Now, whereas I don't trust anything the NYT publishes, it is possible to support President Bush and the war and still believe that the situation is deteriorating. The reports I see and hear (some from soldiers who have returned) indicate that it is deteriorating in some areas. The insurgents have gotten over the shock of being "insurgents" and are learning how to function in the present Iraqi society. They have learned how to be better at ambushing, smuggling, organizing, etc. Now this could either be from months of practice or the fact that it is a Darwinian society where the worst ones are being caught and the only ones left are the ones that were gifted in that area to begin with. In either case, we're fighting a smaller quantity of insurgents than when we began, but a higher quality bunch.

I do believe that the war is being won and that we, and in turn the vast majority of Iraqi people, will prevail. However, we must resist the pressure to start withdrawing troops and the pressure to put diplomacy above military strength. We know what happens when that philosophy is tried. Now is the time to recommit ourselves and double the efforts. I believe success will come from being more hawkish, much the way the last campaign in Falujah was enacted.

As Dennis Miller says though, "Of course that's just my opinion. I could be wrong."

Danny was in the room standing right next to the telegraph operator when the message came through.

The NYT must've intercepted a cable that was sent during WWII and it's just getting to where it is supposed to be.

"How does a 'Cable' "leak", and how often does it happen? "

Sounds like a job for the White House Plumbers.*

We all agree those two concepts are compatible, especially since President Bush warned the situaton would in fact get worse as the terrorists desperately try to cancel the upcoming elections.

HOWEVER, I can assure you the intent of this "leak" is to do what we all can see is the purpose: To make it appear that the war is being lost and to help promote the idea that the elections might not happen.

We really need the Iraqi's to take over. They will not be constrained by all of the rules and regulations our military is constrained by. I think Iraqis like Allawi know that they have to fight terror with terror.

When the terrorists start finding some of their own mysteriously disappearing and showing up laying in the street with their heads cut off, as payback for what they've been doing to in Mosul, some may decide to get out of the terrorist business.

These must be Clinton operatives (only God knows how many traitors are still there) inside the CIA who are desperately trying to hurt America before they are fired by new management.

The CIA needs to spy on its own traitors and prosecute them for disclosing classified communications.

anyone who can't see that the situation is obviously deteriorating must have a leaking brain that shorted out when it hit the cable on the floor

I guess the first time they tried reporting this nobody listened. They will recycle this story for months. It won't work

What I can do for now, is this:

My kids and I are headed for mobilization stateside next month. After a few months of train-up, we hit The Sandbox starting in June or so.

After 12 months, we're back for de-mobilization, then home. Pretty much the standard rotation, nowadays.

You are 'seeing' what the MSM/DIMs/Liberals want you to see. No good news is being reported out of Iraq, deliberately. Success is not measured by the number of negative news reports. Remember when Afghanistan was a 'quagmire' and a disaster? Remember when the initial assault into Iraq in the spring of 2003 was 'bogged' down and a disaster?

"My guess is someone is reporting the upsurge in violence and that it may not get better until at least after the election."

As an ODS Vet (and still p*ssed that we didn't smote Sadam Hussein down the FIRST time...thank you SO much, UN!) I have watched this play out on basically an hourly basis since the opening "Shock & Awe." Yes, I've neglected husband, children, home, work, pets; but this is HISTORY in the making, d@mmit! LOL!

I don't think there's been a week that's gone by without someone saying we're at the end of our rope. All is lost. The sky is falling. What's that Lassie? Timmy fell down the well?!?

I don't put much faith in these reports. Drudge or not. And if the NYT is involved...Ig-Frigin-Nor it!

Trust me. I have YEARS invested in this already. Save yourselves! Don't waste you life as I have! :)

Berlin, January 19, 1917

On the first of February we intend to begin submarine warfare unrestricted. In spite of this, it is our intention to endeavor to keep neutral the United States of America.

If this attempt is not successful, we propose an alliance on the following basis with Mexico: That we shall make war together and together make peace. We shall give general financial support, and it is understood that Mexico is to reconquer the lost territory in New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona. The details are left to you for settlement....

You are instructed to inform the President of Mexico of the above in the greatest confidence as soon as it is certain that there will be an outbreak of war with the United States and suggest that the President of Mexico, on his own initiative, should communicate with Japan suggesting adherence at once to this plan; at the same time, offer to mediate between Germany and Japan.

Please call to the attention of the President of Mexico that the employment of ruthless submarine warfare now promises to compel England to make peace in a few months.

"Hey New York Times. We are past the days of using Western Union for communications. You know about that fancy limo with untold millions in sophisticated military electronics gear that the president rides around in? It does not contain a little old man with a telegraph key."

Actually they still do use "Cables"...so the old guy in the back of the Limo is probably using a keyboard to send the Prez's Cable.
