NEW YORK A decision by Wells College (search), which has been all-women since 1868, to begin admitting male students in order to boost enrollment has riled female students.
Many students are threatening to leave the upstate New York college, but two have moved beyond threats and filed a lawsuit that says the decision to enroll men constitutes a breach of contract and fraud.

What is sad about this is that it was the school's need for money that is causing the change and not a sense of social fairness. They certainly do not need my money.

I get a kick out of this hypocricy. What about the hypocrisy of those who defend single sex male colleges, but won't do the same for single sex female colleges?
To: golch1979
Equal protection for me but not for you is the mantra. We've got this chain of excercise places out here called "Curves", and in the fine print underneath, it says, "for women". I always wondered what they'd do if a guy wanted to join. There are no showers, no disrobing, only the argument that, "Women wouldn't want to sweat to the oldies if men were watching." That argument didn't hold any water when racist store owners wanted to keep black people out of their establishments, would it be any more valid today?

There are some good-looking liberal girls around here, as there are some good-looking conservatives as well.

"student Starbuck Hersey."
Joke name I hope. Couldn't have been named after the coffee place, but possibly Starbuck on Battlestar Galactica?

Apples and oranges. That is not the argument here. I'm not making the point that there are not valid reasons for all-male and all-female schools. I'm just pointing out that these girls at these schools are, in all probability, liberal. Logic tells me where they are on social issues today. When the boomerang is coming back at them, they react this way. Hypocrisy is beautiful, because it proves a lack of merit in someone else, it doesn't do anything to you.

See comment 29. I'm not saying there isn't value in same-sex schools. But this is just cartoonish.

They enrolled at Wells College under the assumption they would receive an education in a single-sex environment. It is a shame that it might not come to pass. They are right to sue.

I never understood why a girl would want to break into an all male college. Sounds like a house of horrors to me (knowing men the way I do).
Although a single man infiltrating an all girl college...this one I understand!

So you agree that they should fight to keep the school all-female. You agree that they're not doing anything wrong.
You simply disagree with views which they may or may not have held in regards to VMI.

It is a shame that it might not come to pass. They are right to sue. I don't know what damages they could show, especially if the college only allows freshmen males the first year, and then sophomores the next year and so on. The girls in the school already will probably have few or no male classmates, since those would have to be transfers, or they'd have to take a class with underclassmen.

Again you miss the point. If you read the article you'd see that any body already admitted would graduate before they let in boys. Also I'm not talking about their political affiliation just for the heck of it. Give you one guess what they would think of an all-male school doing this? Well, maybe they've changed their mind now. Ever heard "do as I say, not as I do." Ever heard that "this is OK because we can't be racist."

It does sound like breach of at least implied contract...for the aggrieved women not to file suit would be a waiver and acceptance of the breach/revised contract. Sounds like the policy of the college changed for financial gain and now they've infuriated their main market to bring in a few more bucks. Bad strategic move. Betcha an adminstrative head or two rolls over this and the "new policy" is repealed. That's what SHOULD happen anyway.
