This is an opportunity to nominate someone who is of Presidential caliber in 2008 (Republican, that is).

I like the idea of someone from a military background like a Tommy Franks, though I don't know much about his politics.
I'm a little concerned about the slate of Republican candidates for 2008:

Jeb would be great, but I fear that's just too many Bushes for the public to be able to elect him.
Cheney is too old and frail.
McCain, well, need I say more.
Frist - not exactly Mr. Charisma.
Anybody else - I'm sure there are some good people, but there's not much name recognition out there (granted, it's early).

Leave Lieberman where he is.

Some would argue that getting the DHS job has greater potential to harm one's chances at becoming president than to help elevate a candidate.

If there's just one terrorist attack, your presidential aspirations disappear. And if there's not, there's still enough hot-button issues the department deals with to seriously harm a potential White House run.

Yes, the Pubbie field for 2008 is shallow at this point.

Allot of names have been tossed around, but they are either 'fringe' or lack political (as in elected) experience.

If she wants it, 2008 is Hillary's on the Dem side. The Pubs need a 'superstar' caliber person in-waiting. Many say Guliani, but I don't see him garnering the more conservative side. Governor Arnold is pushing for an amendment change, but he won't see that happening in his lifetime. McCain, Hagel don't seem to be the types capture enough positive attention. Romney and the Gov of Col might.

The Pubbies need to be lining up some good candidates soon.
