WSJ: Uncivil Senator (Harry Reid, Democrat)
Wall Street Journal ^ | December 7, 2004 | Editorial

Posted on 12/07/2004 5:55:17 AM PST by OESY

Tom Daschle may be gone, but his method isn't forgotten. At least not by his successor as Senate Minority Leader, Harry Reid, who got his tenure off to a rousing start on Sunday by calling Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas an "embarrassment," who writes "poorly" besides.

We doubt this was a slip of the tongue. By attacking Mr. Thomas personally and suggesting he's not too bright, Mr. Reid was signaling to President Bush that if he promotes Mr. Thomas to Chief Justice the fight will be mean and bloody and not limited to Constitutional issues. Democrats will try to destroy the Justice personally, much as they did the first time around. At least we know who has cast the first stone in the coming judicial confirmation battles.

As it happens, this insult comes just when Justice Thomas has been enjoying better publicity for his work both on and off the High Court. The Washington Post published a series earlier this year that was remarkably flattering toward his contribution, and noting that he is very much his own man on the bench. A new book by Atlanta reporter Ken Foskett, "Judging Thomas," also attempts an objective appraisal and concludes he is making a mark on the Court. As a final point, imagine the reaction if, say, Trent Lott had ever dared to suggest that the late African-American Justice Thurgood Marshall wasn't really up to the work?

Note to Harry: Thomas has a job for life. You don't. (see Tom Daschle for details.)

Looks like he is following the Tom Dasshole model...

Speak softly and act like a big d***.

What a set of j*ck*ss comments those are. 'Uncivil Senator' is right. And exactly what are Reid's qualifications for judging the quality of Judge Thomas's opinions?

He's not just uncivil. If he really believes that Thomas writes poorly, then Reid is just plain dumb, because in truth, Thomas' writing is excellent. More likely, Reid is a racist, or perhaps simply an extreme partisan, who is willing to say anything in order to manipulate the political process.

The last thing the Dems want is for Bush to be the first President to appoint a black to the position of Chief Justice. They would much rather had a white male, even if he's the most conservative justice in history.

Thomas would make a great Chief Justice, and he gets my vote.

I watched Reid's "performance" on MTP on Sunday. My sense was that he is a gift to Republicans. He is rude, abrasive and just not very smart. Oh, he's arrogant also. Just a great combination of personality traits for us.

This Democrat just hurled a racist insult at Judge Clarence Thomas and everyone just accepts it? To suggest this judge is "not too bright" is such a condescending and b**chy remark for Reid to make. When will the black Democrats get off their collective butts and celebrate success of minorty people. I am perplexed how the Democrats get away with these attacks. Reid ought to be ashamed of himself and offer an apology ASAP.

When I watch C-Span, I find that Senator Reid is one of the especially annoying Senators.

He speaks so softly...yet he speaks so nastily.

Charles Dickens probably had men like Senator Reid in mind when he developed his villains.

I would be equally happy with Scalia or Thomas as Chief Justice.

But there's not the slightest doubt that Reid opposes Thomas being elevated because he's black.

The reason may be precisely because Democrats don't want to see conservative blacks in important positions, but make no mistake about it; it's about the color of Thomas's skin.

I don't think Soiled Harry is going to last very long in the Senate. He strikes me as the kind of 'Rat that campaigns at home as a conservative Democrat (just like Puff Dasshole) but now that he has national exposure of what he does in Washington, his days are numbered.

Thanks Harry. Because David Souter, John Paul Stevens, Ruth Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer are all BRILLIANT legal minds. Of course, none of them are as smart as Hillary, who can turn $1,000 into $100,000 in a heartbeat.

Were I President, this might be enough to decide me... to appoint Thomas.

We could be looking at a 65-seat majroty by 2008!

During oral argument, Antonin Scalia is noted for his sarcastic, witty, intellectually demanding and occasionally biting comments and questions. He loves the cut and thrust of debate. Clarence Thomas will never achieve his intellectual goal.

I PREFER SCALIA!

I see a new Daschle like figurehead for the Dims in Harry Reid who can be Daschled in the future. It should be fun. I always love crushing their leaders in an election cycle. "Dirty Harry" has a whole new meaning for me from now on.
