Safeway to Open on Christmas (The unraveling of an American Tradition?)
The Washington Post ^ | 12/11/04 | mek1959

Posted on 12/11/2004 5:45:15 AM PST by mek1959

Safeway Inc. yesterday said that for the first time, it will open many of its supermarkets on Christmas Day, a move that triggered an angry protest from the union representing the grocer's Washington area employees.

Safeway will become the region's first -- and only -- major supermarket chain to operate stores on Christmas, one of the last holidays observed by U.S. grocers, which now routinely open on Thanksgiving and New Year's Day.

I do exactly the same thing. And when we notified our customers as to the reason why we were closing on Sunday's, not one of them complained. To the contrary, many congratulated us for taking this position.

"Turn off your lights. The guys at the power plant would like to have Christmas off, also." They do have the day off. The power plant runs by remote. There are people who work on call in case there is a problem.

You should listen to my kids if you think that is melodramatic.

You are the one who wants to import a muslim idea. """

No, I want the US to stay as it has been and not become more Muslim-like. One of the distinguishing features of this country has been that Christmas has been honored and respected, by stores closing. In contrast, one of the distinguishing features of life in a Muslim country is that Dec. 25 is treated like every other day, the stores are open and retail thrives. You want the Muslim's tradition of ignoring Christmas introduced to the US. I don't - and that's the difference between us.

I never used the word Taliban.

You have used the words "Muslim", "Moslem", and "ACLU". Since all Taliban are Muslim and some ACLU members are also Muslim, YOU OBVIOUSLY BELIEVE THAT ALL MUSLIMS ARE TALIBAN. I'm just trying to use your own logic here - don't hate me for that.

You're comfortable with importing that Moslem tradition to the US. I'm not.

You have no idea what I am "comfortable" with or "uncomfortable" with. So I'll give you one free clue - what I AM extremely uncomfortable with is the concept of attempting to force everybody to observe your own religious holidays. That IS Taliban-esque behavior.

You are deliberately, I believe, misrepresenting my position so that you can attack it.

Nowhere on this thread have I said that we should ignore Christmas. On the contrary, I've said that I celebrate it. And I've said that if it is treated as an ordinary business day, that the cultural significance of Christmas would be threatened.

My position, which has been consistent on this thread, is that having a grocery store open on Christmas Day is no threat to Christmas or Christians.

It is no different than gas stations which are open. Many aren't, but some are, and those that need gasoline on that day are glad because of it.

Yes I do. I've been reading your posts,. You're comfortable with having our culture treat Dec 25 like just another day --- the way they do in Riyadh and Tehran.

How does it "honor" Christmas and Christianity to strand a motorist or force her to camp out on the side of a highway in her car for 24 hours when she runs out of gas on the way to Grandma's house?

Christianity isn't a totalitarian fundamentalist dictatorship. That is a stupid comparison.

Nobody is saying you have to go pray. Just take the day off and spend some time with your kid so he doesn't go smashing the windows out of the neighbors cars, or sticking objects in his face. Buy him a Christmas present, like a fishing rod and take him fishing the next time you get a day off.

Very nice of you!

My husband will probably be working on Christmas this year for that same reason. We don't have kids, or really any family commitments on holidays. But the guys he works with do, and someone has to be there. So he works them. Even though he doesn't get paid any extra anymore

I hope nobody tells the terrorists that our nuclear plants are unmanned on Christmas. Heck, I hope nobody tells the NRC. They'd be mad!

It sounds like you think they have the right to do that...well, so do I. If you check my post, you will not see any words to the contrary. I was speaking to a fellow Washingtonian about the volanic demographic changes that have occurred in our region.

They should have taken a sleigh instead of a car that uses muslim gasoline.

Almost aLL the grocery stores in my area are open on Christmas. I guess for some lonely or non-Christian people that might be a blessing.

Maybe Safeway can offer the union a counterproposal to close on MLK Day instead.
Do you think they'd go for it?

An excellent point.

For that matter, did you ever think that the plastic required to make computer monitors and the cases on computers comes from petroleum products? And where do you think those petroleum products come from?

MUSLIM COUNTRIES!

Anybody who owns a computer obviously supports the Taliban and wants to destroy Christmas.
