"Heart of Dixie" disputed on Alabama license plates (More Liberal Intolerance)

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The state slogan "Heart of Dixie," a source of pride to some and embarrassment to others, is disappearing from more Alabama license plates every year.

One-third of the groups that promote distinctive and collegiate license plates now choose to leave the slogan off their tags.

The standard state license plate still has "Heart of Dixie," but it's reduced to letters one-sixteenth of an inch high and it's placed in the bottom corner of the tag where it's barely visible to passing motorists.

A black friend I have here told me once (he's from NY) that he likes it better here because people are more open with their racism. In NY he said they were still racist but more secretive about it.

As I said to cyborg, most of what people say about the South and Southerners is not true, but stereotypically is believed up North, (Southerners are bigots, racist, mean, inclined to fight in bars, Etc. ) While real Southerners are the first to say the institution of slavery was a mistake and so was segregation. And the southerners in the bars are friendly, like to dance, and like to drink -- all the while saying "yes sir" and "yes ma'am" and being the most cordial people you could want to meet.

Having lived all my life in the South, but having served in the military, I've found that race relations between black and white Southerners are much more friendly than those between their Northern and Left Coast counterparts.

Do we still have a few hardcore racists on both sides? Yep, but they get more and more rare every year. The Klan has been reduced to all but a joke, and David Duke has been relegated to a footnote in Louisiana politics.

Most of this garbage about getting rid of the Stars and Bars and other crap we hear about is led by such tolerant Carpetbaggers as Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and the NAALCP. Their boycott on South Carolina backfired, and in Mississippi, the Confederate flag as part of the state flag was put on the ballot a few years ago. Black and white voters alike overwhelmingly voted to keep the battle flag. It's only an issue with race-baiters who never lived in the South but need something to keep them relevant in their contributor's eyes.

I knew a few, let's say, "eclectic" Mississippians who
migrated to NYC, as well. Pretty much the same type you
described, with the exception of Sela Ward. She definately
didn't go up there to become some rich, old fool's mistress.

"anyhoo....I'm off to deer camp (Port Gibson Miss) with the whole klan ...er...family ... tommorow."

LOL! Substitute a "C" for the "K" word, and it's okay. ;o)
Have a great trip. Ya' goin' huntin'? Does your oldest
son shoot yet?

Man, if this is so, can you imagine how hot the economy of S.C. would be if they dissed the NAACP and the ACLU?

A bit of history is in order here....

"But the South kept slaves, so the word "south" is just code for race hate and must be banned. Those states should therefore be called the Less-Northern states"

Slavery had it origins in New England, and slaves were kept there, as well!

"Likewise, the hateful Mason-Dixon Line will henceforth be called the Mason Line so as not to offend"

Mr. Mason and Mr. Dixon were surveyors who laid down the state line between Pennsylvania & Maryland.

For an accurate history of American slavery may I suggest "Myths of American Slavery" by Walter D. Kennedy, currently in print. It's a real eye opener, to say the least.

"Live Free or Die" is the official state motto of New Hampshire. Besides, it was a concept that was pretty prevalent during the founding of the United States of America (see Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty or give me death" speech). "Heart of Dixie" is not Alabama's official motto, is it? Nor was it one the founding principles.

I could really care less if "Heart of Dixie" is on the license plate. But I don't think you can argue that "Live Free or Die" is a worse thing to say.

It's just 20 years behind on everything.
Depends on which way you view the list.
One of the great things about Alabama is that there are no roadblocks keeping anyone in the state.

AND one may want a quick check to find out just where the LAST vestage of slavery was in this country.

I have lived several places and visited most states. I didn't care too much for New Mexico because there is nothing to do to make a living, so I moved.
I lived in Meritta, GA for a short time. Didn't care much for the people so I moved.
Florida, the people are great but I didn't care for the massive influx of tourist, so I moved.
I spent a great deal of my life in Mississippi. A great place to live, employment sent me to Alabama.
Where I live, people seem to get along just fine. Although I'm sure that there is racism, I don't see much of it but when I do it is generally the hatred of whites displayed by folks of African decent. We just ignore it as well as the other idiots like the diminutive KKK "rallies" that were once held not far from Mobile. I think the last one was about two years ago. Most of the car tags in that area were from out of state, some very far out of state.
The public school system here stinks, I'll agree. Given a choice, I wouldn't send my children into the government school system no matter where I live, and have been fortunate enough to find a very good private school. The thing that I love most about Alabama is that generally we do not like government interference with our day to day lives.
I've traveled to most states. I've had job opportunities in several that I turned down for assorted reasons. One with an engineering firm just outside of Albany, NY. The people of New York state I find to be great. Very friendly, although the culture is a bit different. I declined the offer because of the States firearms laws.
My point is that there are many factors that go into the decision of where to live and raise a family. For most of us here in Alabama, the state has the right mix of things that we hold dear.
You seem (possibly a misunderstanding on my part) miserable in Alabama. I am quite sure that there is a place somewhere in our great Nation that has the right mix for you and your family.

Cordually,
GE

Funny, isn't it? We are told to shut up and quit whining because the war's over and the South lost. But THEY are the ones who keep fighting!

why don't you GO NORTH, aggie???

you (& WE loyal southrons) will be VERY happy then.

fyi, the LOWEST form of life is the SCALAWAG.

in case you've forgotten, a SCALAWAG is a southernborn, who has turned his/her back on the TRUE CAUSE & is now "progressive on the civil war".

come dixie LIBERTY, you won't enjoy living here, so head north NOW.
