Can Joe (I'll-say-anything-to-win) LIEberman be trusted?
Silly question.
LIEberman won his Senate seat by outright lying about his abortion position.
Getting elected on the backs of the innocent unborn is not something that would inspire confidence in a position requiring utmost integrity.
If Joey would go to the lengths he did to get the pro-life vote - lying smackdab in the face of pro-lifers, telling them what he knew they wanted to hear - he is surely capable of promising just about anything he thinks people want to hear.
Abortion separates the men from the boys. As a radical pro-abortion advocate who voted six times for partial birth abortions, Joey proved himself to be a pimple-faced adolescent who fools the folks into thinking he's at the library when he's out smoking weed with the rest of the nerds.
Appoint him to HomeLand Secretary?
I wouldn't trust him to walk my dog.
In Sept 2000, The Washington Times reported how Lieberman, a staunch pro-abortion candidate made a pro-life pledge to religious leaders.
EXCERPT: Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman is a staunch supporter of abortion rights now, and even voted (six times) against a ban on partial-birth abortion, but Catholic leaders in Connecticut remember another Joe Lieberman.
He called on the state's archbishop with a pro-life pledge 12 years ago, when he was first a candidate for the U.S. Senate.......(and) met with Archbishop John F. Whealon of Hartford to seek Catholic votes in the final stretch of his 1988 Democratic bid to oust 18-year Sen. Lowell P. Weicker Jr., a Republican who supported abortion rights.....
"Joe was very liberal, like Weicker, but we had a poll on abortion that showed which way the wind was blowing," says Daniel Cosgrove, then the Democratic town chairman in Branford, Mr. Lieberman's hometown.
The poll showed anti-abortion sentiment outweighed pro-choice views in urban areas throughout Connecticut. "In the Waterbury area, it was more than any, 12,000 [more] against," Mr. Cosgrove says.
"He expressed himself against abortion, all suicide, and euthanasia. His position on that definitely was well received by the archbishop and priests" religious leaders said.
In fact, Mr. Lieberman's pro-life assurances were so convincing that Archbishop Whealon arranged for the Democratic candidate to meet with Catholic priests throughout the state shortly before the November 1988 balloting. Mr. Lieberman's expressed pro-life views in those meetings, Father Berry said. "That probably was not insignificant" in the November 1988 election outcome, he said.
Nominate Clint Eastwood as Sec. He can do the PR work and make the announcements. Then he can hire Kerik as his 2nd in command to do the heavy lifting.
Does the Secretary have to have his assistant okayed by the Senate?
Nice deconstruction of the ideal candidate.
But I find it hard to believe only one person ---Franks---exists that fills the bill.
This is an opportunity to nominate someone who is of Presidential caliber in 2008 (Republican, that is).
I like the idea of someone from a military background like a Tommy Franks, though I don't know much about his politics.
I'm a little concerned about the slate of Republican candidates for 2008:
Jeb would be great, but I fear that's just too many Bushes for the public to be able to elect him.
Cheney is too old and frail.
McCain, well, need I say more.
Frist - not exactly Mr. Charisma.
Anybody else - I'm sure there are some good people, but there's not much name recognition out there (granted, it's early).

Which usual trolls would that be? Perhaps Lieberman, his more liberals policies aside, is just a tad too Jewish for certain people's taste? I'm not naming names, I'll just say they would be the usual trolls. ;)
Some would argue that getting the DHS job has greater potential to harm one's chances at becoming president than to help elevate a candidate.
If there's just one terrorist attack, your presidential aspirations disappear. And if there's not, there's still enough hot-button issues the department deals with to seriously harm a potential White House run.

The Secretary of Homeland Security has to spend so much time explaining to the media, his assistants have to do the daily stuff anyway. Why not have someone who knows the business of PR?
Clint Eastwood is an actor who plays tough guys. He got bored and fed up with being the Mayor of Carmel, an office he only ran for to address certain issues specific to the town of Carmel by the Sea. Clint Eastwood likes to make movies and play golf.
Is President Bush intending to appoint Lieberman?
As usual he is extending the olive branch to the WRONG person.
Fair enough point, but I want to see a President who is not afraid to make bold moves to protect our country. And I think if we take those bold measures (heavy border security, as an example), we stand a very good chance of there being no major attack.
That would position the DHS Secy to be a very electable candidate in 2008.
I just don't see President Bush nominating him.
If we're throwing out suggestions, I nominate Frances Townsend. Yes, I know she worked with Reno, but she has been terrific when I've seen her speak and we need a strong personality and Lieberman doesn't possess that quality---Townsend does.
And then there's Clint's "Hang "Em High" .....and "Where Eagles Dare."

As posted above, just one suicide murderer here and he would be demonized during the campaign.
The person for this job must NOT have plans to run for the WH.
How many politicians do you think exist who don't have at least a "secret" desire to run for president?
Not many, in my opinion.
Whoops--posted before adding...I would cross Arpaio off my own list because he supported Janet Napolitano (our current gov---ack) over the Republican, but I wouldn't be able to work up any agitation if he ever got elevated by Bush to some post.
