California's Student Bill of Rights Legislation
California Sentate ^ | DECEMBER 6, 2004 | Senator Morrow

Posted on 12/11/2004 11:52:29 PM PST by farmfriend

Senator Morrow has introduced a much-needed Student Bill of Rights into the Senate this year. If we are committed to academic freedom and debate then we should support this bill. Universities all work to obtain diversity except when it comes to conservative ideas and speech. Let's rally behind this bill and see if we can get it passed.

SB 5

...the Trustees of the California State University and the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges are hereby directed to, develop guidelines and implement the following principles of the Student Bill of Rights:

(1) Students shall be graded solely on the basis of their reasoned answers and appropriate knowledge of the subjects and disciplines they study, not on the basis of their political or religious beliefs.

(2) Curricula and reading lists in the humanities and social sciences shall respect the uncertainty and unsettled character of all human knowledge in these areas, and provide students with dissenting sources and viewpoints. While teachers are and should be free to pursue their own findings and perspectives in presenting their views, they should consider and make their students aware of other viewpoints. Academic disciplines should welcome a diversity of approaches to unsettled questions

(3) Exposing students to the spectrum of significant scholarly viewpoints on the subjects examined in their courses is a major responsibility of faculty. Faculty shall not use their courses or their positions for the purpose of political, ideological, religious, or anti-religious indoctrination.

(4) The selection of speakers, allocation of funds for speakers' programs, and other student activities shall observe the principles of academic freedom and promote intellectual pluralism.

(5) An environment conducive to the civil exchange of ideas being an essential component of a free university, the obstruction of invited campus speakers, the destruction of campus literature, or any other effort to obstruct this exchange shall not be tolerated.

I've used the NorCal-CapArea ping list and my personal ping list this time but I would like to set up a separate ping list for legislative tracking. On or off, you know the drill.

Lacks teeth. Add:

(6) violations of the abovementioned rights of students by instructors, staff, and employees of the University of California, California State University, and the California State Community Colleges may include immediate termination.

Make that "immediate termination without remuneration", or words to that effect to make sure tenured twits don't get fat severance packages at the taxpayers expense.

Fines or jail time would be nice too.

I added the keyword "Academia" as it relates to the liberal bias in Universities.

While I support the concept of the politcally neutral campus, I'm not sure that legislative action is the way to go.

When marxist profs continue to spew their trash, what would be the charge and subsequent punishment? The MSM and associated organs would howl about right wing fascist government.
