abuse by these students on the bus.
