Safeway Inc. yesterday said that for the first time, it will open many of its supermarkets on Christmas Day, a move that triggered an angry protest from the union representing the grocer's Washington area employees.
Safeway will become the region's first -- and only -- major supermarket chain to operate stores on Christmas, one of the last holidays observed by U.S. grocers, which now routinely open on Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.

Well, you are in the same area I am.... And I hadn't noticed either that all the stores wnet dark on Christmas. In fact, I've wondered since all the stores went 24-hour a couple years ago, if anyone still knows where the keys are. ;~D

Up into the 1970s the same was true about Sunday...but since then we've turned our back the Sabbath (even while we conservatives make a fuss over the 10 Commandments, while ignoring one of them...). Is it any wonder that not even religious holidays are holy days any more?
One thing that Europe has over us, though they are not church-goers, they do respect the Sabbath, and Christian holy days.
Is she blonde? whats wrong with filling up the tank the day before? carry a spare container of gas in case stupiity catches up with people like that. In case you don't get it, most people DO NOT WANT TO WORK 7 days a week, and they want days off to spend with family etc.
The majority of Americans are also CHRISTIAN, and do not want to be FORCED to work on the sabbith, or any day of significance just so people can buy a six pack.
After you receive the first paycheck, see how much tax was taken out. You might be in for a big suprise and wonder why you bothered!
Okay! Ya got me! Actually, my cat Rocket J. Squirrel is a hardcore pubbie as well, he's a real can-do kind of cat. But my husband owns these two numbskull calicos who are total screamin' socialists--they're always agitating for a redistribution of wealth or carping about how their civil rights are being eroded... it's shameful...
And for those who run out of whipped cream for the pie. It's pretty darned hard to tell when you're running low. It's pffffft, and you're out.
We could require cans of whipped cream to be made out of reinforced see-through muslim plastic, so we could prevent those embarrassing Christmas pfffffts, but it poses the obvious ethical dilemma.
We'd be glad to, if everyone else is getting straight time too.
What if she is trying to take her sick child to the hospital and runs out of gas? "Sorry Mom, but your sick kid is just going to have to suck it up for 24 hours - its Christmas you know." Accidents and illness are no respecters of the calendar.

Duh. Maybe that's why most businesses that ARE open on Christmas Day make it optional and offer triple pay to their employees who DO want to work on the day.

Just in the last few years 301 had become bumper to bumper traffic. I only go there for doctor visits. When I moved to A.A. county, I didn't want to change doctors. The traffic in Annapolis has become a nightmare.
Qwikee Marts and gas stations do a booming business on Christmas Day. People always miscalculate the amount of stuff they need. And if you have no family to spend it with spending the day working rather then sitting at home sobbing into your TV dinner seems like a better option.
My Giant has several "self checkout" stands. Works great,but if you pay by check a employee has to come.
I believe that Randalls is part of the Safeway chain. Some cities in Texas have a Randalls.
My local Safeway (Just off 495 at the B/W Parkway/NASA/ Greenbelt Rd. Exit) stays open 24 hrs. They re-stock while late customers come in and buy after midnight. It's a great time to get the shopping done!
I doubt that most of the cashiers and managers mind staying open on Christmas. Even with a skelton crew. Besides, it'll give the 7-11s some healthy competition.
I've worked on and scheduled around Christmas for years.

It worked great for both of us. I got what was always an easy, slow watch and pretty much worked on correspondence courses or played pinochle for 12 hours on Christmas Day.
