CHICAGO -- Police believe a suspected burglar who escaped police by jumping into the Chicago River may have drowned.

Union Pacific police apparently surprised the burglar as he was breaking into boxcars near 33rd Street and Damen Avenue, according to Deering District Sgt. John Dowd. To escape, the suspect reportedly jumped into the Chicago River and tried to swim to the other side.

The incident occurred at around 1 a.m. Monday.

Officers from the Marine Unit, with help of a U.S. Coast Guard boat, searched for the suspect in the river near Kedzie Avenue until 3:30 a.m. Authorities said the search would be resumed after dawn.

Police said the river is about 125 feet wide where the burglar jumped in, and the air temperature was in the upper 20s at the time.

Anybody who tries to escape by jumping into that filthy water is too stupid to live and breed.

I support this!

From now on, you want to steal, you must escape via swimming in the river in 20 degree weather.

Great idea! I hope to see more of this :)

Reminds of an old joke about "someone stealing more chain that they can swim with".

Will the police bother to pursue this case? At this point, it just seems like water under the bridge.

Won't be easy, as this is the river that flows backward.

"jumping into that filthy water "

Yeah, hard to say which happened first. He either dissolved or went hypothermic. Probably both.
