...The AG... says he is running for governor because New York is suffering a "crisis" and needs someone to address jobs, taxes and budgetary red ink.... His actions as attorney general have been one of the biggest job-killers in the state.
...The Pacific Research Institute examined state and regulatory regimes with an eye toward whether they attracted business investment or drove it away. New York was ranked dead last, right after California.
In a study of the 200 largest metropolitan areas in terms of job-creation, New York ranked 169th.
Matters were not improved this week when a gaggle of union-addled politicians in Albany voted to raise the minimum wage statewide, overriding a veto by Gov. Pataki....
The law will raise the minimum wage over two years by a whopping two bucks, to $7.15 from $5.15. New York would instantly find itself at distinct disadvantage to, say, New Jersey, whose minimum wage is $5.15....
Cornell... showed that young black workers and high-school dropouts were four times more likely to be out of a job after a minimum-wage increase than were other groups....
Mr. Spitzer offers himself as the solution for the self-defeating practices that have kept New York state an economic laggard. Sure, tell us another one....
No wonder... New York [has] reputation for business unfriendliness... overtaxed, over-regulated small businesses that can't negotiate for special tax deals the way big firms routinely do.
Democrats have been on the warpath over how to stop outsourcing, so here's an idea: Stop making U.S. workers more expensive by fiat....
History and logic have taught that mandating higher wages is not a formula for growth. Creating a business-friendly environment with reasonable taxes and regulatory costs usually works better. We'll see how many companies rush to invest in New York if Mr. Spitzer becomes governor.

This guy won't be elected governor, he's too mean and humorless.
I think I will get flamed for this but I dont think a minimum wage increase will have a much of an effect.
thing like taxes and energy costs, etc.. are much bigger job killers.
New York takes so much of your paycheck for taxes, they need to implement a system where your whole check goes directly to them and then they give you a small stipend to live on.
Oh wait..that's the goal!
Don't worry. If it weren't that regulation, Spitzer would have easily found another. New York is full of them, and once he spots deep pockets, he'll use every one of them to get down to the bottom.
If you are a business and he gets you in his sights, start pulling out your checkbook. He could give inventive pointers to the NY Mafia "protection" rackets. The only difference is, his shakedowns are legal!
Ha!
I wouldn't bet the farm on that reasoning!
Remember, this is the very State that elects the likes of Chuck Schumer, Hillary Clinton and Mario Cuomo - time after time.
Spitzer will get the nomination. Spitzer will win. Take that to the bank. Better yet, place your early bet with your favorite bookie in Vegas while the odds are still good and make yourself a cool pile of cash in 2006. It's a sure winner!
He will beat any Republican except Rudy. Hate to say it, but it's true. Unfortunately, Rudy doesn't seem to want the job.
I think Rudy wants out of politics, now that he has discovered how much he can earn by owning his own firm on Wall Street.
Remember, people are supposed to eventually get the government that they deserve. Maybe this is what's going to happen to NY for electing Hillary!
You are right. New York has the government it deserves! It is not pretty.
I agree Rudy is the only one who can beat Spitzer, but he probably won't run. Why run for Governor when you can run for President just as easily?
Unfortunately, I think Rudy wants to run for President. Which I think is fruitless and a waste of his political capital.
I'd vote for him if he made it through the primaries, but while I'm more then willing to be pragmatic most of the time, I'd have trouble supporting him initially given his VERY left views on Abortion. For an office like Governor or Senator, sure, but for President? That would be really hard for me. I'm not sure what I'd do.
correct. only Rudy can beat Spitzer. Like it or not, Spitzer is seen as a reformer taking on corrupt industries.
Yah, I sure hope we can talk Rudy into running for Senate or Governor in '06. He'd get either office easily IMHO. He's got so much political captial he could get in the day filing closes and still win.
Face it. Spitzer went into his job with one focus, the governorship. And anyone with a brain knows he will shoot for the presidency. Meanwhile, he has run roughshod over long standing business practices, some good, some bad. At the end of the day I believe his vigorous prosecutorial approach has done more harm than good. He is nothing more than a political animal of the worst kind. He will destroy America in order to lead it.
but if he runs for Senate, Hillary will not run. she cannot afford to lose the senate race, then her political hopes for the presidency are over.
with Spitzer running for Gov, that tells me he knows Rudy will not. If Pataki were smart, he would run against Hillary - she is the weakest statewide Democrat, he might be able to beat her.
I don't think Pataki has a chance against Hillary.
I agree that Hillary won't run again if Rudy does. She'll mutter something about how she needs to run for President to protect the world from the 'right wing crazies' or something, and how she needs to campaign full time and NY needs a 'Full time Senator' or something.
That said, wouldn't it be neat if we could get Rudy to sucker punch her, i.e. wait and wait and wait, till she's already filed, do nothing, and then get in at the last second. Since he's such a superstar, getting a late start wouldn't even really hurt him. He'd get as much money and media and ground game as he would need overnight.
But that's just fantasy. I just hope he runs for SOMETHING in '06 and doesn't run for President in '08.
if that ever happened, she would use a fake health crisis for Bill to pull out of the race at the last minute. and then miraculously emerge a couple of months later and say "he's fine now", and start the presidential run.
I think that may be a bit too transparent to save her. But she might try it.
Honestly, I'm not 100% sure she'll win the primaries for President any which way. A lot of Dems that arn't nuts are realizing that she would have an EXTREMELY difficult time winning.
The scary thing for the Dems is, that they do not have a SINGLE GOOD CANDIDATE that is high-profile right now. All their high profile leaders would probably lose the election.
The only exception I can think of is Evan Bayh, and I'm not sure I'd call him high profile. Barring one of our super-high profile people getting the nomination (i.e. Rudy) I think he'd be heavily favored to win.
Fred Dicker on Capital Gang now - echoing the point that Spitzer is a shoe-in for governor. And Spitzer thinks he can be the first jewish president.
Hahaha! Yah right!
He'll win Governor easy enough, (again, assuming Rudy doesn't want the job) but NO WAY will he ever win President.
