RUMSFELD SET UP; REPORTER PLANTED QUESTIONS WITH SOLIDER
Thu Dec 09 2004 11:49:38 ET

Chattanooga Times Free Press reporter Edward Lee Pitts is embedded with the 278th Regimental Combat Team, now in Kuwait preparing to enter Iraq, and is filing articles for his newspaper. Pitts claims in a purported email that he coached soldiers to ask Defense Secretary Rumsfeld questions!

Subject: RE: Way to go

I just had one of my best days as a journalist today. As luck would have it, our journey North was delayed just long enough see I could attend a visit today here by Defense Secretary Rumsfeld. I was told yesterday that only soldiers could ask questions so I brought two of them along with me as my escorts. Before hand we worked on questions to ask Rumsfeld about the appalling lack of armor their vehicles going into combat have. While waiting for the VIP, I went and found the Sgt. in charge of the microphone for the question and answer session and made sure he knew to get my guys out of the crowd.

So during the Q&A session, one of my guys was the second person called on. When he asked Rumsfeld why after two years here soldiers are still having to dig through trash bins to find rusted scrap metal and cracked ballistic windows for their Humvees, the place erupted in cheers so loud that Rumsfeld had to ask the guy to repeat his question. Then Rumsfeld answered something about it being "not a lack of desire or money but a logistics/physics problem." He said he recently saw about 8 of the special up-armored Humvees guarding Washington, DC, and he promised that they would no longer be used for that and that he would send them over here. Then he asked a three star general standing behind him, the commander of all ground forces here, to also answer the question. The general said it was a problem he is working on.

The great part was that after the event was over the throng of national media following Rumsfeld- The New York Times, AP, all the major networks -- swarmed to the two soldiers I brought from the unit I am embedded with. Out of the 1,000 or so troops at the event there were only a handful of guys from my unit b/c the rest were too busy prepping for our trip north. The national media asked if they were the guys with the armor problem and then stuck cameras in their faces. The NY Times reporter asked me to email him the stories I had already done on it, but I said he could search for them himself on the Internet and he better not steal any of my lines. I have been trying to get this story out for weeks- as soon as I foud out I would be on an unarmored truck- and my paper published two stories on it. But it felt good to hand it off to the national press. I believe lives are at stake with so many soldiers going across the border riding with scrap metal as protection. It may be to late for the unit I am with, but hopefully not for those who come after.

The press officer in charge of my regiment, the 278th, came up to me afterwords and asked if my story would be positive. I replied that I would write the truth. Then I pointed at the horde of national media pointing cameras and mics at the 278th guys and said he had bigger problems on his hands than the Chattanooga Times Free Press. This is what this job is all about - people need to know. The solider who asked the question said he felt good b/c he took his complaints to the top. When he got back to his unit most of the guys patted him on the back but a few of the officers were upset b/c they thought it would make them look bad. From what I understand this is all over the news back home.

Thanks,

Lee

while it is a serious issue...THAT IS...AND HAS BEEN...in the staged of being addressed.....it is wrong for the reporter to take advantage of the soldier like that.

Yes, the soldiers cheered...but they cheered at dang near every question and statement made. THEY ARE SERIOUS ON THE ISSUE...but they also know that it is being addressed...and it seems that Rumsfeld addressing the question...has already provided a morale boost.

Production of the armor sets have been greatly increased.
facilities that produce the armor...are running 2 12 hour shifts a day. That's 24 hours a day.

The units produced a day have gone from around 15 to over 400. (And the process to cut the special steel...is complicated by that fact that the steel cannot be heated...which means that it can't be cut in most normal fashions...due to friction...even with water jets. IF the steel heats up...it becomes weaker when it cools. --

SO IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO CUT THE RIGHT PRODUCT!)

I have gotten 3 e-mails today from troopers in Iraq...and they liked Rumsfeld's response....they say it shows he is working on it.

AND YES...they have now heard...that the reporter wrote the question.

AND THAT ANGERED THEM (soldiers are very internet savy these days.)...because it takes away from the issue at hand. That being the need for armor....a need that they say is being addressed.

Every e-mail on the issue, that I get from troopers I know, state that the issue is being addressed...and that the media is overblowing it. (They get e-mail from their parents...due to the overblown reports....and they are upset that they have to spend every communication time with their family..to calm them down...instead of getting to catch up!).

30,000 wheeled vehicles...and now over 20,000 of them have the Armor needed. That's a good effort.

Don't get me wrong...more should be pushed for....but the media is not giving the whole story on this.

I trust my troopers on the ground...and will go with what they say.

"Nothing to prove...the soldier didn't say anything the enemy couldn't find out on the internet."

YOU did. I didn't demand you prove HIS question, I demanded you prove YOUR statment #762:

"More men will die because they are not equipped with what they need to engage in this war, not because of a question asked by a soldier."

Which, as I said, is a nice soundbyte. Is it yours or are you in the loop?

"Bottom line is there is a problem and it isn't being fixed."

I disagree. It IS being fixed. It's being done as fast as can be done with what's left of the infrastructure to provide such protection to my fellow soldiers. After 8 years of Clinton we were left with ONE ammunition plant to provide bullets for our M-16 and other machine guns. And not jsut bullets for combat...they provide them for the new recruits and for the training of units about to deploy.

There were two years where there was nothing spent on procurement.

In a nutshell when W took office in 2001 the Military Cupboard was literally bare.

We've needed extra protection for our HUMMVEE's since I was in Somalia. We were susecptable to these kids of attacks way back then.

IMHO...the short turn around on the fix for our HUMMVEE's has been remarkable. The speed with which it's gotten to the units is just as impressive. Are there still some units that need armor? Yes. Will they get it as fast as humanly possible? Yes.

Instead of blaming the gov't for this problem...maybe some Senator or Congree Critter in a rustbelt state with shuttered factories need to propose a way to open those factories back up to make more armored Hummers than the 400 a month that are able to be turned out at the one plant doing it today.

It would kill two birds with one stone. More armored HUMMVEE's would get to the troops faster and unemployed workers would have jobs again.

Agreed.

The Military was ignored, as far as requested updates go, during the Clinton years.

And their are burocraps in the Pentagon.....and as a person who comes from a huge military family...I can tell you that many of them are butt kissers who are working to get stars on their shoulders. So they will stop any word for getting to the top...if it hurts their standing.

I guarantee you that those butt kissers are in a state of panic. Because, even though the reporter was playing games, the issue or worries of soldiers has reached Rumsfeld's attention.

And that means that the burocraps at the top of the Army leadership...will catch h#ll.

There are way too many burocrap flag officers in the Army...(Think Wesley Clark). Year by year...they are being weeded out.....but it is always an ongoing problem.

It was obvious to anybody with eyes that the Humvee had been exposed in Mogadishu. Nothing was done about it. The Clinton appointee who ran the Pentagon did nothing to address it. The military was starved in the 90s. Nobody has addressed the cost of this neglect. There were no spare parts, barely any ammo. Under those circumstances, nothing was going to be done to fix the Humvees. it is a scandal that any Humvees after 93 left the factory without being uparmored.

As I see it, Clitoon, the media that never questioned Clinton's steep military cuts, the Pentagon, Bush and the Congress all have blame in this.

The strain on the Guard and Reserves is a direct result of Clinton's slashing of the Army's end strength. Nobody in media has brought it up. House Republicans should relentlessly hammer it home. GOP bloggers and talk radio should talk about it constantly. The Right doesn't no how to
fight back. The MSM and the Rats in DC hammer and hammer away, when does anybody on our side change the terms of the debate. Clintoon's military cuts should make the Left shut up for awhile. They can't bitch about the over-stretched army, if the American public is told that Clintoon and the Left cut the army to the bone.

Why do they always get a free lunch? Yes, we one the election (barely-- had we educated the electorate, we would have won by 20 points), but the debates are still being fought. We need to engage, we need to fight back, we need to expose the Left and we need to win. Having said that, Bush should turn Heaven and Earth to fix the problems he inherited.

He cut so many Army divisons. He underfunded. He launched nutty social experiments. They starved the military. He needs to be accountable for that.

But Bush isn't blameless, I don't think Rummy is the genius I once did. We need a bigger military.

I just can't take the Ratmedia giving aid and comfort to the enemy. I really think some of them would actually give coordinates to the terrorist.

Yeah the two "escorts" this guy Pitts manipulated into taking him to the meeting should have been with the rest of their unit preparing and doing their final checks and preparations for their move into Iraq

Why? Could the rest of their unit be here .

Attacking me does not make your argument stronger! The question was staged and the cheering was muted at best. Rumsfield answered it directly and was not stumpped by the phony "reporter." Your better than to attack everyone who disagrees with you. If you want groupthink go to another board.

I'm no expert on the Hummvee, but you are right on about under or ill equipped.

A good example:

In WWII, the USN used ships in regular combat action that shouldn't have been near a ship-on-ship gun battle (the ships were the ATLANTA-class Light Cruisers [Anti-Aircraft]) The ATLANTA's were designed for AA defence, NOT for a running surface gun battle. The ships were fast (40 knots) but horribly thin-skinned and easily damaged when hit

One of them, USS JUNEAU, was battered in the first Guadalcanal battle (torpedo hit which snapped the keel)

On the way out of the area, JUNEAU was torpedoed again--this time the ship was literally blown to pieces. 700 died.

Some asked "why was she there?". The Navy's answer was very simple: The ships in the battle were all they had.

Rumsfeld's Visit

As you know, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld came here for a visit yesterday. The news agencies (all of them- even Fox) have already spun the visit way out of control.

I just watched a "Fox Live" update (it's 1:36 am EDT as I type this- 9:36 am Kuwait time), and the anchor started with "what was supposed to be a friendly question and answer session turned into a tough grilling for Donald Rumsfeld..." -this is not a true statement.

I saw another report that indicated that the SECDEF "was slated to give a pep talk" but that it "devolved into a gripe session." -not true.

I've been sitting through briefings about this visit for the past 6 days- in every case, this visit was billed as a "town hall meeting" in which the SECDEF would open the floor to questions and answer them to the best of his ability- never saw anything that suggested it was supposed to be "friendly" or "peppy." This is nothing new- it's actually something that SECDEF's have been doing for years. When I was a VIP Flight Platoon Leader in Seoul, I picked up Secretary of Defense William Cohen at Osan Airbase, flew him to Seoul Airbase, and watched in stunned disbelief as one of my soldiers asked him why the Clinton Administration thought it was a good idea to keep downsizing the military when deployments like Somalia and the Balkans were "on the up and up." More about that later.

The only thing unusual about this particular "town hall meeting" was the fact that the press was invited. My coworkers and I wondered aloud about the wisdom of this decision, and I still can't really see the logic there. The only thing I can think of is that the SECDEF intended to show that he has nothing to hide- sort of like a "full public disclosure" kind of thing. The problem with this is obvious. When the cameras are rolling and a soldier stands up and asks why the military isn't doing anything to properly equip him for war, guess what happens? That's right- the media machine immediately establishes a new "truth"- in this case it's that the military is not equipping the force. Absolutely no effort is made to fact-check the soldier- his word is taken as pure gospel. Politicians on Capitol Hill start ranting and raving, the pundits weigh in, and the opposition party gleefully waves the "I told you so" banner. All because of one question from a hard-working well-meaning lower enlisted soldier.

SPC Wilson is one of those soldiers who likes to take shots at authority figures. His ex-wife said of him- "It wouldn't matter if it was Bush himself standing there. He would have dissed him the same." This does not mean he's a bad soldier. It does mean that he's probably not a good choice to be an Army spokesperson, which is exactly what he became yesterday. As I mentioned earlier, I had a soldier like him working for me in Korea- the guy who unloaded on SECDEF Cohen for downsizing. I thought it was a fair question- I just wish he would have run his question by me before asking my boss's boss's boss's boss. We had a talk about it- my policy was not unusual, and he was well aware of it- if you have a gripe, ask me about it. If you don't like my answer, then go to the next level. If you feel uncomfortable talking to me, then fine- talk to my boss. Of course he didn't feel uncomfortable talking to me (I'm a pretty nice guy), he just said, "Sorry, Sir- I really don't like the Clintonians. I had an opportunity shot and I took it."

I'm not saying that SPC Wilson has an anti-Bush agenda or anything like that- I think he was probably frustrated about things he either didn't understand or didn't agree with, and just wanted to take a shot. And I can tell you that his platoon leader and everyone else in his chain of command felt betrayed if he didn't voice his complaint to them first- from my experience, I'm guessing he did not.

I have no doubt that one of SPC Wilson's superiors told him to go through a scrap yard to get more vehicle armor. There's nothing wrong with this- resourceful soldiers are always looking to improve on their equipment, weapons, fighting positions, etc. What SPC Wilson might not be aware of (at his level)- is that all vehicles that drive north into Iraq are required to have "level 3" armor protection. If a vehicle does not meet this standard, it will not be driven up north- it will be carried on a flatbed truck. Once in Iraq, armored vehicles are used for driving off post, and unarmored vehicles are used for driving around on post. This policy is put out to each unit's commanders well before the unit even arrives to Kuwait. The leaders are then charged with disseminating this information down to the soldiers. Obviously, this process of "information dissemination" doesn't always happen like it's supposed to- and so we have uninformed soldiers (who think they're going to drive into Iraq in unarmored vehicles) taking shots at our nation's most powerful leaders. It happens all the time, and it's another reason why America is such a unique country. There are many places in this world where a soldier would not survive asking such a question.

I wasn't at the event yesterday, but our friend SGT Missick was there. He presents a more accurate picture of how the soldiers received the SECDEF- very much in contrast with the "Spanish Inquisition" that you saw from the MSM:

I must say that the mood in the hangar was much more of goodwill, with soldiers packing around the Secretary as if he was a movie star to shake his hand or get a picture at the end. There was a great deal of frustration in the voice of the soldier who asked questions regarding vehicles being up-armored, and the hangar did erupt in applause after he spoke, but I wouldn’t translate one very tough question into a grill session by American forces.

My $0.02.

1) We don't have enough vehicle armor!

I logged well over 1,500 miles driving around Iraq, and I never even saw an "armored" humvee. I didn't complain- mostly because I was well aware that my father never had any armored humvees in Vietnam, and my grandfather certainly didn't have any armored humvees during WWII.

As soon as the ground commanders asked for armored humvees, the military industrial complex went into overdrive- read more about it here:

Furthermore, Di Rita said, since the Army first identified a need for more armored Humvees, in the fall of 2003, the service “has done just a superb job of turning around a component of industrial base that was doing different things” and turning the manufacturers to making both armored Humvees and armor kits for other vehicles.

At the time, Humvee makers were “producing something on order of 15 armored Humvees per month,” Di Rita said.

Today, that number is 450, he said, with $1.2 billion spent since August 2003 on armor and armored Humvees alone. As a result, “three out of four” Humvees now in Iraq are armored, he said.

2) Stop the stop-loss!

"Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." -JFK

3) Active Duty units get "preferential treatment" over Reserve and NG units!

Absolutely 100% false. The priority of money and equipment goes to the units with "tactical priority." If we had a National Guard unit "fighting it out" in the streets of Baghdad, they would have tactical priority (would get priority of equipment and funding) over an Active Duty unit that's guarding camels in Basra. As it happens, Active Duty units usually (but not always) have tactical priority by virtue of their mission and/or location.

When I was in Mosul with the 101st, we were always last in line with respect to funding and equipment. 4th ID (in Tikrit) and 1st AD (in Baghdad) had tactical priority, so they received "preferential treatment." They were fully engaged in the Sunni Triangle- we understood this, so we didn't complain.

As I said earlier, soldiers at the lowest levels do not always understand the concept of "tactical priority"- it's more of an officer thing. Having said that, we officers (and you NCOs out there)obviously need to do a better job of educating our young soldiers about their chosen profession. Secretary Rumsfeld, I'm quite certain, would appreciate it...

UPDATE:

I think Rumsfeld handled the whole thing perfectly. I especially liked this quote:

"I don't know what the facts are, but somebody is certainly going to sit down with him and find out what he knows that they may not know," Rumsfeld said.

True. And his commander will probably ask him why he used a world stage and a session with the SECDEF as a means to pass this "information" up the chain (he might be standing at attention for that part of the discussion). Who knows? The soldier might have a viable excuse for speaking out in such a forum. I seriously doubt it, but he might. In any case, he won't be punished. He'll probably feel pretty bad when he realizes what he did, though...

UPDATE AGAIN:

Froggy agrees with me- and shares an experience of his own! You must read it...

I am not going to criticize this National Guardsmen for having a legitimate complaint about the equipment he must use to fight in Iraq, but taking it up with the SECDEF on TV is unsat. Does he really think that Rumsfeld wouldn't rather have 2 armored hummers for every soldier? Like he said, it's a matter of physics rather than a matter of desire. There is a time and place to make these kind of inquiries, but this was neither.

No from everything I heard on this topic today on the radio indicated the bulk of the 278th was at their base camp away from this meeting preparing for their move North. Mr. Pitts...upset over the fact Rummy wasn't taking questions from the media on his visit...specifically pulled two soldiers away from thrir duty to "escort" him to the meeting.

Very doubtful from everything I hear today that more than a handful of other 278th Soldiers were there.

we are getting that bigger military.

A look at the retention and recruiting numbers shows that the number, even though not reported as such, seems to be climbing.

Look, I am not saying that more can't be done...more can always be done.

But the issues are being addressed.

And at the same time...I am not saying that some of the soldiers griping...is not just a part of the environment.

Soldiers gripe.....sometimes to just past the time and blow off steam....I got no problem with that. And while some gripes are legit....there are usually more gripes than problems....and that gives the media the target they want to hurt the war effort.

My mom, when an Army wife years ago, once told a report what he could do with himself when he approached her in a food market near the base. He was trying to get her to say something that she did not feel, think, nor believe.

Reporters try to take advantage of family members who have loved ones deployed. That always do that. Play on the emotions of a woman who is stressed and sad and worried.

The reporter tried that with my mom....and got a result he did not want.

That's what the loser gets for trying to mess with my mom.
