LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Television host Dick Clark, who suffered a stroke last week, will miss his first New Year's Eve television broadcast from Manhattan's Times Square in more than three decades, his spokesman said on Monday.
The 33rd "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" broadcast will be hosted instead by morning talk show personality and "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" quiz master Regis Philbin, producers of the ABC television special said.
As previously announced, singer Ashlee Simpson will host the West Coast portion of the show.
The 75-year-old Clark, who was hospitalized in Los Angeles last week with what his publicist described as a minor stroke, said then that he hoped to return to work in time to emcee the New Year's broadcast from Times Square.

I just hope this is an asterisk and not the end of an era. God bless Mr. Clark in his recovery!
Saying a prayer for his recovery...
I haven't watched the New Year's Eve count-down in many years. Best wishes to Dick Clark.
I agree. I've watched every single one as far back as I can remember.
Dick Clark is a holdover from an era when rock 'n' roll was simply teenage fun and hijinks (yes, including some backseat action), not morose pseudo-philosopy and crude sexual exploitation.
Oh for pity's sake! She gonna do a bad lipsynch for us on New Year's Eve too?! Sheesh...
My wife always rolls her eyes when I say, "It's time to turn on 'Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve.' " She thinks it's hokey. Call me a sentimentalist, but he's the Guy Lombardo of our generation. :-)
I remember the first time I watched it and getting cheesed that the "Ball" didn't go all the way to the street. I grew up in California where 20 stories is a high rise.
Despite all his setbacks, he's still looking pretty good. :)
I have a video of Guy Lombardo ringing in 1958.
I watch it every year.
Can't wait for 1959.
Expensive rug and a picture in the attic, but a nice guy.
1959 ... the year I was born. "It was a very good year ..."
Wow, this is the first one he's missed since that whole Black Death thing in the 1300s, right? :)

Good one!
Get well soon, Dick, from an old fart who remembers the old "American Bandstand" from Philly... |
NY Eve has not been the same since Guy Lombardo passed on. I used to love watching his show and laughing at all those folks in their silly hats. Plus the "hokey" old music had its appeal. In recent years I have watched Dick Clark and thought he did a good job, though I would change the channel whenever the crappy music segments were on. This year I think Regis will do well.
I second that. I have a difficult time picturing Regis Philbin at the helm.....
Best wishes for a speedy recovery Mr. Clark. God Bless.
